Heimatliebe: Space Cowgirl rides Again

After a glum but mild winter, spring is finally here. And I promised you the sweater from the Rodeo collection – yeah, the one were I first got the blouse and then the dress.

The irony is cruel – the fun cowgirl with the UFO in the back is classic 1950s atomic design references and for me also forever linked with the cold war. But now as Russia invaded the Ukraine, a pan-European conflict with Russia suddenly is very real and not just an abstract threat. My generation, born in the 70s, experienced the end of the cold war in our teenage years. We saw perestroika and glasnost, but never NATO in full alert.

Amidst all those terrifying news it helps to get out. And since the weather is lovely right now, I took #derFahrrad for a spin and asked a friend who lives locally to tag along.

The main destination (at least for me) was the Bismarckturm Delecke. 22 of these towers in memory of the „iron“ Reichs-chancellor are still dotted over Northrhine-Westfalia. And my Corona „travel“ project since November 2020 – and no I am not a fan of the old man nor do I approve of blatant nationalism – that is why these towers were built. This is number 13 and the last that was built. Nine of these mostly phallic monuments are stil left to visit. The tower in the back of the post with the blouse last year is the one in Tecklenburg.

You can already get a glimpse of the Möhnesee from the tower. To my readers from the UK (and the US – or any military buffs) – that is the dambusters lake. The bombing made a gap in the middle and as a result war related industries had only temporary setbacks but also about 1700 lives were lost in the floods. 1000 of which were prisoners of war and slave labourers.

The distorted idyll – not a result of flooding than a mix of droughts and the bark beetle. So many hills and valleys look similar. It is a heartbreaking sight. Climate change is real.

ü30 Blogger & Friends: Karo – Country Check

Time to join the ladies from the ü30 blogger network for this month’s theme „Karos (Check/Plaid or Tartans)“ – I think they are neutrals, like stripes. I love my plaids, even neutral ones. So for today I chose a set I haven’t shown yet – the pants are too large these days and in the basement storage now, the skirt will soon go the same way. The sweater is originally a Christmas one – but I think it still works fine as winter wear in January and Fabruary.

Country Christmas: Jolly Holly

Hohoho – I am a bit late for this Christmas post. But I got a bit of a relapse with a bronchitis and then things got a bit unpleasant in local politics and suddenly the priority wasn’t my blog. Anyway – remember this lovely Hellbunny holly dress from 2018?

Corona Christmas means also for me back to the core family. Usually I have my extended family (and/ or „adopted“ friends) around for Christmas Eve. A jolly round. Not this year. This year it was the parents and me. With the matching table cloth this is very Stepford Wives – but trust me I haven’t been brainwashed (or replaced by a robot).

Country Christmas (in the suburbs) – the corsage has been around for Christmas before. Same broderie anglaise blouse as with the holly dress but paired with a tweed skirt.

My trusted tailor turned a very long Ralph Lauren (the last one left at TK Maxx) into a square table cloth, two cushion covers for my mum, one larger one for me and a handful of masks.

The Miss Holly fascinator is new – another one by Frollein von Sofa. Not sure where I got the necklace from. If I got it from H6M or vinted. But unlike the large trinket necklace I actually like to wear it.

A love of China – I got that from my mum – the sets are mix and match, 1950s originals. I even got a fourth one – just in case.

I finally „rewired“ the 1950s or 60s nativity scene. It is now restored to its kitschy colourful state.

Jetzt leuchtet die kitschige kleine 50ger Jahre Krippe wieder in alter bunter Pracht.

While other spread hate Leila and I decided to spread a little joy, hope and light in dark times. So we printed a post card and put it in around 2000 letterboxes within 3 days. And yes that was exhausting and yes you have indeed seen that dress beofre!

I now own a traditional German Christmas pickle – albeit that is more a hoax than a tradition as most Germans don’t even know about it.

I hope you all had a very merry and relaxing Christmas!

Ladies Day 2016 – The best Vintage Hats at the Races

Finally and long awaited it was time for the Ladies Day at the racecourse in Krefeld on the 11th of June 2016. About 6200 gave their best to bring a touch of Ascot to this beautiful racecourse in Germany.

A bit smaller than expected was our Vintage Corner – Karen (on the left) from Tate Millinery with her charming hats in a 1920s to 1950s look did a sterling performance and held fort. Unfortunately the Vintage Flaneur, the monthly German vintage and lifestyle magazine had to cancel on short notice to our and their sincere regret.

The hat comepition in bright sunlight was not surprisingly much better attended than last year in the rain. The jury had a tough time do decide and that is why the vintage price (original or repro) was split up.misskittenheel vintage plussize pinup ladiesday 2016 rennclub krefeld galopprennen 10

Quite clean from the front this hat is a real showstopper from the back. Ricarda from „my wonderful hat shop“ made this 1950s creation adorned with berries and roses. She is a certified master milliner and offers hat workshops. I find the „shape up your hat“ most interesting since I recently bought a rather sad 1950s half hat that needs a serious makeover.

My outfit of the day – if in doubt wear dots. Dolly and Dotty has a very similar style – Lola in retro green and in forest green – both almost sold out. All in all you can get this style in 19 colours.

Once again I wear one of my many shrugs – this time in blush. The surdy heels are the sensible choice when you also have to walk across the lawn or on gravel. The cow clutch adds to that rustic look. Fascinator and hunting themed silk scarf are both 1950s originals.

Save the Date: Pferderennen mit Hut + Vintage Corner

Please save the date: Saturday, June 11th, 2016 is Ladies Day at the racecourse in Krefeld. Like the well known Ladies Days in the UK it is a great opportunity to dress up a little and wear a hat or fascinator.

Hier geht es zum Facebook-Event! Here is the Facebook-Event!

Thought it would be a great thing to combine that with a Vintage meeting. Sometimes all you got to do ist ask (and then make it happen) – so in Kooperation with the Krefelder Rennclub there will be a first Vintage Corner this year. We are still filling this with life but you’ll have the chance to buy some more beautiful hats!

There will be a hat competition like the other years but with a special price for the best vintage (or repro) hat.

No English version for this one – it is about the traditional style without the stereotypical Dirndl.

Keine Lust aufs Dirndl – Trachtenmode mal anders

Miss Kittenheel vintage plussize style trachten

Miss Kittenheel Oktoberfest Craze Fun at the Fair

Miss Kittenheel Vintage Plussize Style Dolly Dotty Tartan Tracht 1950s PinUp Rockabilly

Oktoberfest Craze: Dolly&Dotty in Tartan meets Trachten

When Dolly and Dotty approached me to feature one of their dresses I was very excited. They are a vintage reprodutction brand and my style is vintage and due to my size reproduction for anything apart from accessories. It was tough to pick only one dress – this stripey one caught my eye and this white one would have been an excellent choice to wear to that All White Party at the last Plussize Fashion Days in Hamburg (couldn’t go because of work). I also liked this one with coral – reminds me of a day by the sea side. But there was one in red Tartan, actually two – a v-neck one and this one with the bateau neckline.

Tartan isn’t just wonderful for Christmas (just look at Betty Pamper and her pug Mr. Truffles), it is good all year round. Especially for work. Though this isn’t really a work outfit.

The Sound of Music has a Highland Fling

Miss Kittenheel Vintage Plussize Style Dolly Dotty Tartan Tracht 1950s PinUp Rockabilly

Almost ten years ago when I lived in the UK I fell in love with Trachten – our German traditional clothing. Most of that is alpine inspired and more a regional thing southern Germany shares with Austria and Switzerland rather than the north. I love the materials – rich wools or felts (though I struggle to wear them), colourful scarves (with or without fringes) and quite often intricate embroidery on Dirndls, jackets or trousers.

So I combined my love for tartans, the Dolly&Dotty dress in Royal Stewart with the alpine look and I really like it. The grey new wool jacket has a traditional cropped style, called Janker in German, the scarf is typical, too. The fascinator is one of my very own, made by me with vintage tweed and feathers. The traditional style feather hackle was a flea market find. The bag is from Laura Ashley, lovely rough tweed – got it a few years back on eBay, like the vintage tapestry brooches, though I got them more recently.

Miss Kittenheel Vintage Plussize Style Dolly Dotty Tartan Tracht 1950s PinUp Rockabilly

The dress is made of cotton without stretch. The sizing is according to their charts. Once more I was between sizes. As with most dresses I had the hem shortened and the waist nipped in. I look way too short with a classic midi length and I like to show off my calves. The jacket is a bit on the tight side, hopefully that’ll change next time I feature it here as I need to get a bit more active again. The shoes and tights are dark grey, they look on my screen a bit purple/blue.

Miss Kittenheel Vintage Plussize Style Dolly Dotty Tartan Tracht 1950s PinUp Rockabilly

The Sound of Music has a Highland Fling

The pattern matches nicely at the seam
Miss Kittenheel Vintage Plussize Style Dolly Dotty Tartan Tracht 1950s PinUp Rockabilly

Ok, though this winter is lacking somewhat around here in cold temperatures – it is time to post this wonderful jacket by Collectif Clothing. I promised that to Froilein Olivia some time ago. Marianne is part of a suit and Hackey Rose’s blogpost is to die for – she has this in pink though. Though I love pink, I thought it would be too sweet and I got this set in green for silly money in the sale. I couldn’t size up the skirt – and that is why you won’t see it on moi (at least for a while). It fits like a glove, or rather as we say in German like a saussage in skin („Wurst in Pelle“). Not an extra layer – but am quite stuffed to the brim. Anyway – it is still a great jacket and looks good and wintery.

The jacket is made with fake fur. Worn here with a vintage (real) fur set. The mini hat is reclaimed mink and was a dowdy cap before I made this fascinator out of it. The brown inlay is a fur brooch, also dating from the 1950s or 1960s.

With closed eyes – but a good view of the fascinator!

The parents and I went to the Bundeskunsthalle in Bonn – for an art exhibition. Matching the Japanese theme were the decorations in the cafe. Pics inside were not allowed.

On the way to celebrate Christmas with the family. With my showstopping Bernie Dexter Winterwonderland Dress. I think I look like a Christmas angel.

It twirls ranter nicely (and gives you the chance to admire the jacket in 360 degrees!

Inside and outside. My first Erstwilder brooch – I fell in love with that saussage dog (and a few others). You might have recognised the dress from last year.

Christmas Sweater Girl – mein Weihnachtspullover

A classic in the Anglo-American wardrobe it into my closet – my very own Christmas Sweater from Collectif Clothing (also available in Brown). Topvintage also has these, but like with quite a few of their items not up to my size – which is a whopping 4XL.

Alpengrün – another Christmas-Outfit

Yep, another Christmas outfit – from LindyBop. Unlike the #LindyBauble with the red checks or the #LindyMail with the mini black gingham dresses this is like my Bernie Dexter Winterwonderland dress a proper themed one. It sold out really quickly. No surprise it is lovely, not too much kitsch and the price was great, too. I think that works pretty nicely after Christmas as a winter dress, too. It even adds a touch of chalet romance to my flat.

I only wish the Alps were a bit higher up so that 1-2 inches could be taken off the hem. This really riles me with the Hell Bunny Christmas dress, too – even worse with that one – if you take the hem in Bambi gets its‘ legs chopped off. Lindy Bop hat three items in the Alpine collection – my dress, a twin set and a skirt.

Thought this was a perfect match – a traditional vintage scarf and brooch.

The charming little hat is by Tate Millinery and was featured in issue 13 of Vintage Flaneur by the lovely Vintagemädchen.

A vintage muff – as a hostess you normally don’t wear a handbag – but if I’d need one and it was cold outside, I’d take it along.
