One of the surprises about winter colours for many is that cherry red is one of them. I love red. Or rather many shades of red. Black is an obvious winter colour and so is grey. Also the colour scheme of my last post with the swan dress.
Winter colours – Winterfarben
Fur is also a winter classic and so is the fleece of the bag. The plaid screams wood cutter – and that makes me instantly think of a cosy fire(place).
All fur shown here is reclaimed vintage. The collar is from the 50s or 60s. The brooch is vintage from the same era. I made the fascinator from a dowdy old fur hat, probably from the 1960s.

Another year over. Miss Kittenheel as a blog is in it’s 4th year. A toddler now. I can safely say I have now more fun with it than in the first two years.
My expectations are lower – or more realistic: internet fame hasn’t knocked on my door. And to be fair I am not really running after it either. I am happy in my niche. Happy with my readers. And I have quite a few outfits queueing up in my notes for 2018 to entertain or inspire you.
Last year I decided to cut a little back on the shopping. And I did. Well, at least compared to the year before. I am not still back to pre-blogging and the January sales are not the time to start that either.
Homemade Fascinator – Selbstgemachter Fascinator
I also kept a wardrobe diary for the entire year. I used my shopping track list and wrote the dates behind when I wore which dress/ jeans/ skirt. Not down to the last sock – but a much more reliable system than the one where you turn the hanger in your closet around.
I already knew more or less which thigs I didn’t wear. But it was interesting to see what I wear most and how often I wear my favourite things.
What are my New Year’s resolutions?
Get a bit fitter. And fit again into a few dresses I didn’t wear this year. Which is not really a gargantuan goal. Only half a dress size. So, more cycling, too. Getting more sleep, definitely. Less stress. Cook more (instead of eating out).
Also, mehr Fahrradfahren. Mehr Schlaf (ohhhh yes). Weniger Stress. Wieder mehr selber kochen (anstelle was zu holen).
Spend more time with my favourite people. Actually we are working on that. Two of them, my parents, are moving to Bochum sometime in mid-summer. Same town, but to a suburb. A bit of romance would be nice, but it takes two to tango. Two of my favorite people are expecting a child. And I am quite excited about that. Life will change. It usually does. Also in die gleiche Stadt. Aber in einen Vorort. Etwas Romantik wäre nett, aber dazu gehören immer zwei. Zwei andere Menschen, an denen mir viel liegt, erwarten bald ein Kind. Und auch darauf freue ich mich. Das Leben verändert sich wieder einmal. Wie immer.
Let’s bring a little reason out into that world where fake news and hate speech run rampant. Don’t fight on every corner – but pick your fights. We just have to. If the wise always give in, the stupid will run the circus – and in the long run that is very bad for all of us. Anyway – have a very happy new year!

Theme of the French Curves Fashion Challenge in March is Candy. As in Sweets. I don’t have a lot in candy colours. And I sold that dress. But I found something in my wardrobe.
These Mules from Frollein von Sofa are called Candy. They are made of bright red velvet (february’s theme) and got lovely sparkling pink sweets on top. Anyway I adore the creativity of the Frollein. She makes striking and adorable mini hats. They are a veritable feast.
I’ll stick to my fascinators. I just like to make these mini hats. The latest one is inspred by the Frollein for the Candy challenge. Not bad for an old pillow case and a bit of stripey pink cotton.
Like I already said before I don’t own a lot of things in candy colours. The bright pink works rather well with the vibrant red. Pink (in all of its shades)and black are always a good idea. The peplum top and the pencil skirt are quite formal and a nice contrast to the playful mules.

I met Ricarda Engelsberger in June at Ladies Day – the horse racing day with a hat competition of the prestigious Krefeld jockey club. About two month later she invited me to this Workshop. Last week we finally met and it was a one on one supervision. For her not that exeptional as the event is limited to two to three participants anyway.
Ricarda Engelsberger an der Industrienähmaschine. / at the industrial sewing machine.
For Ricarda Engelsberger hat making isn’t a hobby. It is a craft she learned from the ropes, including the hard earned title of a master milliner from the german Chamber of Crafts. Sheproduces model hats and mini series since 1998. Her workshop is in Wuppertal, a historic district called Arrenberg. Here she is also active in the local community to enhance the quarter. Some of you will know Ricarda Engelsberger or her creations from the German magazineVintage Flaneur.
If in Wuppertal… quite cool to take thesuspension railwayagain. Fun fact: we realised that Ricarda and I were neighbours for about 3 years back in the 1990s in another part of town. We lived door to door. The world truly is a small place!
Ricardas Atelier ist klein aber fein. Alles drin was man braucht. Ricarda’s work space is small but neat. Everything to work properly. Well sorted and still with a loving touch to details.
Kleine Demonstration – der Hutweiter aus den 50gern. Die Heizspirale blieb dafür aus. The audio is crap on this one – basically it is a hat stratcher from the 50s. The hot spiral isn’t switched on.
We first spruced up a hat I bought at Oma Klara. Sadly the hat was folded for shipping. Not a way to treat a hat that was kept for good for a lifetime. Ricarda managed to make it shine again and fluffed up the flowers that were flatter as pancakes.
Enough faffing around – you want to know what we did at the workshop.
Also als erstes haben wir uns mal meine Vorlage angeschaut und ich habe Ricarda erklärt was damit prinzipiell passieren soll. First we had a look at my old hat and I explained what I’d like to turn it into.
Ausgangsmodell: biederer Trachtenhut. Bei eBay wegen der Federn erworben. Zu klein. Before: traditional German „country“ hat. Bought on eBay because of the feather pad. Too small to fit my head.
Vision: 1950ger inspirierter Half-Hat oder Cocktailhut im Jagd-Look. Erhalt und Weitervervendung der Original-Garnitur. After: 1950s inspired bandeaux or half hat in a hunting style using the original trimmings
Arbeitsschritte / Steps taken:
Vermessung des Hutes und der Vorlage (oben in der Collage: Leo-Hut mit Rippen) measuring the hat and the model (the leo one with the brown ribs in the collage above)
Erklärung wie ein Half-Hat funktioniert, bzw. konstruiert wird und Überlegung aus wievielen Teilen das Endprodukt betehen soll explanation how to make a half hat and its construction and design approach how many parts the final product will have
Vorlage abschmücken, Ripsbänder abtrennen dismanteling the old hat
Skizzieren der Bestandteile mit Schneiderkreide chalking the parts on the old hat
Ausschneiden und Glattbügeln der Einzelteile der Filzgrundlage cutting and ironing the parts from the felt base
Garniturtest (und Mittagspause) mocking up the decoration and lunchbreak
Zusammenstecken und Vernähen der Filzgrundlage (Ricarda hat den Teil an der Industrienähmaschine übernommen – ich hatte an dem Tag etwas zuviel Schiss davor) pegging and sewing together the felt base (Ricarda took over at the industrial sewing machine – I chickened out on that day)
We made the shape a bit slimmer. Pictured is the final product.
Aufbringen der Garnitur und des alten Etiketts. Alles von Hand. bringing on the trimmings and feathers as well as the old label, All by hand.
Tadaaaaaa! Fertig Job done!
Kaum wiederzuerkennen! Hardly recognizable! On the model. Die feather pad is kept close to the base and arch a little into the forehead. I usually wear discreet earrings, so there will be no conflict with the overhanging trimming.
Und jetzt angezogen! Ein Traum. Ricarda und ich waren sehr begeistert. And now worn. Fits like a dream. Ricarda and I were very excited about the result.

It’s another second Sunday of the month. Time forDIY your Closet. Soon the Oktoberfest in Munich (and various other places) starts again. Since I love a bit of kitsch, I added a new fascinator to my lot and a new post to my Oktoberfest Craze series.
When my Hell Bunny Hermeline skirt got shortened there was a little bit of material left to make another fascinator for me. Well, not only for me but also for the charming Vintagemädchen. Since I am currently rather contagious she’ll have to wait a little for hers though.I like to mak emy fascinators on longer train rides. Keeps you busy and you can’t go anywhere anyway. vom der gekauften Filzunterlage bis zum fertigen Fascinator from the pre-made felt base to the finished fascinator
Unfortunately I managed to get myself a whooping cough. My pertussis was unrecognized due to being in the wrong location and a substitution to my regular doctor. Long story short – vaccination would have helped. So do the smart thing and get it. Am slowly – very slowly on the mend and ok-ish – as long as don’t do anything.

It’s another second Sunday of the month. Today isn’t only mother’s day in Germany but also the day for DIY your Closet. It’s about making your own things or in my case to upcylce or customise. I made another fascinator in April but today I chose a shirt from the current Sheego collection.
That bit is important for me – make your clothes fit you. Most times I take my things to the seamstress for that. I get extra buttons, most of my dresses, pants or skirts are shortened, taken in at the waist or even get pockets, with some blazers sleeves were shortened. I am a regular customer. I am pretty conservative in my own way when it comes to clothing – it has to flatter, bring out my advantages. I don’t really care about trends.
Mit wesentlich vergrössertem Ausschnitt.
Much wider neckline.
The shirt is a bit more casual for me than you are used to. I liked it when I first saw it in January at the Curvy in Berlin. I think it is perfect for a day at the beach or a stroll over the market. I’d even wear it to go sailing without feeling to naff. The tote was a little extra from Dolly and Dotty with my featured tartan dress and I love it to bits. It is a favourite when I go shopping and the red is always ace with a maritime look. You’ll find out in a good week why I consider this quite funny!
Mit abgerundetem Saum und kürzeren Ärmeln. The hem is rounded and the sleeves are shorter.
they spakle like hell!
Anyway – time to go to the last football match of the season. I’ll stick to the blue-white but with a polkadot dress. Fortunately with the lovely sunny summer weather without three layers of clothing above and below. Maybe even with my light blue petticoat that usually stays at home.

I probably grew up watching the wrong films. I grew up in the casual 70s but on 1950s films. The ones I remember and enjoyed the most were films with Doris day or Marilyn Monroe. Always dressed to the nines and a new outfit in every new scene, or at least that’s the way it felt. And the ladies wore hats. Half hats, cocktail hats, turbans, toques, pillboxes, bandeau or headband hats, berets or other headpieces. We’d probably label some today as fascinators. That set my standards.
Not only did these films set the spark first to collect hats but secondly to make my own fascinators. These a the ones I made for me in 2015. I prefer to use sinamay bases which I cover in fabric. So far I don’t decorate them with lots of things.
I love the furry ones. They are reclaimed fur from vintage 1950s or 60s caps or hats – too small, too dowdy and they get a new, a second life as a flirty fascinator. One of the very few (sustainable) ways to wear real fur.
The feathers hackles are vintage too. I got them for silly money on my favourite flea market. As much as I like the grey one, I wonder if the colour contrast with the backside of the tweed in combination with the feathers is too much. The tartan is from a former colleague of mine. Nice quality and vintage material but cut into triangles.
The grey one is my Christmas fascinator. Not too much over the top and only a bit of kitsch. But paired with my Bernie Dexter Winterwonderland dress it is. But in a good way. The colours are neutral and got along well with most of my Christmas outfits. I have worn it quite a bit before and around Christmas. At least six times and I wasn’t that social this year as I had my gall bladder removed at the beginning of December. The sparkling one is the fascinator I wore for New Years Eve. It was a top from H&M, not only a tad small at the arms and neck but also itchy as hell for moi.
The green velvet one was made for this Hell Bunny skirt and because I fell in love with the little toadstools. Usually I assemble the fascinators loosely and take a pic of them. Helps me to remember what I want to combine. Helps me also to to assess if they become an asset to my wardrobe or not. In the end I decided against the bow and went for a kitsch little souvenir brooch from the 50s.
The first ones I made last year were the two cherry ones. Both are made out of the material left over from the shortened hem of my cherry dress. Most of my dresses get altered and sometimes there is enough fabric left to do seomthing with it.
