Okotberfest Craze: Tartan meets Dirndl

So you’d like to go to Oktoberfest but a classic Dirndl is too expensive and the cheap ones too much like a Halloween costume? There are ways to create that look without the full commitment. Either in a cheerful or with a darker note. Another easy way to do it is pick a dress and wear it with an apron. Like Gemma from Retrochick last year in Munich.
Was tun wenn ein Oktoberfest-Besuch ansteht und ein klassisches Dirndl zu teuer ist aber die preiswerten zu sehr nach Karneval aussehen? Es gibt Wege diesen Look zu erzielen ohne direkt aufs Ganze zu gehen. Egal ob in heller oder dunkler. Ein anderer Ansatz ist es ein passendes Kleid auszusuchen und das mit einer Schürze zu tragen. Wie Gemma von Retrochick das letztes Jahr in München gezeigt hat.

Although quite often in the past (and not just the 1950s) women also wore scarfs as aprons. And that is what I did for this outfit. A pretty tartan dress from Hell Bunny with a sweet heart neckline. Combined with a modern oblong scarf, not a square in a traditional folklore pattern.
In der Vergangenheit (und damit meine ich nicht unbedingt die 50ger Jahre) haben Frauen Tücher auch als Schürzen getragen. Und das habe ich mit diesem Outfit getan. Das Tartan-Kleid mit seinem Herzausschnitt ist von HellBunny. Kombiniert habe ich es mit einem Schal in einem klassischen Folkloremuster und nicht mit einem traditionellem, quadratischen Tuch.

The flower wreath or headband emphazises the traditional look. Make sure you get a nice one. Like the one I got from Tate Milinery. The garish ones will remind a lot of people of the ceremonial driving down of cattle from the mountain pastures into the valley in autumn. And you don’t want that. Or maybe you do?
Der Blütenkranz oder vielmehr das Haarband mit Blumenschmuck unterstützt den Trachtenlook. Holt euch etwas wertiges. Wie mein Kranz von Tate Milinery. Die lauten und allzu bunten werden viele Leute an den Almabtrieb erinnern. Und das wollen die wenigsten von uns. Oder vielleicht doch?

Oktoberfest Craze: Dirndl-Love in Venice

O’zapft is! Meine Liebe zu Dirndl und Trachten ist nicht gerade neu. Angefangen hat mein persönliches Revival als ich in England gelebt habe. Auch wenn das Dirndl, das wir so kennen und mögen eigentlich erst in den 1930ger Jahren neu erfunden wurde. Aber richtig traditionell ist nur bedingt meins. Der Look mit den üblichen Rüschenblusen mit Puffärmeln ist mir meist zu viel. Zumindest an mir.
O’zapft is! These are the traditional words that open the Munich Oktoberfest. My infatuation for dirndl and traditional clothing isn’t a new thing. Actually my personal revival started when I still lived in England. Even though the dirndl is a reinvented folkloristic uptake from the 1930s. (Sorry, the easily linkable literature I found is in German). But really traditional isn’t mine anyway. I prefer a look without the ruffled blouses with pouf sleeves.

Auch wenn es mittlerweile recht nette Dirndl unter 150 EUR gibt, ist ein gutes Dirndl kein preiswerter Spass. Viele Gelegenheiten eines zu tragen haben (oder schaffen sich) viele von uns nicht. Deswegen ein weiteres Dirndl Marke Eigenbau. Traditionell ist nur das Samtmieder.
Even if you can get quite nice Dirndls now for unter 150 EUR, good ones don’t come cheap. A lot of us lack the occasions or they don’t create those opportunities to wear one. So here is another self styled dirndl. The only traditional clothing is the velvet corsage.

Das hier ist eine fröhlichere Variante zu der dunklen Version mit meinem Trachtenmieder. Rock und Bluse gehören, wie auch in der anderen Variante, zu den Dingen, die ich im Alltag trage. Die Tasche der Wahl ist eine Clutch aus Raffia.
This is variaton to the dark drindl look with my traditionally styled corsage. Skirt and blouse are part of the things I wear most days. The bag of choice is a raffia clutch.

Der ganze Look hat für mich einen Hauch Rokoko. Der Rock ist von LindyBop mit einem Bordürendruck. Das Thema ist Venedig.

Wieder mal ein „Novelty-Print“ – diesmal mit dem Canale Grande in Venedig.

Die Kette ist Vintage. Die Blumen passen gut zu Trachten und Stickereien.
The necklace is vintage. The flowers remind me of traditional clothing and embroidery.

Die kleine Millefiori-Brosche hingegen bezieht sich auf den Druck des Rockes und passt aber auch gut zum Folklorethema.
The small millefiori brooch is a nod to the venice theme in skirt. But it also as an ethnic or folk vibe.

Das wunderbare Stohhütchen ist von Fräulein von Sofa. Es erinnert mich an reizende Meissner Porzellanschäferinnen. Was wieder an das Rokoko-Motiv anknüpft.
The wonderful little boater is from Fräulein von Sofa. It reminds me of something a Meissen procellain shepherdess would wear. So we got the rokoko motive again.

„In der »Mittelstelle Deutsche Tracht« der Reichsfrauenorganisation entwarf die »Reichsbeauftragte für Trachtenarbeit«, Gertrud Pesendorfer, in den 30er-Jahren das neue germanische Kleid. Dabei orientierte sie sich mitnichten an den regional höchst unterschiedlichen heiligen Festtagstrachten. Die bestanden nicht selten aus mehreren Röcken, meterlangen schweren Stoffen und steifen, teilweise unförmigen, stets hochgeschlossenen Miedern, in denen der weibliche Körper wie in einer Urne steckte. Dazu wurde mitunter ein überdimensionaler Kopfputz getragen.
Stilbildend wurde stattdessen eine reduzierte Tracht, die Pesendorfer aus dem Arbeitskleid entwickelte. Nach der Maxime »weniger ist mehr« »entkatholisierte« und sexualisierte sie ihr Modell. French Curves: Team Playsuit

Le thème French Curves en septembre c’est le combi vs la salopette. Gnaaaahhh. La seule salopette que j’ai et moi sommes pas des amis. Et j’ai déjà montré mes combis pour l’été en août. Mais j’ai oublié quelque chose. J’ai un autre combi. Un peu oublié.
The French Curves‘ theme for sepemter is the playsuit vs the jumpsuit. The only jumpsuit I own and I are not exactly friends. And I already showed my summer playsuits in August. But I forgot something. I have another playsuit. A forgotten one.

Vendu chez ASOS pour la soirée dans les soldes d’été en 2015. J’ai la porte seulement comme pyjama. Les matériaux sont en vraie vie trop t-shirt pour mon goût pour dehors. Especiallement les shorts.
Sold at ASOS Curve in the summer sales of 2015 for a night out. So far I only wore this as a pyjama. The materials are a bit too t-shirty for my taste for outside. Especially the shorts.

Pour la challenge mon objectif était de créer une tenue qui est aussi moi avec ce que j’ai. Avec la blouse de Hell Bunny c’est plus habillé. J’adore le mix du chiffonsemi-transparent avec le boucle propre. La blouse a c’est classique secrétaire chic. Le ceinture montre ma taille qui est un peu perdu dans le Combi. Le sac à main et les talons sont très boho.
For the challenge my objective was to create an outfit with things already in my closet that is also me. With the Hell Bunny blouse it feels more dressy. I love the mix of the semi-transparent chiffon with the proper bow. The blouse has the classic secretary chic. The belt shows off my waist which is a bit lost in this play suit. The fake mongolian fur handbag and the heels are quite boho.

Golden Forest – Mein Herbstkleid

This dress is a golden riot. I love the kitschy autumn or fall forest print. So pretty you’d love to step into the print right away. I’ll wear this dress probably to death until mid or late November. Because let’s face it – it is a seasonal dress and it waited since January in my closet to get worn.
Dieses Kleid ist ein Traum in Gold und Kupfer. Ich liebe diesen kitschigen Druck eines goldenen Herbstwaldes. So schön, das man am liebsten direkt dort hinein möchte. Wahrscheinlich werde ich bis Mitte/ Ende November ständig dieses Kleid anziehen. Denn, Hand aufs Herz – es ist Jahreszeitlich sehr gebunden und ich freue mich seit Januar darauf es anzuziehen.

It is the very idea of my favourite season. Autumn when nature goes out with a bang in a golden splendour. Soon the mornings will be crips. The days get shorter. I love kicking leaves – but I won’t mind if I have to wait a few more weeks to do that.
Es ist das Klischee meiner liebsten Jahreszeit. Im Herbst wenn die Natur sich mit einem Paukenschlag verabschiedet. Landschaften in Gold, Gelb, Orange und Kupfer. Bald werden die Morgen wieder frisch. Die Tage werden kürzer. Ich liebe es durch die gefallenen Blätter zu stapfen – aber das kann gerne noch ein paar Wochen warten.

The dress is from Retrolicious – like my cat dress with frames and my black- and white newspaper cat dress. Their speciality are (who would have thought) crazy or novelty prints. And the prints are stunning though the dresses themselves are rather simply made. Bought at Modcloth the „“Sights to Season“ dress lacks pockets. Bugger! Guess that’ll get changed soon though.
Das Kleid ist von Retrolicious – wie mein Katzenkleid mit den Bilderrahmen und auch mein Katzenkleid mit dem schwarz-weissen Zeitungsmuster. Die Muster sind sehr spektakulär auch wenn die Kleider selber recht einfach gemacht sind. Gekauft bei Modcloth ist das einzige was diesem Kleid wirklich fehlt Taschen. Aber das lässt sich arrangieren.

DIY your Closet goes Oktoberfest Craze – Hell Bunny Fascinator

Es ist wieder einmal der zweite Sonntag im Monat und damit auch wieder Zeit für DIY your Closet. Da bald in München (und an allen möglichen andern Orten) das Oktoberfest wieder losgeht, habe ich meine eigene „Okotberfest Craze“ Reihe um einen selbstgemachten Fascinator ergänzt.
It’s another second Sunday of the month. Time for DIY your Closet. Soon the Oktoberfest in Munich (and various other places) starts again. Since I love a bit of kitsch, I added a new fascinator to my lot and a new post to my Oktoberfest Craze series.

Beim Kürzen meines Hell Bunny Hermeline Rocks ist genug Stoff übrig geblieben um mir einen Fascinator zu machen. Eigentlich genug um noch einen zweiten für das liebe Vintagemädchen zu machen – aber im Moment bin ich noch hoch ansteckend und lasse da lieber meine Finger von. Wobei die Finger nicht wirklich das Problem sind. Ich mache meine Fascinator gerne bei längeren Zugfahrten. Da hat man was sinnvolles zu tun und kommt nicht weg.
When my Hell Bunny Hermeline skirt got shortened there was a little bit of material left to make another fascinator for me. Well, not only for me but also for the charming Vintagemädchen. Since I am currently rather contagious she’ll have to wait a little for hers though.I like to mak emy fascinators on longer train rides. Keeps you busy and you can’t go anywhere anyway.

Anyway – ich habe mir unglücklicherweise einen Keuchhusten gefangen. Der wurde auch erst nach vier Wochen als solcher erkannt. Das war eine bedauerliche Verkettung von am falschen Ort und zweimal Vertretungsarzt. Also – lasst Euch impfen, denn das ist gerade äusserst unerfreulich. Langsam, sehr langsam geht es wieder etwas besser – solange ich nichts mache.
Unfortunately I managed to get myself a whooping cough. My pertussis was unrecognized due to being in the wrong location and a substitution to my regular doctor. Long story short – vaccination would have helped. So do the smart thing and get it. Am slowly – very slowly on the mend and ok-ish – as long as don’t do anything.

French Curves: Maxi in the Mud

L’été et les vacances c’est aussi la saison du festival. Chaque été au début des grandes vacances il y a un festival dansma part de du centre-ville. Bochum Total. Avec cinq scènes. En général ça pluie au minimum un jour. Beaucoup des choses en été on s’imagine que le soleil brille. Mais pas toujours.
Summer and holidays are also festival time. At the beginning of the school holidays I even live in one. Or at the fringes of it in my part of the city centre. Bochum total. With five stages. As a rule it usually rains on one of the days. With most thing in summer we pretend the sun will shine and we are getting our brains fried. Well, doesn’t always happen.

Quand ma harpiste préférée, Nadia Birkenstock, a un gig sur le festival de Felsenmeer j’étais froide. Heureusement ça pas pleurait. Comme „roadie“ je m’habille très sensible. Jeans et T-Shirt.
While my favorite harpist, Nadia Birkenstock, was on the stage at the Felsenmeer-Festival I was cold. Fortunately it didn’t rain (drizzled a bit at a time though). Playing roadie for the day I even dressed sensible. Jeans and T-Shirt.

La robe que je porte est la seule de maxi. En général je la porte à la maison. Le maxi c’est pour moi aussi un look des festivals. Et festivals et le margouillis – une combinaison classique. Peut-être j’ai vite trop longue en Angleterre. Quand nous avons pris les photos c’était un jour triste et humide. Ici l’aout n’est pas la garantie pour chaleur mais dans les derniers ans pour beaucoup de pluie.
The dress I wear is my only maxi dress. Usually I wear it at home. Maxi dresses are for me also something for summer but although rather unpractical something I’d wear to a festival. At least a folk one. Festivals and mud however that is a classic combination – but perhaps I lived to long in England. When we took the pics it was a miserable grey and humid da. Somehow here august isn’t that blazing sunhine and heat but we do get a lot of rain instead.

J’aime bien des ballerines mais même plus les bottes. C’est ma première paire des bottes de pluie depuis vingt ans. Grace a JJ Fotwear. Ils sont disponibles en trois manches. J’ai le 2xl. Et c’est vraiment grand. Presque un peu trop de place. Bon qualité et lourd. Il y a des desseins différents – le tartan, les points et pour moi legarou. Rrrrrrrr. Ça va bien avec des plumes-de-paon, n’est-ce pas?
I love my ballerinas but I actually prefer the boots. These are my first wellies in 20 years! Thanks to JJ Footwear. You can get them in three calf widths. I am wearing 2xl. They are big. A bit too big even. Nice quality and heavy. There are different designs like tartan, polka dots and it had to be the animal print for me. Rrrrrrr. I think it goes rather well with the peacock feathers, doesn’t it?

Ü30-Blogparade Black & White

This is the ü30 blogparade „black and white“ entry with the retro touch. Black and white always, always reminds me of the silver screen. Vintage Vamps and pin ups. Humphrey bogart, Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire, a lanky Jimmy Steward. It’s dancers, detectives and dames. Mystery and suspense. Double entendres and frivolous fun. And I try to make it all work in a single outfit. I fail epically at the detective bit though.
Das ist der Beitrag der ü30 Challenge mit dem Retro-Touch. Schwarz-weiß erinnert mich immer an alte Filme. An Stars und Sternchen. An Humphrey Bogart, Ginger Rogers und Fred Astaire, den schlaksigen Jimmy Stewart. Das sind Revuegirls, Detektive und Damen mit wesentlich mehr Problemen, als es zunächst scheint. Filme voller Doppeldeutigkeiten und harmlosem Spaß, aber auch Spannung und Verschwörungen.

The suit is from the English retro and rockabilly label Dolly and Dotty who asked me if I’d like to show another outfit on my blog. In January I made a post with a red tartan dress and some traditional German clothing – the sound of music goes highland fling.
Das Kostüm ist von Dolly and Dotty. Das englische Rockabilly- und Retrolabel hatte mich gefragt, ob ich noch ein weiteres Outfit von Ihnen auf meinem Blog zeigen will. Im Januar habe ich bereits mit ihnen für ein Trachtenoutfit mit Vintagetouch kooperiert – Schottenkaro trifft auf Wolljanker.

The Alice jacket has 3/4 length sleeves. The dogtooth buttons are a super cute detail. It is longer in the front than the back, the tiniest bit too short for my seriously generous chest. It fits still perfectly. Yes, it’ll get lots of mileage with my wiggle dresses an pencil skirts.
Das Alice-Jäckchen hat 3/4 Ärmel. Die Knöpfe sind in Hahnentritt gehalten – ein schönes Detail. Insgesamt ist die Jacke vorne einen Hauch zu kurz für meine sehr grosse Oberweite. Es passt aber immer noch fast perfekt und wir befinden uns am Anfang einer langen Freundschaft. Besonders gut lässt sich die Jacke mit Etuikleidern und Bleistiftröcken kombinieren.

Talking about pencil skirts. Falda is one of the few items (as well the jacket) that didn’t really need to be altered. The length was perfect and for once it feels really high waisted. I had it nipped in at the hem for about an inch on each side. To make it extra wiggly.
Apropos Bleistiftröcke – Falda, der Rock, ist wie die Jacke eines der wenigen Dinge die prinzipiell nicht in die Änderung gemusst hätten. Die Rock- oder Saumlänge ist für mich optimal. Die hohe Taille ist gut ausgearbeitet. Trotzdem habe ich unten an den Seiten noch knapp 2-3cm wegnehmen lassen. Um die Silhouette noch zu verstärken.

Both jacket and skirt are well made. I like the material of both. The skirt seems a bit deerer materialwise. Even the lining has a very nice feel to it.
Jacke und Rock sind beide gut gemacht. Die Stoffe von beiden Teilen gefallen mir. Der Rock sieht etwas hochpreisiger aus. Auch das Futter fühlt sich gut an, das kommt auch nicht immer vor.

I admired that hat (or fascinator) for a very long time from afar on Sadie Walker in her stunning and colourful 1950s style. It is a bit larger than my usual fascinators. If you wonder if you should get it, do it. It’s worth to get on that waiting list. It packs very flat. An excellent choice for travelling and it adds instant glamour.
Den Hut habe ich ganz, ganz lange aus der Ferne an Sadie Walker mit ihrem flamboyanten 1950er Jahre-Stil bewundert. Jetzt wohnt er auch bei mir. Solltet ihr Euch fragen ob der bei Euch einziehen darf – kauft ihn. Er lässt sich super flach in die einpacken. Perfekt für unterwegs auf Reisen für ein wenig Instant-Glamour.

Bitte vormerken: am Samstag, den 11.Juni 2016, findet auf der Krefelder Rennbahn im Rahmen der Ladies Day statt. Der Ladies Day ist inspiriert von den englischen Pferderennen und somit eine großartige Gelegenheit, ein schickes Outfit in Kombination mit einem Hut oder Hütchen auszuführen.
Please save the date: Saturday, June 11th, 2016 is Ladies Day at the racecourse in Krefeld. Like the well known Ladies Days in the UK it is a great opportunity to dress up a little and wear a hat or fascinator.

Ich dachte mir es ist eine grossartige Sache das mit einen Vintage-Treffen zu kombinieren. Manchmal muss man nur einfach fragen (und dann machen) – also in Kooperation mit dem Krefelder Rennclub gibt es dieses Jahr die erste Vintage Corner. Wir füllen noch den Event mit etwas Leben, aber fest steht ihr werdet auch vor Ort noch den ein oder anderen wunderschönen Hut kaufen können!
Thought it would be a great thing to combine that with a Vintage meeting. Sometimes all you got to do ist ask (and then make it happen) – so in Kooperation with the Krefelder Rennclub there will be a first Vintage Corner this year. We are still filling this with life but you’ll have the chance to buy some more beautiful hats!

Letztes Jahr war es Anfang Mai nicht nur plötzlich noch einmal richtig kalt, sonder auch noch nass. Aber für dieses Jahr haben wir besseres Wetter bestellt und es ist immerhin fast Mitte Juni!
Last year we had a cold spell in May and to top it up it was a rainy day too. But we ordered better weather this year – and its almost mid june!

MyStory – Tweed and Blue!

The football season is coming to a close and though VfL Bochum will not change into the German premier league, we are on a nice 4th place. And much, much more fun to watch than last season before the new coach. It started to get a little warmer for the last games – but it wasn’t around Easter – when the pics were taken. So yes, minus this pale blue coat I wear things like this to the game (different shoes though) or stuff like this or this in Summer. I love the retro vibe of the scarf I bought this season.

Die Spielsaison nähert sich dem Ende und auch wenn der VfL Bochum nicht in die erste Bundesliga wechselt sind wir auf einem schönen vierten Platz. Und es macht seit dem Trainerwechsel letzte Saison endlich Spass ihnen beim Spiel zuzusehen. Es wird auch endlich wärmer – auch wenn die Bilder zu Ostern aufgenommen wurden und da war es noch recht frisch. So – das trage ich tatsächlich zum Spiel (also mit anderen Schuhen) und gerne auch mit diesem Mantel. Wenn es wärmer wird dann wieder sowas hier oder auch das. Ich liebe den Retrolook meines Fan-Schals!

Last summer I quite fell in love with the blogger collection by Studio Untold. So many great things. The tweed pants instantly interested me. I knew when I saw these trousers that they were itchy – and they are. Truly. Ok, I am a proper pincess on the pea with tings like that. Anyway – a bit more lining would have been excellent. They were part of Lisa Mosh’s Blogger Outfit. What do you think?

Letzten Sommer habe ich mich ziemlich in die Blogger Kollektion von Studio Untold verguckt. Die Tweed-Hose hat mich auch mitten im Hochsommer sofort in den Bann geschlagen. Ok, mir war sofort klar, noch bevor ich sie anfasste, die würde ich als kratzig empfinden (denn dabei bin ich leider mega-empfindlich). Etwas mehr Fütterung wäre schön gewesen. Sie gehörten zu Lisa Moshs Blogger-Outfit. Gefalle ich Euch?

Mein Januar and „Workwear“

So this was my January in outfits. Any favourites?
Das war meine Outfits im Januar. Welches gefällt Euch am besten?

Well, there is another January outfit – a „workwear“ one – the workwear is in quotes. It is something I might wear to a meeting as a landscape architect – though there without the glittering heels. This outfit was for my second life – the one as a local politician with a mandate in council. I wore it to my last session. The heels add a little glamour.

Though council meetings are not without drama – especially when talking about lots of money, which is the case when the annual city budget is first debated and then voted upon. Though something actually sparkling adds a little fun.

The entire process however is a bit like the German New Year’s Eve favourite „Dinner for One“ – the same procedure as every year. The coalition approved the budget that again feels not quite sufficent. Once more no budget-freeze from regional administration as we meet our set targets. „Surprisingly“ amendments will be once more have to be made over the year. Unlike that very popular TV classic, there is no tiger rug involved. No actual tripping and stumbling. Next January the next budget requires approval.

This is outfit number one for this month’s theme of Modejahr2016 – a themed Fashion year: business looks. Look number two will be casual work wear.

The cape will soon show up here again – I just hope it’ll turn out as pretty as I wish.
Das Cape werde ich hoffentlich bald wieder zeigen – ich hoffe es wird so schön, wie ich mir das wünsche.

Nun denn – dies ist noch ein Januar Look – ein „Arbeitsoutfit“. Nur in Gänsefüßchen? Das ist etwas das ich zwar auch so in meinem Job als Landschaftsarchitektin tragen würde – abgesehen von den Absatzschuhen. Hier ist es für mein zweites Leben – das als Kommunalpolitikerin mit einem Sitz im Stadtrat. Mein Outfit für die letzte Ratssitzung. Die Plateau-Heels machen es etwas weniger bieder und sorgen für etwas Glamour.

Auch wenn Ratssitzungen nicht ganz ohne eigene Dramatik sind, besonders wenn es um viel Geld geht, wie bei den jährlichen Reden zum Haushalt und dessen spätere Verabschiedung. Etwas das tatsächlich glitzert bringt etwas Freude in ein Meer aus Vorhersehbarkeiten.

Ein wenig erinnert das Ganze an den beliebten TV-Klassiker „Dinner for One“ – the same procedure as every year. Die Koalition stimmte erneut für einen Haushalt, der gefühlt zu knapp bemessen ist. Einmal mehr keine Haushaltssperre durch die Bezirksregierung. Völlig „überraschend“ werden dann im Laufe des Jahres Nachbesserungen anstehen. Im Gegensatz zum 90ten Geburtstag, dem deutschen Titel von „Dinner for One“ gibt es kein Tigerfell, kein reales Stolpern oder Straucheln. Nächsten Januar muss der nächste Haushalt beschlossen werden.

Dieses Outfit ist das erste von zwei Business Looks des Modejahrs2016. Das zweite Outfit wird ein weniger formal sein.
