Update Ladies Day: ein Kleid für den schönsten Vintage-Hut

Ich freue mich schon so – wie letzte Woche angekündigt findet am Samstag, den 11.Juni 2016, auf der Krefelder Rennbahn im Rahmen der Ladies Day statt. Der Ladies Day ist inspiriert von den englischen Pferderennen und somit eine großartige Gelegenheit, ein schickes Outfit in Kombination mit einem Hut oder Hütchen auszuführen.
I am so excited – like I announced last week on Saturday, June 11th, 2016 is Ladies Day at the racecourse in Krefeld. Like the well known Ladies Days in the UK it is a great opportunity to dress up a little and wear a hat or fascinator.

Einen Hutwettbewerb gibt es auch wieder – dieses Mal mit einem Sonderpreis für den schönsten Vintage-Hut (egal ob original oder repro). Ich habe überlegt was mir noch zum Thema Pferderennen einfällt – und mal eine Varitation mit einem meiner Bleistiftkleider ausprobiert.
I had a go at another outfit for the horse races for me – with a pencil or wiggle dress. This would be a very nice outfit – however I picked another one.

Mit den Federn war mir das einfach zuviel – also Schnipp-Schnapp Federn ab! Der Fascinator ist von Bijou Brigitte und hat weniger als 20 Euro gekostet.
There was too much going on with the feathers – so I just cut them off! The fascinator is by Bijou Brigitte and cost less than 20 Euros.

Business with a Twist – Break the Rules!

Sorry. Ladies – today it’s English only.

First I am a firm believer that before you go and break some rules, you’d better know them in the first place. The last council session was long and felt long. But no more about that today. I can’t believe its already a month ago that I went to Paris for the day and that I actually bought a dress from the Beth Ditto collection. Not the one I thought I’d get but the black one.

My shoes are watching you! I love these shoes.

The rouching in the back is still quite noticable, even on the black one.

I was afraid the lipstick print wouldn’t get enough mileage and I actually needed another LBD (Little Black Dress). It is fun though and sooo me. My heart is still a little sad, that I didn’t buy it.

So far I have worn it twice to offical gatherings: the mayor’s may reception for the unions and various social organizations and the following week for the council meeting. My shoes (the dotty cat ones) got more attention than the dress. Though that doesn’t mean people didn’t talk about it, they just didn’t say anything to me. Probably not a good thing. But I feel great when I wear it. I love the pockets.

Combined with my trusty tweed jacket from Boden and a big scarf – I look like it is considered proper for a fat woman. A safe look. Even with the crazy cat heels. Until I take off the jacket. Dittos dress is rather unapologetic.

For another event I went with politics a few weeks ago, I wore another somewhat unusal dress: Anna Scholz Kimono or Sakura dress by Sheego. A wardrobe staple of mine that I have worn to an opening at the local art museum and at this winters‘ Fashion Week in Berlin. It was a lovely spring day. The dress an excellent choice. Even more so as such events are still dominated by men. Men in dark suits. I got quite a few compliments from other ladies there.

I think it is fun to break the rules. But to have fun doing so you should know where you clash and why. You should also consider your own position – what do you want. In a job interview or for an important presentation it is not very wise to completely alienate your audience. Little dabs are more appropriate in such a setting. On other occasions you can risk a bit more – and once people have accepted that, it not only becomes easier, at some point they might even expect it from you.

Modejahr2016 – Barbie Girl

This months theme for Modejahr2016 (fashion year) from Ines Meyrose is Outing – what I always wanted to show you. On Ines page is the full (German) blog parade. For the sake of it I couldn’t find an idea for an outfit until I realised I can show whatever I want. At the beginning of April I went spontaneously to Paris to see the amazing Beth Ditto and try on her lovely new collection. If you haven read my post – here is the link again.

Das Motto für diesen Monat bei Ines Meyroses Modejahr2016 ist Outing – was ich schon immer mal zeigen wollte. Auf Ines Seite kann man die Beiträge der anderen Bloggerinnen sehen. Ich habe mich mit dem Thema sehr, sehr schwer getan und wusste überhaupt nicht was für ein Outfit ich zeigen sollte. Bis mir auffiel, das es keines sein muss. Anfang April bin ich spontan nach Paris gefahren um die grossartige Beth Ditto und ihre neue Kollektion zu sehen. Hier ist nochmal der Link zu meinem Beitrag.

So that was half my trip sorted – but there was also the wonderful Barbie exhibition at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in one of the wings of the Louvre. Some of the French curves bloggers where a bit surprised why I wanted to go there.
Damit war natürlich schon der halbe Tag rum – es war aber noch Zeit für einen Besuch der wunderbaren Barbie Ausstellung im Musée des Arts Décoratifs in einem der Seitenflügel des Louvres.

I agree partiallty on the latter – but for me Barbie was never that. And I saw that there were all sorts of people around me of various heights, skin tones, eye colours and figures. Unlike playing with other dolls Barbie had a choice. Regular (baby) dolls have to be mothered, nursed. Barbie had a variety of jobs. A lot of them traditional female – like ballerina, nurse or beautican but she also was as astronaut, a soldier and a pilot among other things.
Teilweise stimmt das mit dem Körperbild. Allerdings habe ich Barbie nie darauf reduziert. Mir war immer bewusst das die Menschen um mich herum verschieden Körpergrössen und -formen hatten, unterschiedliche Augen- , Haar und Hautfarben. Anders als mit anderen Puppen hatte Barbie eine Wahl. Normale (Baby-) Puppen wurden bemuttert. Rollenverhalten geübt. Barbie hatte eine Auswahl an Berufen. Viele davon traditionell weiblich besetzt wie Ballerina, Krankenschwester oder Friseurin, aber sie war auch Astronautin, Soldatin und Pilotin, neben anderen Dingen.

Men (Ken) were ornamental.
Barbie war was auch immer sie sein wollte und hat trotzdem schicke Klamotten gehabt. Die Männer (Ken) waren die Deko.

I guess that really impressed me – you could invent yourself over and over again. I grew up in the 70s, early 80s – women for most parts were still either decorative or quite often perceived as career driven spinsters. Barbie showed you can have different roles and care about fashion. She could be a scientist and still wear a knockout dress at a party. Barbie didn’t have wait for her prince, she made a living on her own. Her life was full without being reduced to finding her sole fulfillment as a mother. She was a person of her own!
Das hat mich wirklich beeindruckt und geprägt. Sich immer wieder neu erfinden zu können. Ich bin in den 70gern und frühen 80gern gross geworden. Frauen wurden da meist noch als Deko oder halt als karriereversessene Männerhasserinnen angesehen. Barbie hatte diverse Berufe und dabei noch Spass an der Mode haben. Sie konnte Wissenschaftlerin sein und immer noch abends im Cocktailkleid beeindrucken. Barbie musste nicht auf ihren Prinzen warten, sie hat ihr eigenes Leben gestaltet. Ihr Leben war prall gefüllt ohne darauf beschränkt zu werden ihr einziges Lebensglück als Mutter zu finden. Sie war ihre eigene Person!

At least for me and many of my generation before the PR people at Matel targeted her from the very late 80s to the early 90s to a much younger audience and she became more princessy. Which also explaines the reacions of some of the much younger French bloggers. When I told them how I see Barbie, it was a new approach to them.
Zumindest war sie das für mich un viele aus oder um meine Generation herum. Bevor die PR Abteilung bei Matel in den späten 80gern und frühen 90gern beschlossen hatte sie für ein wesentlich jüngeres Publikum zu vermarkten und sie mehr und mehr zur Prinzessin wurde. Das erklärt dann auch wiederum die Reaktionen der wesentlich jüngeren Französischen Bloggerinnen. Mein Ansatz zu Barbie war ein neuer für sie.

MyStory – Tweed and Blue!

The football season is coming to a close and though VfL Bochum will not change into the German premier league, we are on a nice 4th place. And much, much more fun to watch than last season before the new coach. It started to get a little warmer for the last games – but it wasn’t around Easter – when the pics were taken. So yes, minus this pale blue coat I wear things like this to the game (different shoes though) or stuff like this or this in Summer. I love the retro vibe of the scarf I bought this season.

Die Spielsaison nähert sich dem Ende und auch wenn der VfL Bochum nicht in die erste Bundesliga wechselt sind wir auf einem schönen vierten Platz. Und es macht seit dem Trainerwechsel letzte Saison endlich Spass ihnen beim Spiel zuzusehen. Es wird auch endlich wärmer – auch wenn die Bilder zu Ostern aufgenommen wurden und da war es noch recht frisch. So – das trage ich tatsächlich zum Spiel (also mit anderen Schuhen) und gerne auch mit diesem Mantel. Wenn es wärmer wird dann wieder sowas hier oder auch das. Ich liebe den Retrolook meines Fan-Schals!

Last summer I quite fell in love with the blogger collection by Studio Untold. So many great things. The tweed pants instantly interested me. I knew when I saw these trousers that they were itchy – and they are. Truly. Ok, I am a proper pincess on the pea with tings like that. Anyway – a bit more lining would have been excellent. They were part of Lisa Mosh’s Blogger Outfit. What do you think?

Letzten Sommer habe ich mich ziemlich in die Blogger Kollektion von Studio Untold verguckt. Die Tweed-Hose hat mich auch mitten im Hochsommer sofort in den Bann geschlagen. Ok, mir war sofort klar, noch bevor ich sie anfasste, die würde ich als kratzig empfinden (denn dabei bin ich leider mega-empfindlich). Etwas mehr Fütterung wäre schön gewesen. DIY your Closet: A Day in Paris (with Barbie)

Today it’s about another go at DIY your closet and – tadaaaaaa – it’s not a hat, a mini-hat and neither fascinator nor headband. I customised a denim jacket. It was a bit too long for my petticoat dresses and skirts. At the GDS shoe fair in Düsseldorf I seriously admired Miss Ella’s cropped denim jacket. Which was bought that way. When I tried the H+M one on at home and realised it wasn’t short enough. So just before I set out to Paris, well before five in the morning I took out the scissors. And cut the waist(band) off. Voila – right length and we were good to go. Don’t hesitate to make things truly your own!

Paris – Amour Fou
Allegedly Audrey Hepburn said „Paris is always a good idea“. Well at least for a visit it is. I have a love/ hate relationship with Paris ever since I live there for a good half year. I worked as an Au-Pair, that didn’t help. I never felt lonelier in my live in a place but I remember the other Au-Pairs and some ladies from the American Church very fondly. The latter were what can be called my age now, at least but they welcomed this atheist into their fold. However I love Paris for visits. Especially short ones. Though this one was the shortest ever.

Felt a bit like a leftover Chocolate or praline easter egg. It was windy and cold and everyone else wore winter clothes.

I went for a day to Paris was for Beth Ditto’s trunk show (or as she put it playing dress up). Here is my blog post to that remarkable and fun event. It was great to meet a few of the French bloggers like Gaelle from The Curvy and the Curly Closet.

Leaving the Hotel. Sigh – it wasn’t just exquitely expensive and wonderfully discreet but also most stylish. However I leaned a new word – Bibi is French for (French) beret.

I’m a Barbie Girl….
After checking at the Trocadero if the Eiffel tower was still there (it is by the way but there was an ugly construction fence on the terrace) I went to the Louvre. Or rather to the wonderful Barbie exhibition at the Musee des Arts Decoratif in one of the wings of the Louvre. Not exactly the exhibition I solely would have gone to Paris for but still rather fitting the cliche. More on that exhibition later, in another post.

For me a trip to Paris isn’t complete without a visit to the grand Le Train Bleu in the Gare de Lyon with their magnificent painted ceiling. Yes, a bit like in a church, but they have a bar – and their Cocktail and Tapas offer isn’t cheap but worth the price for the complete package.

Quite a contrast to the night bus home. Which I don’t care to repeat. The money spent on the train is well spent, I was a bit under the weather the next day. All about priorities – a five star day and the cheap seats back. Ach well, it was fun and I must go to Paris more often – the last time was already 8 years ago!

Easter Parade – Endlich Frühling!

Spring is springing – finally! Easter came and went an was somewhat mixed weather wise. It was nice to be at the parents again though. My my and I shot four outfits. And I chip my bit in for Ines Modejahr (Fashion Year) 2016. I love her monthly challenges. Theme this month was spring colours. As with a proper blog hop you can see here what the others of the wonderful ü30blogger did (that means thirty plus, in case you wonder).

Endlich ist der Frühling da, mit den #GermanCurves wollten wir ihn zwar schon Ende Februar locken – aber jetzt sieht das anders aus! Das Osterwochenende war etwas durchmischt, dafür war es schön mal wieder bei den Eltern zu sein. Das ist mein Beitrag für Ines Modejahr 2016 – Thema diesesmal: Frühlingsfarben. Plus40Fabulous: Things I am proud of

Es gibt am Ende einen kurze deutsche Zusammenfassung, der Artikel selber ist auf Englisch.

Apart from a few things and groups I am affiliated with is the Plus40Fabulous group. There is a monthly theme and though I am late I am not too late for my contribution.

So what am I proud of?

There is the obvious thing on this blog – I am proud to be Miss Kittenheel. It is fun and I hope to inspire others to live the way they want it. Give a fig on what the others say. If you want retro – wear it, no matter what your size is. Yes, ridicule can sting but the feeling like you are outside, pressing your nose to the glass while there is a ball going on inside hurts too. It can cripple your soul. Do what makes you happy, what feels right for you! It took me quite a while to cmome to terms that over the years I became first a fat teenage girl and then as a woman the fat remained. Give or take a few diets which made everything worse in the long run.

I am a landscape architect. I have worked in two countries in my profession. It fills me with silly pride that I can touch the things I imagined. On my mothers side I am the first female with academic training and on my fathers side the first female with a degree in engineering, because that is the title I achieved. My job is diverse and chellenging. Of course there are downsides and I am not excited every day about it – but I wouldn’t be real otherwise.

I was raised to be proud to be a European first, before that nationalistic bollocks. These days I am not so proud of my Europe – but I am a stubborn creature and that is not something I let go off easily. So, the third (big) thing I am proud o is being a part time politican with a mandate on my local council. Getting there was a few years hard work and I nearly missed out (as it is politics after all). You can’t have politics without meddling and scheming. You got to have the stomach for that. And persistence. And to boldly go where you know you are not welcome. Where they don’t reserve a seat for you (and saw off the legs under the chair you are sitting on). I met a lot of people who struggled with that. You have to make a lot of compromises. But at some point you also got to draw a line or you loose being yourself.

Currently, for almost a year I am an independent member in my local council. I have left the party I got elected for. I am not proud of that. Had I the chance to turn back time I would do the very same thing again though. Sometimes life isn’t pretty. I started Miss Kittenheel for that. To have something where I am my own boss and just to my bidding. A happy place.

I started my life in politics with a back then new party who sadly started to desintegreate. A lot of what was important for me was lost out of sight. I try to carry some of that with me to my new political home. Civil rights, freedom and social issues are still very important. I started in a party that claimed to be post gender but the last year and recent developments made me realise we still need feminism, maybe more than five years ago.

I won’t burn my bra though but I do burn for equal chances. For a world (and my country) that give my god children the chances I got. For a society where people marry for love and not for provision. For a world where no means no. For a society where you can be whatever you want to be, without fear or persecution (as long as you don’t want to cut back the rights of others because they effing offend you).

Ich bin stolz auch meine drei Leben – ich arbeite als Landschaftsarchitektin und es ist schön die Dinge, die man sich ausgedacht hat anfassen zu können. Ich bin stolz auf Miss Kittenheel – denn ich hoffe so kann ich mehr Menschen erreichen, dass sie so leben, wie es sich für sie richtig anfühlt. Das mit dem Vorbild. Ein schöner, glücklicher Ort. Und ich bin stolz darauf in der (Lokal-) Politik mitzumachen. Gut, dass ist nicht immer so und manchmal fällt man auch unschöne Entscheidungen (immerhin bin ich seit knapp einem Jahr parteilos), aber manches ist notwendig. Für sich selber. In der Politik haben nicht immer alle darauf gewartet das man mitmachen will. Aber das trifft auch für das ganze übrige Leben zu. Und ja, ich bin Feministin – ich meine nicht das wir bessere Menschen als Männer sind. Allerdings ist das mit der Chancengleichheit immer noch unheimlich wichtig. Und das wir das bewahren und hüten ist vielleicht heute wieder wichtiger als noch vor zwei oder drei Jahren.

French Curves: Mix et Match – c’est moi!

Le 16 du mois est passé et c’est le temps pour un autre challenge du French Curves. Ce mois avec le thème des imprimés different – le mix et match. J’ai vu ça et pense: c’est moi, c’est Miss Kittenheel.
The 16th of the months has passed and it is time for another challenge of the French Curves. This month with „mix and match“ – combining different prints. Saw that and thought – well, that’s me, that’s Miss Kittenheel.

Ma tenue d’hier – pour faire des courses. La robe des journaux des chats est toujours populaire mais avec des talons de chaton – c’était une autre chose et définitif pas la dernière fois!
Yesterdays outfit – to go shopping and the usual round to the post office, etc. The cat dress is always popular but with the kitty heels it was something else – definitely not the last time I wear them together!

Mon look de mardi, en travail. J’adore des imprimés de paysage et le dernier est de LindyBop – Venise.

DIY your Closet – Fascinators 2015

Another month went by and I am probably a bit like a one trick ony as somehow ally my DIY projects are fascinators. Anyway – many thanks to the lovely Katha from Kathastrophal and Lisa from Mein Feenstaub for their „DIY your closet“project.

Wieder ist ein Monat vergangen und ich zeige mal wieder was mit Hütchen, ich mache halt nichts anderes selber. Anyway – vielen lieben Dank an die reizendende Katha von Kathastrophal und Lisa von Mein Feenstaub für ihr „DIY your closet“ Projekt.

I probably grew up watching the wrong films. I grew up in the casual 70s but on 1950s films. The ones I remember and enjoyed the most were films with Doris day or Marilyn Monroe. Always dressed to the nines and a new outfit in every new scene, or at least that’s the way it felt. And the ladies wore hats. Half hats, cocktail hats, turbans, toques, pillboxes, bandeau or headband hats, berets or other headpieces. We’d probably label some today as fascinators. That set my standards.

Wahrscheinlich habe ich als Kind einfach nur die falschen Filme gesehen. Ich bin in den zwanglosen 70gern aufgewachsen, aber mit Filmen aus den 1959gern. Die, an die ich mich am besten erinnere und am meisten mochte, waren die mit Doris Day oder Marylin Monroe. Immer perfekt gestylt und gefühlt ein neues Outfit in jeder Szene. Und die Damen trugen Hüte. Cocktailhüte, Turbane, Juliakäppchen, Baretts und andere Kopfbedeckungen. Einige davon würden wir heute als Fascinator bezeichnen. Wie auch immer, das war prägend.

Not only did these films set the spark first to collect hats but secondly to make my own fascinators. These a the ones I made for me in 2015. I prefer to use sinamay bases which I cover in fabric. So far I don’t decorate them with lots of things.

Diese Filme haben nicht nur den Wunsch geweckt Hüte zu sammeln, sondern auch meine eigenen zu machen. Das hier sind die, die ich 2015 gemacht habe. Dabei ist die Basis fast immer aus Sinamay und dann mit Stoff überzogen.

I love the furry ones. They are reclaimed fur from vintage 1950s or 60s caps or hats – too small, too dowdy and they get a new, a second life as a flirty fascinator. One of the very few (sustainable) ways to wear real fur.
Meine spezielle Liebe gilt meinen Pelzhütchen. Fast immer sind sie aus alten Pelzkappen aus den 1950gern oder 60ger Jahren. Die Kappen bekommen ein neues Leben, meist waren sie zu klein, zu altbacken. Ihr zweites Leben ist wesentlich verspielter um nicht zu sagen kokett. Für mich der nachhaltigste Weg echten Pelz zu tragen.

The feathers hackles are vintage too. I got them for silly money on my favourite flea market. As much as I like the grey one, I wonder if the colour contrast with the backside of the tweed in combination with the feathers is too much. The tartan is from a former colleague of mine. Nice quality and vintage material but cut into triangles.
Den Federschmuck für diese beiden Hütchen habe ich zu einem Spottpreis auf meinem Lieblingsflohmarkt gefunden. Beide sind vintage. Manchmal frage ich mich ob der Farbkontrast mit der Rückseite des Tweeds zu hart ist. Der Karostoff ist von einer ehemaligen Arbeitskollegin. Eine schöne, alte Qualität, aber der Stoff ist in Dreiecke geschnitten.

The grey one is my Christmas fascinator. Not too much over the top and only a bit of kitsch. But paired with my Bernie Dexter Winterwonderland dress it is. But in a good way. The colours are neutral and got along well with most of my Christmas outfits. I have worn it quite a bit before and around Christmas. At least six times and I wasn’t that social this year as I had my gall bladder removed at the beginning of December. The sparkling one is the fascinator I wore for New Years Eve. It was a top from H&M, not only a tad small at the arms and neck but also itchy as hell for moi.
Der graue ist mein Weihnachtsfascinator. Nicht zuviel und nur moderat kitschig. Kombiniert mit meinem Bernie-Dexter-Winterwonderland-Kleid ist es das schon. Aber auf eine gute Art. Die Farben sind neutral und passen zu den meisten meiner Weihnachtsoutfits. Ich habe ihn gerne und viel vpr und um Weihnachten herum getragen. Mindestens sechs Mal, da ich dieses Jahr nicht soviel unterwegs war und ich meine Gallenblase Anfang Dezember entfernt bekommen musste. Den glitzernden Fascinator hatte ich zu Silvester getragen. Eigentlich war das ein Top von H+M, nicht nur etwas zu schmal an den Ärmeln und am Hals sondern auch wahnsinnig kratzend.

The green velvet one was made for this Hell Bunny skirt and because I fell in love with the little toadstools. Usually I assemble the fascinators loosely and take a pic of them. Helps me to remember what I want to combine. Helps me also to to assess if they become an asset to my wardrobe or not. In the end I decided against the bow and went for a kitsch little souvenir brooch from the 50s.
Den grünen Samtfascinator habe ich für diesen Hell Bunny Rock gemacht und weil mir die kleinen Fliegenpilze so gut gefallen haben. Meistens drapiere ich meine Hütchen vorher locker zusammen und mache ein Bild davon. Das hilft mir später mich daran zu erinnern wie der später aussehen soll. Am Ende habe ich mich dann gegen die Schleife entschieden und eine kleine Andenkenbrosche aus den 50ger benutzt.

The first ones I made last year were the two cherry ones. Both are made out of the material left over from the shortened hem of my cherry dress. Most of my dresses get altered and sometimes there is enough fabric left to do seomthing with it.
Die ersten beiden Hütchen, die ich letzes Jahr gemacht habe sind diese beiden mit dem Kirschmotiv. Beide sind aus dem Stoff, der vom Einkürzen des Saumes meines Kirschkleides übrig blieb. Die meisten meiner Sachen müssen erst mal in die Änderung, manchmal bleibt genug Stoff übrig noch etwas damit zu machen.

my precious accessoiries

Recently on a whim I dyed my hair pink again. For my flamingo dress and because I wanted to do it again. Pink hair is fun. It is fading now but here are a few picks as a pink lady. Not as pink as last time though! But I just dyed over my middle blond.

Neulich habe ich mir die Haare nochmal pink gefärbt. Für mein Flamingo-Kleid und einfach so. Weil es Spass macht. Es verblasst gerade wieder, aber hier sind ein paar Bilder als es noch frisch war. Nicht so Pink wie beim letzten Mal, aber diesmal habe ich einfach nur mein Mittelblond überfärbt.

The lovely pink bag is from MyPepita which I got like Birgit from Charming Curves at a discount price. It is cute but a tiny bit to small to get my iPad in AND close the bag.
Die entzückende pinke Tasche ist von MyPepita. Genau wie Birgit von Charming Curves habe ich die zu einem reduzierten Preis bekommen. Mir gefällt die Tasche total gut, sie ist nur leider einen Hauch zu klein um mein iPad reinzubekommen UND die Tasche zu schliessen.
