Alaaf, Helau und ManTau. Karneval ist für einige schlimmer als die Pest. Für andere wie Weihnachten mit Spass. Ich gehöre unter anderem auch herkunftsbedingt zur zweiten Gruppe. Als rheinische Frohnatur bin ich zwar über Umwege im Revier gelandet, aber wie Trude Herr so schön sang „man geht niemals so ganz“.
Alaaf and Helau – the two major traditional celebratory cries for carnival in Germany. For some carnival is worse than the plague. For others more fun than Christmas. I was raised in one of the hotspots of the carnival culture. You can take the girl out of the region, but not qiute the region out of the gal. I cherish this tradition. So much fun. And even in costumes. It’s the best! Haha. Sorry.

„Haben Sie denn ein Kostüm?“ fragte mich die Tage noch eine Berliner Architektin mit der ich ein Projekt bearbeite. „Eins??“ Nun, bei mir hat sich da einiges über die Jahre gesammelt. Letztes Jahr war ich Rotkäppchen. 2015 und davor (aber auch zu Altweiber) als fesche Piratin unterwegs. Miss Piggy und die French Maid – das Kammermädchen, sind undokumentiert. Noch.

Last year I was Red Riding Hood. 2015 and before (and also this Thursday) a dashing pirate. Miss Piggy and the French Maid are un-documented. For now.

Das Geisha Kostüm habe ich mir schon 2015 gekauft. Nicht für Karneval, sondern weil ich einen einfachen aber dramatischen Kimono für zuhause wollte. Ich hatte auch nicht nach Verkleidungen gesucht, als mir Amazon den bei meiner Suche vorgeschlagen hatte.
I bought the Geisha costume in 2015. Not for fancy dress occasions but because I wanted a kimono with dramatic sleeves in my size. Amazon suggested it along with the regular loungewear ones.

Asia-Muster liebe ich – ob mit bei dem Kimono-Kleid von Anna Scholz oder aber bei dem Suzie-Wong-Kleid von LindyBop. Das „Ich bin kein Kostüm“ – kann ich nur bedingt nachvollziehen. Können wir aber gerne mal persönlich diskutieren. Dann aber auch über Feminismus, bzw. Sexismus. Würde ich mit einer Gruppe Japaner dieses Kostüm tragen? Wahrscheinlich nicht – die würden sich viel mehr über Rotkäppchen im Dirndl freuen.
I love Asia inspired patterns – be it the versatile Anna Scholz kimono dress or LindyBop’s Suzie-Wong wiggle dress. The debate wether this is an appropriate costume or not, is one I will only discuss in person. It will involve a discussion about feminism or rather sexism. Would I wear this if I’d show a group of Japanese around? Probably not – they’d be more excited to see me as Red Riding Hood wearing a Dirndl.

Das Thema Kopfschmuck fand ich heikel – denn Perücke geht bei mir nur draussen. Sonst wird mir damit zu warm, juckt und ich habe dann einfach weniger Spass. Karneval ist für mich Spass und kein Kostümwettbewerb.
Most „Japanese“ fancy dress up costumes include a decorated whig. But I only do whigs outside. I find the ones I tried before to warm, itchy and thus a nuissance. Carnival isn’t for me about having the greatest custume but about having fun.

Also habe ich mir ein paar Bilder angesehen und einen Blumenhaarschmuck gebastelt. Das ging recht flott – ca. 10 Minuten. Kein Fascinator – der Blütenkranz besteht aus Deko-Kirschblüten (Keller), einer künstlichen Orchidee (aus meiner Küche) und einer Haarblume. Man glaubt es kaum – die Pracht ist erstaunlich feierresistent und hält schunkelsicher!
So I made an image search and made my own floral crown. A quick job – done in a llittle less than 10 minutes. Not really a facinator, more like a wreath. It os made of some deco cherry blossom twigs (from my basement – bought but never used), a fake orchid from my kitchen and a corsage. Hard to believe – this headgear is quite party resilient and rather danceproof!



Nahaufnahme fürs Make-Up. Pin-Up inspiriert.  Peaches Belvedere hat dazu ein tolles youTube Tutorial gemacht. Aber ich brauchte etwas einfacheres – feierfest und schweiss-resistent. Als ich nach Hause kam war es sogar noch dran. Nur der Lippenstift mustte aufgefrischt werden.
