Maritime Fun returns in a clear royal blue. Both the dress and the top are trusted wardrobe staples. I wear that dress usually to the footie. The top is something I usually wear at home paired with capri jeans. Outfit No.1 is very typical for me – the second look is without the hat quite normal.

Another year over. Miss Kittenheel as a blog is in it’s 4th year. A toddler now. I can safely say I have now more fun with it than in the first two years. Wieder ist ein Jahr geschafft. Miss Kittenheel, der Blog ist ein seinem vierten Jahr. Quasi ein Kleinkind. Ich kann mit Sicherheit sagen das letzte Jahr hat mir viel mehr Freude bereitet als die ersten beiden.
My expectations are lower – or more realistic: internet fame hasn’t knocked on my door. And to be fair I am not really running after it either. I am happy in my niche. Happy with my readers. And I have quite a few outfits queueing up in my notes for 2018 to entertain or inspire you. Meine Erwartungen sind geringer, bzw. realistischer: Internet-Ruhm hat nicht an meine Tür geklopft. Gut, wirklich danach gejagt habe ich auch nicht. Ich bin zufrieden in meiner Nische. Und mit meinen Lesern, bzw. Leserinnen. Ich habe auch 2018 einiges für euch an Ideen in meinen Notizen.
Last year I decided to cut a little back on the shopping. And I did. Well, at least compared to the year before. I am not still back to pre-blogging and the January sales are not the time to start that either. Letztes Jahr habe ich beschlossen etwas weniger zu shoppen. Das hat auch geklappt. Zumindest verglichen mit dem Jahr davor. Ich bin immer noch nicht auf dem Level wie vor der Bloggerei und die Schlussverkäufe im Januar sind auch kein guter Zeitpunkt das durchzuführen.
Homemade Fascinator – Selbstgemachter Fascinator
I also kept a wardrobe diary for the entire year. I used my shopping track list and wrote the dates behind when I wore which dress/ jeans/ skirt. Not down to the last sock – but a much more reliable system than the one where you turn the hanger in your closet around. Ich habe es geschafft das ganze Jahr ein Kleidertagebuch zu führen. Ausgehend von einer Auflistung meiner Einkäufe, habe mit notiert was ich wann anhatte. Nicht bis zum letzten Socken herunter gebrochen – aber ein wesentlich verlässlicheres System als einfach nur die Kleiderbügel herumzudrehen.
I already knew more or less which thigs I didn’t wear. But it was interesting to see what I wear most and how often I wear my favourite things. Dann das ich meine Sachen anziehe und was eher nicht wusste ich vorher schon. Aber zu sehen was wie oft getragen wird und auch wie oft ich Lieblingsteile trage war schon spannend.
What are my New Year’s resolutions?
Get a bit fitter. And fit again into a few dresses I didn’t wear this year. Which is not really a gargantuan goal. Only half a dress size. So, more cycling, too. Getting more sleep, definitely. Less stress. Cook more (instead of eating out). Was sind denn meine guten Vorsätze für das nächste Jahr?
Etwas fitter zu werden. Und wieder in einige der Kleider zu passen, die ich dieses Jahr nicht anhatte. Das ist bei einer halben Kleidergrösse kein gigantisches Unterfangen. Also, mehr Fahrradfahren. Mehr Schlaf (ohhhh yes). Weniger Stress. Wieder mehr selber kochen (anstelle was zu holen).
Spend more time with my favourite people. Actually we are working on that. Two of them, my parents, are moving to Bochum sometime in mid-summer. Same town, but to a suburb. A bit of romance would be nice, but it takes two to tango. Two of my favorite people are expecting a child. And I am quite excited about that. Life will change. It usually does. Mehr Zeit mit meinen Lieblingsmenschen verbringen. Daran arbeiten wir ganz aktuell. Zwei davon, meine Eltern, werden nächstes Jahr zu mir nach Bochum ziehen. Also in die gleiche Stadt. Aber in einen Vorort. Etwas Romantik wäre nett, aber dazu gehören immer zwei. Zwei andere Menschen, an denen mir viel liegt, erwarten bald ein Kind. Und auch darauf freue ich mich. Das Leben verändert sich wieder einmal. Wie immer.
Let’s bring a little reason out into that world where fake news and hate speech run rampant. Don’t fight on every corner – but pick your fights. We just have to. If the wise always give in, the stupid will run the circus – and in the long run that is very bad for all of us. Anyway – have a very happy new year! Lasst uns etwas Vernunft in diese Welt bringen in der Fake News und Hasstiraden sich rasant verbreiten. Man muss nicht an jeder Ecke kämpfen – aber man sollte sich schon dagegen wehren. Wenn die Klügeren immer nachgeben, regieren die Deppen die Welt. Auf lange Sicht schadet das uns allen. Anyway – ich wünsche Euch einen guten Rutsch und ein schönes neues Jahr!

It was Leopard Love last year for Valentine’s Day for me. I bought the material, an old cap on eBay as fake fur. Not sure about that though.

It’s September now – and a different uptake on the Dirndl for Oktoberfest Craze with this HellBunny Hermeline skirt. The facinator is made from leftover fabric my taylor gave me after he shortened the hem. Es ist mittlerweile September und Zeit für einen etwas anderen Ansatz beim Dirndl-Thema für Oktoberfest Craze. Der Fascinator ist aus dem Stoff der beim Kürzen des Rocks übriggeblieben ist – den hat mein Schneider für mich aufgehoben.
Bird of paradise in this silky peacock dress from LindyBop. Again the hem had to be taken in and some fabric remained. Paradiesvogel im (kunst-) seidenen Kleid von LindyBop. Auch hier musste der Saum wieder eingekürzt werden und etwas Stoff blieb übrig.
The grand finale for 2016 was the workshop „Shape up your Hat“ by Ricarda Engelsberger from „Mein wunderbarer Hursalon“. We were quite pleased with the transformation from a boring country trilby to a chic 1950s bandeau hat. Den feierlichen Jahresabschluss gab es mit einem tollen Workshop „Shape Up your Hat“ von Ricarda Engelsberger von „Mein wunderbarer Hursalon“. Wir waren ganz angetan wie aus einem biederem Trachtenhut ein schicker 1950ger Cocktail-Hut wurde.
The outfit is nice for a New Year’s Eve party, going to the ballet or a nice concert. Just because people don’t really dress up for occasions doesn’t mean you can’t. So if you want to take at least that little black dress out – do it. Please don’t hesistate to wear or use something. I have so many vintage things that were kept for good and at the end of a life have never been used at all. Das Outfit eignet sich sehr gut für eine Silvester-Party, um ins Ballet oder ins klassische Konzert oder die Philharmonie zu gehen. Nur weil viele Leute sich nicht mehr in Schale werfen um auszugehen, muss man da ja nicht mitmachen. Es ist immer noch eine gute Gelegenheit mindestens das kleine Schwarze herauszuholen. Bitte nicht immer alles für irgendwann aufheben – ich habe soviele Vintage Sachen, die immer für gut aufgehpben wurden und nie benutzt wurden.
This isn’t really a little black dress. It can be formal. But it can be easily dressed down, too. The swan border print makes it a good one to combine with folksy elements. Or a classic 1950s look with a cardigan. Das hier ist kein kleines Schwarzes. Man kann es etwas formaler tragen. Aber man kann es genauso gut etwas lässiger tragen. Der Schwanendruck ist schön mit Trachten- oder Folkloreteilen zu kombinieren. Oder zu einem 50ger Jahre Look mit einer kurzen Strickjacke.
Vintage Bochum
I bought the fascinator in one of my favourite shops in Bochum – the Le Salon Vintage. The Salon is specialised on vintage fashion from the 1920s to 1950s. Like most places I have been to only the accessories fit me – but there is plenty of these: chamring hats, shoes, handbags and gloves in a beautiful setting. Since November you can find Le Salon at Oskar-Hoffmann-Strasse 43. In the back of the shop is Le Rouge – a vintage beauty parlor. Den Fascinator habe ich in einem meiner Lieblingsläden in Bochum gekauft – demLe Salon Vintage. Der Salon hat sich auf Mode aus den 1920ger bis 1950gern spezialisiert. Meist passen mir da wie fast immer nur die Accessoires – aber davon gibt es genug: charmante Hütchen, Handtaschen, Schuhe und Handschuhe in einem schönen Ambiente. Seit November in der Oskar-Hoffmann-Strasse 43. Angeschlossen istLe Rouge – dann klappt es auch mit dem authentischen VIntage Make-Up.

Mein Jahr bei DIY your Closet hat ein würdiges Finale gefunden – den Hutworkshop Shape up your Hat! der inspirierenden Ricarda von Mein wunderbarer Hutsalon aus Wuppertal. Aus einem alten Trachtenhut habe ich unter sachkundiger Anleitung für meine Oktoberfest Craze Reihe einen rasanten Cocktailhut im Stil der 1950ger Jahre gemacht.
Ricarda Engelsberger habe ich im Juni beim Ladies Day – dem Pferderennen mit Hutwettbewerb des traditionsreichen Krefelder Rennclubs kennengelernt. Knapp zwei Monate später hat sie mich zu diesem Workshop eingeladen. Letztes Wochenende fand dann eine eins zu eins Betreuung statt. Das ist kein Sonderfall. In ihrem Atelier ist die Teilnahme von vorneherein auf zwei bis drei Personen begrenzt.
I met Ricarda Engelsberger in June at Ladies Day – the horse racing day with a hat competition of the prestigious Krefeld jockey club. About two month later she invited me to this Workshop. Last week we finally met and it was a one on one supervision. For her not that exeptional as the event is limited to two to three participants anyway.

Für Ricarda Engelsberger ist das Hütemachen kein Hobby. Die Modistin hat ihr Handwerk von der Pike auf gelernt, inklusive Meistertitel. Sie fertigt Modellhüte und Kleinserien seit ca. 1998. Das Atelier ist in Wuppertal am Arrenberg, einem Gründerzeitquartier. Dort bringt Ricarda sich auch mit ihrem Atelier beim Verein Aufbruch am Arrenberg ein. Einige von Euch kennen Ricarda Engelsberger oder zumindest ihre Kreationen aus dem Vintage Flaneur.
For Ricarda Engelsberger hat making isn’t a hobby. It is a craft she learned from the ropes, including the hard earned title of a master milliner from the german Chamber of Crafts. Sheproduces model hats and mini series since 1998. Her workshop is in Wuppertal, a historic district called Arrenberg. Here she is also active in the local community to enhance the quarter. Some of you will know Ricarda Engelsberger or her creations from the German magazineVintage Flaneur.
Wenn man schon in Wuppertal ist… Sehr cool – nach ewigen Zeiten mal wieder Schwebebahn gefahren. Fun Fact: Ricarda und ich haben festgestellt dass wir ca. 3 Jahre in den 1990gern Nachbarn in Ober-Barmen waren. Wir haben Tür an Tür gewohnt. Die Welt ist ein Dorf! If in Wuppertal… quite cool to take thesuspension railwayagain. Fun fact: we realised that Ricarda and I were neighbours for about 3 years back in the 1990s in another part of town. We lived door to door. The world truly is a small place!
Ricardas Atelier ist klein aber fein. Alles drin was man braucht. Gut und übersichtlich sortiert und trotzdem mit einem liebevollen Händchen ausgestattet. Ricarda’s work space is small but neat. Everything to work properly. Well sorted and still with a loving touch to details.
Kleine Demonstration – der Hutweiter aus den 50gern. Die Heizspirale blieb dafür aus. The audio is crap on this one – basically it is a hat stratcher from the 50s. The hot spiral isn’t switched on.
Wir haben erst noch kurz einen Hut, den ich bei Oma Klara gekauft habe aufgearbeitet. Leider wurde der Hut beim Versand gefaltet! Da wird ein Teil ein Leben lang in Ehren gehalten und kommt verbeult an um Porto zu sparen. Traurig. Die Blüten waren auch flacher als jeder Pfannkuchen. Jetzt strahlt er dank Ricarda wieder!
We first spruced up a hat I bought at Oma Klara. Sadly the hat was folded for shipping. Not a way to treat a hat that was kept for good for a lifetime. Ricarda managed to make it shine again and fluffed up the flowers that were flatter as pancakes.

Also als erstes haben wir uns mal meine Vorlage angeschaut und ich habe Ricarda erklärt was damit prinzipiell passieren soll. First we had a look at my old hat and I explained what I’d like to turn it into.
Ausgangsmodell: biederer Trachtenhut. Bei eBay wegen der Federn erworben. Zu klein. Before: traditional German „country“ hat. Bought on eBay because of the feather pad. Too small to fit my head.
Vision: 1950ger inspirierter Half-Hat oder Cocktailhut im Jagd-Look. Erhalt und Weitervervendung der Original-Garnitur. After: 1950s inspired bandeaux or half hat in a hunting style using the original trimmings
Arbeitsschritte / Steps taken:
Vermessung des Hutes und der Vorlage (oben in der Collage: Leo-Hut mit Rippen) measuring the hat and the model (the leo one with the brown ribs in the collage above)
Erklärung wie ein Half-Hat funktioniert, bzw. konstruiert wird und Überlegung aus wievielen Teilen das Endprodukt betehen soll explanation how to make a half hat and its construction and design approach how many parts the final product will have
Vorlage abschmücken, Ripsbänder abtrennen dismanteling the old hat
Skizzieren der Bestandteile mit Schneiderkreide chalking the parts on the old hat
Ausschneiden und Glattbügeln der Einzelteile der Filzgrundlage cutting and ironing the parts from the felt base
Garniturtest (und Mittagspause) mocking up the decoration and lunchbreak

Kaum wiederzuerkennen! Auf dem Modell. Die Federn liegen eng an und gehen etwas in die Stirn. Da ich fast immer nur sehr diskreten Ohrschmuck trage wird es keinen Konflikt an den überhängenden Enden der Kordel geben. Hardly recognizable! On the model. Die feather pad is kept close to the base and arch a little into the forehead. I usually wear discreet earrings, so there will be no conflict with the overhanging trimming.
Und jetzt angezogen! Ein Traum. Ricarda und ich waren sehr begeistert. And now worn. Fits like a dream. Ricarda and I were very excited about the result.

My shopping companion, the wonderful harpist Nadia Birkenstock nearly keeled over when she saw my find in the January sale – this ugly Christmas Sweater. („Are you nuts?“). Well it was reduced to a fiver and I was adamant and bought it. At my place she admitted that with the green tafetta skirt (which I didn’t bring along when we were shopping) it actually makes a great wacky Christmas outfit.
Meine Shoppingbegleitung, die zauberhafte Harfinistin Nadia Birkenstock, ist beim Anblick dieses aussergewöhnlichen Pullovers im Winterschlussverkauf beinahe hinten übergekippt. („Bist du wahnsinnig?“). Naja, er war im Sale auf 5 Euro runtergesetzt und ich liess mich vom Kauf nicht abhalten. Zuhause musste sie lachend zugeben, dass der schon „der Hammer“ mit dem Taftrock ist. Den hatte ich aber natürlich bei H+M nicht dabei.
Like one the quirky RetroChick I do love my kitschy Christmas outfits – and the matching accessories. The simple matte golden kittenheels get a bit of elf or Tinkerbell magic with the red pompom shoe clips. Monty, der Mops (the Pug) put his usual Mini-Santa-Hat hairclip on. Wie die herrlich ungewöhnliche RetroChick liebe ich kitschige Weihnachtsoutfits – und die passenden Accessoires. Diese einfachen mattgoldenen Kittenheels sehen durch die roten PomPoms aus als wären sie von den Elfen vom Weihnachtsmann. Monty, der Mops trägt seinen üblichen weihnachtlichen Schmuck.
The poinsettia headpiece arrived last year a few days too late and this is the first time it gets worn. Der Weihnachtsstern-Haarschmuck kam letztes Jahr etwas verspätet an und jetzt trage ich ihn zum ersten Mal.
Quite simple but pretty and good for travelling. Relativ schlicht – aber hübsch und gut für unterwegs.

Yep, another Christmas outfit – from LindyBop. Unlike the #LindyBauble with the red checks or the #LindyMail with the mini black gingham dresses this is like my Bernie Dexter Winterwonderland dress a proper themed one. It sold out really quickly. No surprise it is lovely, not too much kitsch and the price was great, too. I think that works pretty nicely after Christmas as a winter dress, too. It even adds a touch of chalet romance to my flat.
Und noch ein Weihnachtsoutfit – nimmt das denn gar kein Ende? Doch ja – Ende nächster Woche 😉 Im Gegensatz zu dem Kleid mit den roten Karos aus#LindyBaubleoder dem aus #LindyMail mit den schwarzen Vichy-Karo ist das hier ein richtiges Weihnachtskleid – wieBernie Dexters Winterwonderland. Leider war das Kleid superschnell ausverkauft. Wenig überraschend, es ist charmant, nicht zuviel Kitsch und hatte auch einen guten Preis. Ich finde das Kleid kann auch noch gut nach Weihnachten getragen werden – als Winterkleid. Da bekommt selbst meine Wohnung etwas Hüttenzauber.
I only wish the Alps were a bit higher up so that 1-2 inches could be taken off the hem. This really riles me with the Hell Bunny Christmas dress, too – even worse with that one – if you take the hem in Bambi gets its‘ legs chopped off. Lindy Bop hat three items in the Alpine collection – my dress, a twin set and a skirt. Ich wünschte mir die Alpen lägen etwas höher damit der Saum um 3-5cm eingekürzt werden kann. Das finde ich einfach nur ärgerlich. Ebenso beimHell Bunny Weihnachtskleid– da ist es noch ungeschickter – lässt man das Kleid kürzen, hat Bambi keine Füsse mehr. LindyBop hatte drei Teile in der Alpen-Kollektion – mein Kleid, ein Twin Set und einenRock.
Thought this was a perfect match – a traditional vintage scarf and brooch. Ein klassisches Trachtentuch und eine Vintagebrosche runden das Outfit ab.
A vintage muff – as a hostess you normally don’t wear a handbag – but if I’d need one and it was cold outside, I’d take it along. Kein alter Hut, sondern ein Vintage-Muff – als Gestgeberin hat man meist keine Handtasche dabei, aber wäre es kalt und ich müsste raus – das wäre meine Wahl.
