The KittyBike at the Tweedrun Gütersloh

Last weekend I joined my first Tweedrun. A Tweedrun is a group tour on historic (or retro) bikes dressed in classic British attire. A mix of Downton Abbey and Landgirls on bikes. The location for my first one was in Gütersloh. Where it is nice and flat. It was on St. George’s Day, rather fitting.

When I picked out the event (and had lengthy thoughts about my outfit) one thing became clear – I didn’t have an adequate bike for it. As „der bike“ is fast and light, but not at all retro. Nor did I know someone who’d borrow me theirs.

Last year one of my best friends told me that he still had an old bike on the attic. That was when I voluntarily gave up not only driving for three weeks for cycling but also being taken along in a car. The latter is darn unpractical.  Anyway – on the first Sunday in April I met not only the other godchild and family for ice cream but also to meet the bike.

The bike used to belong to my friend’s grandmother. Bought with the grandfather’s in a matching set together with a gentleman’s bike with a bar. After the grandmother died, his grandfather decided the bar was too much hustle to handle. After he died the bike went up onto the barn’s attic. And there it stayed for about 15 years.

It was rusty in places and  overall rather dirty, the tires were flat, the front light broken. But a Gazelle is made to last. The classic Holland bike. Dark green. No fancy gears – but it runs smooth. It weighs too much to take it along on a daily commute. The lifts are way too often out of order for that.
In Dunkelgrün.

Pimp my Bike
Pimp my Bike

When I checked how much new white tires would be I came across pink ones. Ohhhhh. Yes. And I wanted a pink garland. and a fancy bell. And new panels at the side. Found tartan ones. Some of my friends shook their heads when I showed them the conept board. but in the end we agreed the overhauled bike was very much me. So I named it the KittyBike – yes, it is female.

I found the accessories on eBay. A lot in a local shop where I work. But they only sell bike parts. I made the mistake to ask them to make it ready. They blotched up the job and I gave the bike to my usual place. Who could have ordered me the pink tires, too. The bike was finally ready for usage (and safe enough to be on the streets) only a few days before the ride. So no getting used to the saddle.

So after only a few miles on the KittyBike we went to a 20k bike ride with coffe and cake in the middle. 20k isn’t much but when things don’t work out it can feel rather long. Fortunately it was plain sailing. The bum and the saddle had no problems with each other. There was enough space for the bike on the train on the way out and back again. I managed to make the fascinator for the day on the way.

The Tweedrun at Gütersloh is an event from the local town marketing. Already the fourth one. It starts and ends in the courtyard of thelovely historic city museum. A smallish but stylish tour for 80 participants. I think we started out with about 60-70. The weather was cold and windy. Before we set out it even rained a bit. Ok, only drizzle but not your average idea of nice cycling weather.

Well dress people dancing – what a pleasant sight.

The bikes were mainly historic. A Swiss army bike was there along with a penny farthing. Lots of lovely bikes mainly from the 50s. A few gentlemen told me they’d better not show any pics of my bike to their other halves as they were afraid the pink „wheels“ might catch on. I met quite a number of interesting people. Including the organizers of the Tweedrun in Rheine on May 14th, 2017. It is the day of the regional elections – so I’ll give that one a miss. Sadly. Maybe next year.
Schade. Aber vielleicht nächstes Jahr.

The gentlemen were quie a sight. I do like men in suits. But the ladies were also a sight to behold. Original tweed suits met jodhpurs and a few interesting hats. Still I was a bit more colourful than most. And the only lady in a larger plussize. The ride itself was an easy tour, the speed a bit too relaxed for my liking. The wind was chilly and I changed the fascinator  against my black beret for the way back.On the plus side – my fascinator is quite wind- and bikeproof.

In the end there were a few prices – for the best dressed lady, gentleman, bike, etc. But I would have like to find the opportunity for a chat with Sybille Hilgert from Ladyblog but maybe next time. I saw the saussage dogs from the blog though. I cut my visit short as my train only left once an hour. And it was still cold and windy and looked like it would start to drizzle anytime again. So I quickly said my good-byes. I’ll be back next year!

Fresh as Spring – Frühlings-Frisch – ü30Blogger & Friends

Hardly anything I own says spring as clearly as this Frollein von Sofaa like this the pretty lily of the valley hat. This is the third blogpost this month featuring this hat. First for cooler days with tartan and green. And another version in a soft pastell green with a flary skirt. Together with the ladies from the German ü30-bloggers we made a blog parade to celebrate Fresh as Spring.

This was meant to be an outfit for a party. A party like a christening, a birthday, a holy communion. But actually this is an outfit for a wedding. And not as a guest. And no, I didn’t elope. Nor any plans to get married. Which is quite tricky as a single.

Anyway – it is a great bridal outfit for a civil or registry wedding. And it wasn’t expensive either. The hat was deerer than the suit. I got the small bag back in 2005, bought for a christmas do. The buttoniere was a present in a very simple brick-a-brac-place. Looks like the very same flowers.

Hach.
The parental garden showed itself from its freshest side – with fresh budding leaves but also with fresh temperatures. The Japanese cherry was in full bloom. Pink petals snowing onto the green lawn. Daisies adrift in a pink snowstorm. The magnolia at the small pond. So pretty.

To the Races: a Hat for a Vintage Drama Queen

The racing season is soon again in full swing. Time to dust off your hats ladies! Can’t wait for the ladies day at the races in Krefeld. This year we’ll have a vintage picnic on the lawn next to the stalls. As I am still waiting for a comossioned hat I decided to look for a plan b in my own wardrobe. And came across this true vintage hat.

What a hat! It is a showstopper. Seriously glamorous. I’d believe me if it was worn by a star from the 1950s. And yet it wasn’t. It is true vintage. From the 1950s. Unllike my clothing. But like many of my accessories. And I have a thing for vintage hats.

This came to me in a sad condition. Folded in its parcel. Auch! But professional hatmaker Ricarda Engelsberger revived it. So don’t be afraid to seek out help. It is worth it.
In seinem Paket gefaltet. Aua!

I was still in doubt if that hat was me. I did not like the way it sat on my hat the way it was meant to be worn. As a rather short person I felt somewhat excluded from the world with a shell on top. And I don’t know why but the night before we took the pics I looked at it and thought. It would be much better if the rim was a bit different. So I tried it on the wrong way round – yes, much better!
Also habe ich ihn einfach mal andersherum aufgesetzt: Bingo!

Now it frames my face and allows me to see the world. With hats, depending on their shape there isn’t really a wrong way. Wear it the way you want to and that suits you. Better worn „wrong“ than perching in a box on your wardrobe.

The „merry widow“ suit is from Dolly & Dotty. Last year I was gifted with the jacket and bought the matching pencil skirt a few months later. Together with the one in large grey checks. I love the latter one to bits. A fery classic fifties style suit.

A bit austere. But sometimes that is exactly the required thing. Not my first choice to attend a wedding, holy communions or christenings. But when a sleek outfit is needed, it fits the bill. For the races it makes an excellent canvas for a glamorous hat.
Etwas streng zusammen.

The nude heels are a bit of a no brainer. Sturdy low heels so you can walk over cobble stones or stand on the lawn without sinking in. The soles are padded too. The shape is classic and still elegant. The crocodile handbag is an original from the early 1960s and from my paternal grandmother. Ever since I have my tablet I hardly use it anymore. It is a bit too small for that and the tablet my constant companion.

FrenchCurves: Bodycon – Wiggle Dress

Aaargh – the theme of the month for the French Curves is Bodycon. For me a real challenge. I only got two dresses that are a bit bodycon. Tight fitted but not too much. One is the purple velvet dress from February. The other is this one. A very Mad Men styled dres, early 60s.

Combined with a Saucer hat from Pin Up Girl Clothing and simple but triking sunnies from Primark. It was too warm for the jacket.

Not quite the typical outfit to go to a demonstration. But it was the rally for #PulseofEurope. More than 300 people and two observers to keep the peace from the local police. And yes we demonstrated Pro-Europe (the video is a bit lenghty but I am in the human chain at 5:59min). My parents raised me as a European first and German second.

Spring Hat meets Spring Dress

English only today.

One of the things we in the first world got accustomed to is the availablilty of products. Sstrawberries in winter. Roses around the year. As a garden enthusiast (though for quite some time now one without a garden) or better a plant enthusiast I love the seasons. And things are more precious when they are only available for a short time.

I don’t love winter. Winter comes with the rest of the seasons in a set. A bit like a gatecrashing guest. But that makes spring all the lovelier. I love the white carpet of the anemone nemorosa in our beech woods, the lush pink Japanese cherry blossoms, green leaves in general. The scents of a hyacinth field. The dainty lilies-of-the-valley.

One of the hatmakers I admired for quite a while, Frollein von Sofa made this lovely ode to spring. Last week I showed it with darker tones. A highland fling in a wiggle dress. This time I paired my hat with much airier colours. Light greens – a pale pea and a soft pistachio and a striking contrast with the pinkish tartan bag.

The dress comes with pockets. And though I don’t love polka dots the way I used too I really like this one (and its white friend). It is a spring dress, worn with a spring hat. I bought both last year.

Last year I was on quite a bit of a shopping spree. Since the beginning of the year I keep a wardrobe diary so that I’ll keep track of the things I wear and how often I do so. Most of us have come across the tip to turn the hangers around once you have worn something. But for me that wasn’t enough. I wanted to know how much mileage my things get.

I had to make a list first. And yes, I was surprised I have so many things. Dresses mainly. It is nice to have a lot of pretty frocks but it doesn’t really make you a happier person. Or more content. Though I don’t struggle with that. I love clothes. I come from a family of collectors. China, radios, clocks, art, books, plants. Or clothes, shoes, hats and other accessoires. But at some point it got a bit out of hand. So right now I try to focus.

I got a lot of amazing things. But I want to give my things a bit more mileage. And I still have a few things you haven’t seen here on the blog yet. And yes – I have plans to buy a few things to add to my wardrobe.

Hello Spring – my Lily of the Valley Hat

Hello Spring! The foliage is coming back. Green is sprucing. Time to get this beautiful hat from Frollein von Sofa out. I bought it last year in Berlin. It’s name is Enie, after the gorgeous Enie van de Meiklokjes. Who wears a lot of the Frolleins pretty confections!

I combined this charming hat with the Pin Up Girl Clothing dress I wore in Berlin in Summer and for the German Curves for a green valentine.

I do love my greens. The dress has a glorious pin up style. And with the black blouse underneath it is proper office wear, too. The jacket is from Murek, bought at the Plussize Fashion Days in Hamburg last October.
The tapestry bag is real vintage.

The little hat „only“ has a vintage vibe. But what a vibe. This is spring. I lusted after this hat for a few month and when I was in Berlin I bought it together with another one from the Frollein. In the end we regret the things we didn’t do more.

GermanCurves: Fly me to the Moon

It’s the first Sunday of the month and time again for the German Curves. This month it is a theme that really excites me „Fly me to the Moon“. There are many versions of this classic song. The challenge is about metallic, glitter, galaxy prints, silver and futuristic look.

Diesen Monat ich ich besonders angetan von unserem Thema „Fly me to the Moon“. „Fly me to the Moon“ ist ein klassischer Song.

There is hardly a better place in the Ruhr area for space exploration than Bochum. We got an observatory and a planetarium. The Zeiss planetarium Bochum has an excellent program, modern equipment, a very commited director and her dedicated team. They got a new show this year and I am gutted that I won’t be able to attend the opening night.

Still, despite that the planetarium makes me think of the late 50s, early 60s. The so called space age. The believe that the future will be a brighter, happier and wealthier place. The firm believe in science and progress, in technological advancements. Today an increasing number is sceptic of science, against vaccinations and eager for hairsplitting conspiracy theories.

But science is the very foundation of the comfort and infrastructure we enjoy today. No matter how firm you believe in whatever deity, prayers didn’t give us the Internet, modern medicine or public transport. Although the latter tests my patience on a regular basis.
So when the theme was announced for the German Curves, I instantly knew what I wanted to wear (again). Again? Well, I have worn this outfit for the opening Motto party of Kurvenrausch’s Plussize Days in Hamburg in October 2016. Back then it was „Black, Gold and all that Glitters“.

Wieder? Ich hatte dieses Outfit zur Eröffnungsparty von Kurvenrauschs Plussize Fashion Days im Oktober 2016 in Hamburg getragen. Damals war das Motto „Black, Gold and all that Glitters“.

The dress is my trusted Audrey this time in black satin. Combined with a galaxy (actually a nebula) loop scarf. Which I always wear to the planetarium. Like here to the festive 50th anniversary celebration or here to the opening of their Jules Verne Show. The petticoat os too short – I just realised that when I edited the pics.
The real showstopper of the outfit is the little retro rocket. I adopted it from Accessorize in Berlin while changing trains to get from one place to another at the Winter Fashion Week 2016. Unfortunately it isn’t roomy at all.

The shoes are high, even better – they glitter.
The fascinator with lurex is another one of my own. I made it for New Years Eve 2015/2016. It gets quite a bit of mileage.

I wish I know where I put this bracelet (part of the 2014 Geekchic at the Planetarium Outfit). I got the nagging feeling that I need a replacement. I used to wear it a lot before I put it somewhere safe so that I didn’t loose it.
