Oktoberfest-Craze: Heimatliebe in Gingham

September is Dirndl time on my blog. An entire month to play with traditional or flokloristic clothing (and in Germany that usually means alpine) – time for Oktoberfest Craze. A proper dirndl is expensive – even a vintage or 2nd hand one. And the cheap ones look usually too much like fancy dress gone bad. But there are ways for a bit of that sound of music feel without a Dirndl.

Both dresses are simple gingham summer dresses. All cotton, cotton lined. Which is ace for day time events when it is still hot or balmy summer nights. And what I really like about these looks is you can wear most things whenever. It is the accessories that give it that country fair look.

A flower crown or headband and flokloristic or souvenir jewelry add a pastoral twist to this dress that can also we worn as a tribute to nostalgic ideas of a French summer.

Country Charme with Vintage Jewelry – a (plastic) Edelweiss bracelet, a souvenir and an enamel brooch plus a dainty enamel necklace.

An apron instantly adds dirndl vibes.

The apron is in an impeccable vintage condition – probalby from the 60s. Home sewn. The embroidered trim is industrialy produced. Still very pretty. Featuring edelweiss and gentian. The coarse linnen apron has pockets at the hem – large enough for beer bottles or as my mum sugested cloth pins. Priorities eh?

So setzt halt jeder andere Schwerpunkte.

The red hat adds a bit of glamour and drama to the yellow dress.

Der rote Hut verleiht dem Kleid Drama und Glamour.

I love flower crowns – they are so carefree and happy.

The tapestry bag is a staple for traditional looks. I have two – this one with a black base and another one in cream or beige. It has a good size too without feeling you are dragging half the things you own along.

Definitfely new(ish) – the quirky UK brand Irregular Choice melts traditional embroidery with a modern twist and still it looks spot on folksy.

Those pics in the yellow dress were taken 2 years ago – shortly before my parents moved out of their old house. The roses were gorgeous. But it is time to move on when all you see is work and can’t enjoy it anymore.

The only roses in by inner city courtyard are the ones on my shoes – it i quite green in the other corners but no abundance of fragrant old fashioned climbing roses.

Winter Warm: Boho and ZigZag

Two very artsy looks – office meets new years reception or gallery openings.

I love the green tartan dress for work. I have shown it on the blog for Christmas and in Spring. A very fitting colour for landscacpe architecture. Combined with the zigzag mock-Missoni blouse it is a fun low-key option for meetings. The accessories are a nod to my love for folkloristic clothing – this time of Eastern European heritage.

Look number two is seriously artsy. The golden skirt has been on my blog a few times as well. Low-key or dressed up. I love it around Christmas and New Year’s eve. With it’s fake leather like gold-coated and quilted material it isn’t really a summer skirt.

I love the folksy touch of the earrings, the bracelet and the scarf.

Oktoberfest Craze meets Gingham Love

A final contribution to my Oktoberfest Craze series I usually reserve for September. Gingham, checks and tartans work well with a traditional (mock) dirndl look. A real dirndl is still a costly thing despite cheap knock-ups. So this pretty Heidi dress with the deep square neckline fits the bill pretty well.

I combined the dress with a traditional Russian scarf and a vintage tapestry bag. The floral crown is a cheap one. If you are not going to a country wedding but the fair and the more rustic beer tents.

Frozen: Heimatliebe Cosy Swans

A touch of classical alpine wear meets bonny swans. Something old, something new and something upcycled. With the help instructions of Ricarda Engelsberger from Mein Wunderbarer Hutsalon I upcycled a bavarian styled trilby into a 50s half hat.

I got the dress late in 2016. and I really like it. Same wall – dolled up for New Year’s and here pretty in Paris.

Let it Snow: A Christmas Dirndl

A dirndl isn’t just for Oktoberfest. Though technically this isn’t really a dirndl. The corsage is proper traditional alpine style and the skirt is from LindyBop. I wear a pin up blouse underneath.

I had a dress from the same fabric. But the waist was too high and the skirt too long. And since that couldn’t be altered, I sold it.

And just to show off we had a bit of snow for the pictures.  Looks so much more appropriate. The withe dashs and shirt stripes are snow – it was still snowing as we took the pics.

Oktoberfest Craze: Dirndl-Time

It is late October and the Munich Oktoberfest is over. Lots of local ones are still on. this year there is no Octoberfest for me. But there is always next year. Still I got a Dirndl-Look for you and so have some of my readers.

Yes, the brooch matches the handbag.
Ja, die Brosche passt zur Handtasche.

…and some of my readers – like Anja from PrimeTimeWoman in a classic long dirndl. Very classy and sophisticated. Perfect for the beer tent and the opera or a wedding.

Life would be boring without a little sparkle. This is Jes Si and her look is more here and now. With a statement necklace.

Last one in the row and to round off the selection is Sar HA. Hers is a sweet and very down to earth dirndl. A real country dress, that wouldn’t look out of place on a meadow. Note to self – get one of those eventually, too.

Back to me and my mix and match Dirndl. I don’t like the typical dirndl blouses and I don’t do aprons.
Punkt.

Oktoberfest-Craze: Dark Dirndl + Mitmachaktion

When I was a child I loved a good dirndl. When I was four or five we stayed on a holiday flat on a farm. There I was given (or rescued) a dirndl ready to be turned into rags. I didn’t know the word authenticity yet. But I liked the realness of it. That it wasn’t some touristy stuff.

Fast forward more than 20 years. When I lived in Manchester I fell in love again with this kind of dress. I wanted a vintage one. This is dirndl no.4. Bought two years ago. On eBay. First worn to an awful local Oktoberfest.

This year I guess there will be no Oktoberfest for me. So I’ll wear it to the office and wherever.

And here is where you can join me: send me a pic (or a link on instagram) wearing your dirndl or similar outfit until 20.09.2017 and on Sunday, 24.09.2017 I’ll show your pics along with a somewhat more traditional approach for me. By sending me your pic or the link you agree that I might publish them.

Welcome to another round of German Curves . And welcome to autumn. My favorite season. In September I celebrate my love for traditional clothing. Albeit with a twist. Think the Sound of Music style Dirndl dresses and such.

Behütet has in German two meanings – it comes from wearing a hat (or bonnet) and also means sheltered. Because when you where able to afford a hat quite often you where. At least in the past. As in a few centuries ago.

The hat of my choice is an original 1950s hat. Real vintage. It has that hunting vibe and is perfect for fall or an autumnal look.
Vintage. Ein keckes Hütchen im Jagd-Look. Perfekt für den Herbst.

The dress is from LindyBop. I bought it from another blogger. The cleavage is super low and I need to ear something underneath or my bra shows. Really shows. That’s why I prefer to wear it as a skirt. With a top or a blouse over it.

I quite like it for a cheap and cheerful dirndl surrgogate. As a good dirndl, even a vintage one doesn’t come cheap. So, if funds are short and you dont have lots of events to wear a traditional alpine dress this will do. I dare say even in Munich for hte Oktoberfest.

I am not a big of frilly dirndl blouses and puff sleeves, so I wear a pin-up blouse underneath. The matching flower wreath or headband is also on the low budget side and from Claire’s.

I don’t like the huge floral headbands you can buy, most of them look rather tacky. And you might get some sniggers from the sniggers from the locals and the comment of being dressed up like a „Pfingstoche“.

Edelweiss locket – could be from the 1960s or earlier.

DIY your Closet: Oktoberfest Craze Hat Workshop

My year with DIY your Closet found a worty finale – the hat workshop Shape up your Hat! by the inspiring Ricarda from Mein wunderbarer Hutsalon (my wonderful hat shop – a pun on the German title of the 1980s film my beautiful launderette). Under her masterful supervision I turned a boring country hat into a 1950s inspired cocktail hat for my own series Oktoberfest Craze.

misskittenheel-vintage-plussize-wunderbarerhutsalon-halfhat-trachten-diyyourcloset-02

I met Ricarda Engelsberger in June at Ladies Day – the horse racing day with a hat competition of the prestigious Krefeld jockey club. About two month later she invited me to this Workshop. Last week we finally met and it was a one on one supervision. For her not that exeptional as the event is limited to two to three participants anyway.

Ricarda Engelsberger an der Industrienähmaschine. / at the industrial sewing machine.misskittenheel-vintage-plussize-wunderbarerhutsalon-halfhat-trachten-diyyourcloset-07

For Ricarda Engelsberger hat making isn’t a hobby. It is a craft she learned from the ropes, including the hard earned title of a master milliner from the german Chamber of Crafts. She produces model hats and mini series since 1998. Her workshop is in Wuppertal, a historic district called Arrenberg. Here she is also active in the local community to enhance the quarter. Some of you will know Ricarda Engelsberger or her creations from the German magazine Vintage Flaneur.

If in Wuppertal… quite cool to take the suspension railway again. Fun fact: we realised that Ricarda and I were neighbours for about 3 years back in the 1990s in another part of town. We lived door to door. The world truly is a small place!
misskittenheel-vintage-plussize-wunderbarerhutsalon-halfhat-trachten-diyyourcloset-01

Ricardas Atelier ist klein aber fein. Alles drin was man braucht.
Ricarda’s work space is small but neat. Everything to work properly. Well sorted and still with a loving touch to details.misskittenheel-vintage-plussize-wunderbarerhutsalon-halfhat-trachten-diyyourcloset-24

Kleine Demonstration – der Hutweiter aus den 50gern. Die Heizspirale blieb dafür aus.
The audio is crap on this one – basically it is a hat stratcher from the 50s. The hot spiral isn’t switched on.

We first spruced up a hat I bought at Oma Klara. Sadly the hat was folded for shipping. Not a way to treat a hat that was kept for good for a lifetime. Ricarda managed to make it shine again and fluffed up the flowers that were flatter as pancakes.

Enough faffing around – you want to know what we did at the workshop.

Also als erstes haben wir uns mal meine Vorlage angeschaut und ich habe Ricarda erklärt was damit prinzipiell passieren soll.
First we had a look at my old hat and I explained what I’d like to turn it into.

Ausgangsmodell: biederer Trachtenhut. Bei eBay wegen der Federn erworben. Zu klein.
Before: traditional German „country“ hat. Bought on eBay because of the feather pad. Too small to fit my head.

Vision: 1950ger inspirierter Half-Hat oder Cocktailhut im Jagd-Look. Erhalt und Weitervervendung der Original-Garnitur.
After: 1950s inspired bandeaux or half hat in a hunting style using the original trimmings

Arbeitsschritte Steps taken:misskittenheel-vintage-plussize-wunderbarerhutsalon-halfhat-trachten-diyyourcloset-23

measuring the hat and the model (the leo one with the brown ribs in the collage above)
explanation how to make a half hat and its construction and design approach how many parts the final product will have
  • Vorlage abschmücken, Ripsbänder abtrennen
    dismanteling the old hat
  • Skizzieren der Bestandteile mit Schneiderkreide
chalking the parts on the old hat
  • Ausschneiden und Glattbügeln der Einzelteile der Filzgrundlage
cutting and ironing the parts from the felt base
  • Garniturtest (und Mittagspause)
mocking up the decoration and lunchbreak
pegging and sewing together the felt base (Ricarda took over at the industrial sewing machine – I chickened out on that day)
wiring the underconstruction and adding a headband underneath
testing the base. We made the shape a bit slimmer. Pictured is the final product.misskittenheel-vintage-plussize-wunderbarerhutsalon-halfhat-trachten-diyyourcloset-04
  • Aufbringen der Garnitur und des alten Etiketts. Alles von Hand.
bringing on the trimmings and feathers as well as the old label, All by hand.
  • Tadaaaaaa! Fertig
    Job done!

Kaum wiederzuerkennen!
Hardly recognizable! On the model. Die feather pad is kept close to the base and arch a little into the forehead. I usually wear discreet earrings, so there will be no conflict with the overhanging trimming.

Und jetzt angezogen! Ein Traum. Ricarda und ich waren sehr begeistert.
And now worn. Fits like a dream. Ricarda and I were very excited about the result.

About DIY your Closet

DIY your Closet is about making your own things or in my case to upcylce or customise. Usually every second Sunday – this month I am ahead of schedule. Many thanks to the lovely Katha from Kathastrophal and Lisa from Mein Feenstaub for their „DIY your closet“project. On Katha’s side is (from Sunday morning)  the blob hop with the other participants as well as on Lisa’s site.

Okotberfest Craze: Tartan meets Dirndl

So you’d like to go to Oktoberfest but a classic Dirndl is too expensive and the cheap ones too much like a Halloween costume? There are ways to create that look without the full commitment. Either in a cheerful or with a darker note. Another easy way to do it is pick a dress and wear it with an apron. Like Gemma from Retrochick last year in Munich.

Although quite often in the past (and not just the 1950s) women also wore scarfs as aprons. And that is what I did for this outfit. A pretty tartan dress from Hell Bunny with a sweet heart neckline. Combined with a modern oblong scarf, not a square in a traditional folklore pattern.

The flower wreath or headband emphazises the traditional look. Make sure you get a nice one. Like the one I got from Tate Milinery. The garish ones will remind a lot of people of the ceremonial driving down of cattle from the mountain pastures into the valley in autumn. And you don’t want that. Or maybe you do?
