Two weeks ago I lost my heart to a small island in the North Sea. Wide beaches. Wonderful climate. A bit lost in time. Borkum ist the most Western of the German Frisian islands. And the largest.
Vor zwei Wochen habe ich mich verliebt – in eine kleine Insel in der Nordsee. Weite Strände. Hochseeklima. Etwas in der Zeit stehen geblieben. Borkum ist die westlichste und grösste der Friesischen Inseln in Deutschland.

Autumn by the sea can be full of crisp air and sunshine. It can also be a miserable wet windswept affair. The parents and I were very lucky. The salty pure air balm for what remains from my whooping cough.
Der Herbst an der See kann so schön sein mit einer steifen Briese, blauem Himmel und Sonnenschein. Verregnet und windig geht auch. Meine Eltern und ich hatten Glück. Die gute Luft war eine Wohltat für meinen abklingenden Keuchhusten.

I was still was weak as a kitten. So one of the things we did was take a bus tour over the tiny island. Great fun. Thanks to the dry wit of the bus driver. And what a bus! Built in 1951 by Mercedes. The year my mum was born. Shiny red and black from the outside. Inside upholstered with a brownish herringbone tweed. Like a lovely hunting jacket. Softly sprung seats. What a beauty.
Ich war immer noch total schwach auf den Beinen. Deswegen haben wir dann auch die Inselrundfahrt gemacht. Das war spassig. Das lag aber auch am trockenen Humor unseres Busfahrers. Ohhh – und was für ein toller Bus. Der Nostalgiebus ist ein Mercedes von 1951. Dem Geburtsjahr meiner Mutter. Glänzendes Rot und Schwarz von aussen. Innen gepolstert mit einem braunbeigen Fischgrät-Tweed. Wie englisches Jackett. Weich gefederte Sitze. Vintage bus deserved a vintage look – and I usually dress that way anyway. A rare sight on the island. Matching the bus and the maritime surrounding I decided to go for my fair-isle sweater with a wiggle tartan skirt. The little suitcase used to be a beauty case. I think it makes a nice handbag for seminars too. Fits filing folders, too.
Der Oldtimer-Bus hat sich natürlich auch ein passendes Outfit verdient. Für mich ist mein Retro-Look normal. Auf der Insel war es etwas ungewohnt. Passend zum Bus und dem maritimen Umfeld habe ich mich für meinen Bleistiftrock im hellen Schottenkaro entschieden. Der kleine Koffer ist ein Beauty Case aus den 60gern. Finde den auch toll für Seminare. DIN A4 geht auch rein.

Oktoberfest Craze: Dirndl-Love in Venice

O’zapft is! Meine Liebe zu Dirndl und Trachten ist nicht gerade neu. Angefangen hat mein persönliches Revival als ich in England gelebt habe. Auch wenn das Dirndl, das wir so kennen und mögen eigentlich erst in den 1930ger Jahren neu erfunden wurde. Aber richtig traditionell ist nur bedingt meins. Der Look mit den üblichen Rüschenblusen mit Puffärmeln ist mir meist zu viel. Zumindest an mir.
O’zapft is! These are the traditional words that open the Munich Oktoberfest. My infatuation for dirndl and traditional clothing isn’t a new thing. Actually my personal revival started when I still lived in England. Even though the dirndl is a reinvented folkloristic uptake from the 1930s. (Sorry, the easily linkable literature I found is in German). But really traditional isn’t mine anyway. I prefer a look without the ruffled blouses with pouf sleeves.

Auch wenn es mittlerweile recht nette Dirndl unter 150 EUR gibt, ist ein gutes Dirndl kein preiswerter Spass. Viele Gelegenheiten eines zu tragen haben (oder schaffen sich) viele von uns nicht. Deswegen ein weiteres Dirndl Marke Eigenbau. Traditionell ist nur das Samtmieder.
Even if you can get quite nice Dirndls now for unter 150 EUR, good ones don’t come cheap. A lot of us lack the occasions or they don’t create those opportunities to wear one. So here is another self styled dirndl. The only traditional clothing is the velvet corsage.

Das hier ist eine fröhlichere Variante zu der dunklen Version mit meinem Trachtenmieder. Rock und Bluse gehören, wie auch in der anderen Variante, zu den Dingen, die ich im Alltag trage. Die Tasche der Wahl ist eine Clutch aus Raffia.
This is variaton to the dark drindl look with my traditionally styled corsage. Skirt and blouse are part of the things I wear most days. The bag of choice is a raffia clutch.

Der ganze Look hat für mich einen Hauch Rokoko. Der Rock ist von LindyBop mit einem Bordürendruck. Das Thema ist Venedig.
The entire look has for me a certain rokoko flair. The skirt is from LindyBop. The lovely border print features Venice.

Wieder mal ein „Novelty-Print“ – diesmal mit dem Canale Grande in Venedig.

Die Kette ist Vintage. Die Blumen passen gut zu Trachten und Stickereien.
The necklace is vintage. The flowers remind me of traditional clothing and embroidery.

Die kleine Millefiori-Brosche hingegen bezieht sich auf den Druck des Rockes und passt aber auch gut zum Folklorethema.
The small millefiori brooch is a nod to the venice theme in skirt. But it also as an ethnic or folk vibe.

Das wunderbare Stohhütchen ist von Fräulein von Sofa. Es erinnert mich an reizende Meissner Porzellanschäferinnen. Was wieder an das Rokoko-Motiv anknüpft.
The wonderful little boater is from Fräulein von Sofa. It reminds me of something a Meissen procellain shepherdess would wear. So we got the rokoko motive again.

„In der »Mittelstelle Deutsche Tracht« der Reichsfrauenorganisation entwarf die »Reichsbeauftragte für Trachtenarbeit«, Gertrud Pesendorfer, in den 30er-Jahren das neue germanische Kleid. Dabei orientierte sie sich mitnichten an den regional höchst unterschiedlichen heiligen Festtagstrachten. Die bestanden nicht selten aus mehreren Röcken, meterlangen schweren Stoffen und steifen, teilweise unförmigen, stets hochgeschlossenen Miedern, in denen der weibliche Körper wie in einer Urne steckte. Dazu wurde mitunter ein überdimensionaler Kopfputz getragen.
Stilbildend wurde stattdessen eine reduzierte Tracht, die Pesendorfer aus dem Arbeitskleid entwickelte. Nach der Maxime »weniger ist mehr« »entkatholisierte« und sexualisierte sie ihr Modell. Das Ergebnis: ein kragenloses, dafür tief dekolletiertes Dirndl mit hoher Taille, geschnürtem oder geknüpftem engen Mieder, welches für stramme Haltung sorgte, und einem kurzärmeligen weißen Blüschen, das die nackten Oberarme sehen ließ.“

Für mich ganz klar das hier – das Kimonokleid von Anna Scholz.
What is your piece of clothing for a variety of situations and do you feel appropriatly dressed with it? Ines Meyrose with her (German) fashion year challenge asked that question in the 30plus-forum. Show us that one piece of clothing for almost every occasion. More or less from a gallery opening to buying vegetables. For me the answer was clar – it is the kimono dress from Anna Scholz.

Auf der Curvy ist Sexy im Januar letzen Jahres hat Elli von Curvy Fashionelli dieses Bild gepostet und ich war schockverliebt in das Kleid aus der Sheego Frühjahr/ Sommer Kollektion von 2015.
Last year in January Elli from Curvy Fashionelli posted this picture and I was smitten in that new dress from Sheego’s spring/ summer collection of 2015.

Einige Wochen später war das Kleid verfügbar und seit dem haben wir einiges erlebt. Wir waren ganz offiziell bei der Eröffnung der Ausstellung „Russische Avantgarde“.
A few weeks later the dress became available and we have seen quite a bit since then. We officially went to the opening of the exhibition „Russian avantgarde“.

Das Muster ist einfach schön – und die viele Farben bieten sich zum kombinieren an. Es ist ein ideales Reisekleid. Es lässt sich superklein packen und was noch besser ist, faltenfrei entpacken. Es ist auf vielen Reisen mit im Gepäck.
I just love the pattern – the many colours make it eays to combine ot. It is an ideal travel dress. You can pack it super small and what’s even better it unpacks without creases. No wonder it comes along on many of my trips.

Mit einer Strickjacke und den Katzenschuhen wirkt das Kleid gleich weniger formell. Ich trage es gerne sowohl zum Ausgehen, als auch für einen Tag im Büro.
With a cardi and the kitty ballerinas the dress looks instantly less formal. I like to wear it for a night out as well as for a day in the office.

Ich trage es auch immer wieder gerne in Besprechungen und in der Politik wie hier im April 2016 als Delegierte beim Deutschen Städtetag in Aachen. An dem Tag habe ich viele Komplimente für mein Kleid bekommen, von anderen Frauen.
I like to wear it to meetings for business and politics, like here in April 2016 as a delegate in April 2016. That day I got quite a few compliments from other women.

Sieht so aus als müsste ich demnächst mal Bilder im Ausgehmodus damit machen. Glitzerpumps, Marabou-Tasche, Fascinator – das volle Programm.

French Curves: Team Playsuit

Le thème French Curves en septembre c’est le combi vs la salopette. Gnaaaahhh. La seule salopette que j’ai et moi sommes pas des amis. Et j’ai déjà montré mes combis pour l’été en août. Mais j’ai oublié quelque chose. J’ai un autre combi. Un peu oublié.
The French Curves‘ theme for sepemter is the playsuit vs the jumpsuit. The only jumpsuit I own and I are not exactly friends. And I already showed my summer playsuits in August. But I forgot something. I have another playsuit. A forgotten one.

Vendu chez ASOS pour la soirée dans les soldes d’été en 2015. J’ai la porte seulement comme pyjama. Les matériaux sont en vraie vie trop t-shirt pour mon goût pour dehors. Especiallement les shorts.
Sold at ASOS Curve in the summer sales of 2015 for a night out. So far I only wore this as a pyjama. The materials are a bit too t-shirty for my taste for outside. Especially the shorts.

Pour la challenge mon objectif était de créer une tenue qui est aussi moi avec ce que j’ai. Avec la blouse de Hell Bunny c’est plus habillé. J’adore le mix du chiffonsemi-transparent avec le boucle propre. La blouse a c’est classique secrétaire chic. Le ceinture montre ma taille qui est un peu perdu dans le Combi. Le sac à main et les talons sont très boho.
For the challenge my objective was to create an outfit with things already in my closet that is also me. With the Hell Bunny blouse it feels more dressy. I love the mix of the semi-transparent chiffon with the proper bow. The blouse has the classic secretary chic. The belt shows off my waist which is a bit lost in this play suit. The fake mongolian fur handbag and the heels are quite boho.

Golden Forest – Mein Herbstkleid

This dress is a golden riot. I love the kitschy autumn or fall forest print. So pretty you’d love to step into the print right away. I’ll wear this dress probably to death until mid or late November. Because let’s face it – it is a seasonal dress and it waited since January in my closet to get worn.
Dieses Kleid ist ein Traum in Gold und Kupfer. Ich liebe diesen kitschigen Druck eines goldenen Herbstwaldes. So schön, das man am liebsten direkt dort hinein möchte. Wahrscheinlich werde ich bis Mitte/ Ende November ständig dieses Kleid anziehen. Denn, Hand aufs Herz – es ist Jahreszeitlich sehr gebunden und ich freue mich seit Januar darauf es anzuziehen.

It is the very idea of my favourite season. Autumn when nature goes out with a bang in a golden splendour. Soon the mornings will be crips. The days get shorter. I love kicking leaves – but I won’t mind if I have to wait a few more weeks to do that.
Es ist das Klischee meiner liebsten Jahreszeit. Im Herbst wenn die Natur sich mit einem Paukenschlag verabschiedet. Landschaften in Gold, Gelb, Orange und Kupfer. Bald werden die Morgen wieder frisch. Die Tage werden kürzer. Ich liebe es durch die gefallenen Blätter zu stapfen – aber das kann gerne noch ein paar Wochen warten.

Felt fascinator with pompoms in mustard – soon it’ll be cold enough to wear it again.
Für dass Mini-Hütchen aus Filz mit Pompoms wird es bald wieder kühl genug.

The dress is from Retrolicious – like my cat dress with frames and my black- and white newspaper cat dress. Their speciality are (who would have thought) crazy or novelty prints. And the prints are stunning though the dresses themselves are rather simply made. Bought at Modcloth the „“Sights to Season“ dress lacks pockets. Bugger! Guess that’ll get changed soon though.
Das Kleid ist von Retrolicious – wie mein Katzenkleid mit den Bilderrahmen und auch mein Katzenkleid mit dem schwarz-weissen Zeitungsmuster. Die Muster sind sehr spektakulär auch wenn die Kleider selber recht einfach gemacht sind. Gekauft bei Modcloth ist das einzige was diesem Kleid wirklich fehlt Taschen. Aber das lässt sich arrangieren.

On the Go: Tropical Late Summer and Gingham

Outfit number one recently for the office was Laura Byrnes Alfreda Dress from PinUpGirlClothing (in new colours) – combined with some leo prints unlike here where I wore the Hawaiian Parrot pattern last year.

Not sure if that dark lippy is me but Gemma from RetroChick posed the Challenge to try a new lipstick .

Outfit numer two is an old favorite in a new colour: LindyBop’s Colette in Yellow Gingham (now sold out). I blame thee late Summer Sales! A great dress for summer. And yes, I also got this in light blue.

No make-up – a nude day. It was hot and I quite often go bare.

The raffia bag is true vintage and from Fräulein Anders – a great vintage shop in Berlin.

Unfortunately not en route to Paris – only the office!

French Curves: Maxi in the Mud

L’été et les vacances c’est aussi la saison du festival. Chaque été au début des grandes vacances il y a un festival dansma part de du centre-ville. Bochum Total. Avec cinq scènes. En général ça pluie au minimum un jour. Beaucoup des choses en été on s’imagine que le soleil brille. Mais pas toujours.
Summer and holidays are also festival time. At the beginning of the school holidays I even live in one. Or at the fringes of it in my part of the city centre. Bochum total. With five stages. As a rule it usually rains on one of the days. With most thing in summer we pretend the sun will shine and we are getting our brains fried. Well, doesn’t always happen.

Quand ma harpiste préférée, Nadia Birkenstock, a un gig sur le festival de Felsenmeer j’étais froide. Heureusement ça pas pleurait. Comme „roadie“ je m’habille très sensible. Jeans et T-Shirt.
While my favorite harpist, Nadia Birkenstock, was on the stage at the Felsenmeer-Festival I was cold. Fortunately it didn’t rain (drizzled a bit at a time though). Playing roadie for the day I even dressed sensible. Jeans and T-Shirt.

La robe que je porte est la seule de maxi. En général je la porte à la maison. Le maxi c’est pour moi aussi un look des festivals. Et festivals et le margouillis – une combinaison classique. Peut-être j’ai vite trop longue en Angleterre. Quand nous avons pris les photos c’était un jour triste et humide. Ici l’aout n’est pas la garantie pour chaleur mais dans les derniers ans pour beaucoup de pluie.
The dress I wear is my only maxi dress. Usually I wear it at home. Maxi dresses are for me also something for summer but although rather unpractical something I’d wear to a festival. At least a folk one. Festivals and mud however that is a classic combination – but perhaps I lived to long in England. When we took the pics it was a miserable grey and humid da. Somehow here august isn’t that blazing sunhine and heat but we do get a lot of rain instead.

J’aime bien des ballerines mais même plus les bottes. C’est ma première paire des bottes de pluie depuis vingt ans. Grace a JJ Fotwear. Ils sont disponibles en trois manches. J’ai le 2xl. Et c’est vraiment grand. Presque un peu trop de place. Bon qualité et lourd. Il y a des desseins différents – le tartan, les points et pour moi legarou. Rrrrrrrr. Ça va bien avec des plumes-de-paon, n’est-ce pas?
I love my ballerinas but I actually prefer the boots. These are my first wellies in 20 years! Thanks to JJ Footwear. You can get them in three calf widths. I am wearing 2xl. They are big. A bit too big even. Nice quality and heavy. There are different designs like tartan, polka dots and it had to be the animal print for me. Rrrrrrr. I think it goes rather well with the peacock feathers, doesn’t it?

On the Go – Outfits im Alltag

Ok, ich gebe zu meine Outfits für den (Büro-) Alltag sind nicht unbedingt alltäglich. Ich habe da viele Freiheiten, die ich vorher nicht hatte! Die Idee kam auf, als Elli von Curvy Fashionelli neulich ihre Outfits fürs Büro zeigte. Aber die Diskussion kommt öfters auf – ich trage diese Sachen wirklich. Nicht nur fürs Shooting. Der grosse Unterschied zwischen Blog und Realität ist ich schminke mich selten. Augenbrauen nachziehen – gerne. Aber der Rest? Muss nicht.
Ok, I admit my outfits for every day are not exactly what most people consider every day outfits. Though I do have a lot of liberties where I work! The idea came when Elli from CurvyFashionelli showed her regular looks recently. But I had these discussions bevor. I really wear the dresses I show you on a daily basis. Not just for shootings. The main difference between blog an realtiy is make-up. I do retouch my eybrows but full make-up? Not really. Only when I feel like it.

Ach, und die Hütchen sind auch mehr für Freizeit. Allerdings trage ich die auch mehr und mehr so. Wobei Baskenmützen für mich nicht zu den Hütchen gehören. Die Hütchen trage ich zum Ausgehen, shoppen, manchmal auch zur Arbeit oder wenn ich in der Politik unterwegs bin. Aber weder in der Ratssitzung noch zu Besprechungen.
Oh, an the fascinators or mini-hats are more for my spare time. Though I wear them more and more. I don’t count my berets into that. The hats I wear for a night out, a meal, going shopping, even to work or council. Though I neither wear them during council sessions or in meetings.

Summertine – 3 Looks in Shorts or Playsuits

Sure I got legs – even above my knees. Most of us do. I barely show them though. Today is different. My very own summer special – 3 looks in shorts or playsuits (or rompers). Perfect for the beach, pool or marina.
Natürlich habe ich Beine – auch oberhalb der Knie. Fast alle von uns haben welche. Meist zeige ich sie auch nicht. Heute dafür schon. Mein eigenes Sommerspecial – 3 Looks mit Shorts oder Kurz-Overalls. Perfekt für Strand, Pool und Boot.

The LindyBop swimmer playsuit is a bugger to get on – but once it’s on it is super cute and even sexy. At least with heels. I felt like I needed a yoga class to get the zipper up. Much better if someone can give you a hand. Originially a halterneck but that style doesn’t work for me. So I turned it into straps. Works well for me now.
Der LindyBop Mini-Overall mit den Badenixen ist unheimlich schwer alleine anzuziehen – aber einmal drin ist er super süß und sexy. Zumindest mit Absatzschuhen. Ich hatte das Gefühl ich brauche einen Yoga-Crash-Kurs um den Reißverschluss hoch zu bekommen. Viel besser mit etwas Hilfe. Eigentlich ein Neckholder – aber das ist nichts für mich. Also habe ich die Bänder zu Trägern umfunktioniert. Klappt hervorragend!

These nautical shorts from LindyBop are super cute – even if they make me look shorter with the bardot top with the boat print. I got them a size too large as mine was already sold out. Not the most flattering but nice on a hot day. The Sailor top with the Anchor is from Sheego and I altered it to a Bardot top as my DIY your Closet project in May.
Diese nautischen Shorts von LindyBop sind supersüß – auch wenn sie mich kürzer aussehen lassen – zumindest mit dem Bardot Top mit dem Schiff und Leuchtturmmuster. Die Shorts eine Nummer grösser zu bestellen war suboptimal – aber in meiner Grösse waren sie schon ausverkauft. Nicht gerade vorteilhaft aber gut für heisse Tage. Das Top mit dem Anker ist von Sheego und ich habe es im Mai von einem Langshirt in ein Bardot Top als DIY your Closet Projekt angepasst.

The last look is the two piece playsuit I wore for the French Curves Poolside summer special. The top was meant to be knotted. Didn’t suit me. That’s why I wear it like this with a few pins. The shorts are short. Cute though. Fun on a seriously hot summer day.
Das letzte Outfit ist eine Kombination die ich für die French Curves Poolside Sommer Ausgabe vorgestellt habe. Das Top sollte geknotet werden. Das steht mir aber nicht. Deswegen trage ich es mit ein paar Sicherheitsnadeln. Die Shorts sind schon sehr kurz. Aber süss. Genau richtig für einen heissen Sommertag.

Bonjour d’Alsace – plus size princess on tour

There are places that look like right out of a fairy tale or it’s Disney version. The Alsace has quite a number of places as pretty as a picture. Itterswiller is quite a small place. But I had a hard time not bursting into song and skipping along the main road signing „little town“ from Beauty and the Beast expecting the villagers to sing along „bonjour“.
Manche Orte sehen aus wie aus dem Märchen oder zumindest wie die Disney Version. Im Elsass gibt es recht viele solcher zutiefst entzückender Orte. Itterswiller ist einer davon. Ziemlich klein sogar. Trotzdem fiel es auch mir schwer nicht loszusingen und die Hauptstrasse entlang zu hüpfen und „little town“ aus Beauty and the Beast zu singen – in freudiger Erwartung das die Anwohner einstimmen.

Trouble is if I burst into song the locals wouldn’t be that friendly. Less likely to sing along. There’d be no dancing either. I am more the type to sing raunchy songs in a tavern with my voice. Walt would spiral in this grave. Anyway – I felt like a Disney princes in the making. Either in disguise or before she meets Prince Charming.
Nun, wenn ich anfangen würde, wäre das Dorf nicht ganz so begeistert. Sie würden auch nicht anfangen zu tanzen. Ich bin mit meiner Stimme besser geeignet für anrüchige Lieder in einer verrauchten Kaschemme. Walt würde in seinem Grab rotieren. Anyway – ich kam mir trotzdem wie eine Disney Prinzessin vor. Entweder in Verkleidung oder bevor sie ihren Prince Charming trifft.

The Hotel Kieffer was a splendid backdrop. What a match to my dress. Guess next time I’ll come with the parents we’ll give it a try. The rooms on the website look promising, too. We had lunch at Hotel Arnold’s Winstub. Food was lovely. Must recook the „Palette à la diable à l’alsacienne“ – smoked pork in a mustard sauce – recipe in French.
Das Hotel Kieffer war ein wunderbarer Hintergrund. Perfekt auf mein Kleid abgestimmt. Nächstes Mal wenn ich mit Eltern unterwegs bin sollten wir das mal ausprobieren. Die Zimmer auf der Webseite sahen sehr gut aus. Lunch hatten wir in der Winstub des Hotel Arnold. Das Essen war hervorragend. Ich muss demnächst mal mein „Palette à la diable à l’alsacienne“ – Schäuffele, ähnlich wie Kasseler in Senfsauce, Rezept auf Deutsch, nachkochen.
