HoHoHo – are you already in a festive mood? The Christmas season is here again. The Christmas market is open and I already had two pinaple skewers covered in white chocolate. No mulled wine yet, though. HoHoHo – seid ihr schon in Weihnachtsstimmung? Die Adventszeit hat begonnen. Der Weihnachtsmarkt ist eröffnet und ich hatte schon zwei weisse Ananasspiesse. Allerdings noch keinen Glühwein!
Such a pretty dress – I love my tartans, I have this dress in red, too and have shown it on this blog in April with bright greens. Ein tolles Kleid – diesmal mit einem winterlichen Auftritt. Im April gab es das hier schon mal mit frischem Grün zu sehen – ich habe das Kleid aber auch in Rot.
The fur is vintage – the cuffs are made of an old fake fur scarf. The collar is actually a 1950s blonde mink scarf pinned to my dress. Der Pelz ist Vintage – die Manschetten sind aus einem alten Kunstfellschal gemacht und der Kragen ist eine weisse Nerz-Krawatte aus den 1950gern.
I sorted my Christmas jewellry. Half the brooches are vintage. All of the earrings are new(ish). The bracelet is my first bit of festive jewellry, bought in 2003. Meinen Weihnachtsschmuck habe ich schon sortiert. Die Hälfte der Broschen sind alt, die Ohrringe alle „neu“. Das Armband war mein erster Weihnachtsschmuck, gekauft ca 2003.
Guess tomorrow I’ll start operation Christmas tree. So far I haven’t decided if it’ll be the black or the white Christmas tree this year. Morgen werde ich wahrscheinlich wieder den Weihnachtsbaum hochholen. Bis jetzt weiss ich nur noch nicht ob der schwarze oder weisse Weihnachtsbaum aufgestellt wird.

Ich bin ein grosser Weihnachtsfan: ich liebe die triefigen und heiteren (amerikanischen) Weihnachtslieder, die Lichter, die Dekorationen, den Süsskram, Stilton (ein englischer Blauschimmelkäse), Sherry, Port- und Glühwein. Und natürlich die Weihnachtskleider und festlichen Outfits.
My shopping companion, the wonderful harpist Nadia Birkenstock nearly keeled over when she saw my find in the January sale – this ugly Christmas Sweater. („Are you nuts?“). Well it was reduced to a fiver and I was adamant and bought it. At my place she admitted that with the green tafetta skirt (which I didn’t bring along when we were shopping) it actually makes a great wacky Christmas outfit.
Meine Shoppingbegleitung, die zauberhafte Harfinistin Nadia Birkenstock, ist beim Anblick dieses aussergewöhnlichen Pullovers im Winterschlussverkauf beinahe hinten übergekippt. („Bist du wahnsinnig?“). Naja, er war im Sale auf 5 Euro runtergesetzt und ich liess mich vom Kauf nicht abhalten. Zuhause musste sie lachend zugeben, dass der schon „der Hammer“ mit dem Taftrock ist. Den hatte ich aber natürlich bei H+M nicht dabei.
Like one the quirky RetroChick I do love my kitschy Christmas outfits – and the matching accessories. The simple matte golden kittenheels get a bit of elf or Tinkerbell magic with the red pompom shoe clips. Monty, der Mops (the Pug) put his usual Mini-Santa-Hat hairclip on. Wie die herrlich ungewöhnliche RetroChick liebe ich kitschige Weihnachtsoutfits – und die passenden Accessoires. Diese einfachen mattgoldenen Kittenheels sehen durch die roten PomPoms aus als wären sie von den Elfen vom Weihnachtsmann. Monty, der Mops trägt seinen üblichen weihnachtlichen Schmuck.
The poinsettia headpiece arrived last year a few days too late and this is the first time it gets worn. Der Weihnachtsstern-Haarschmuck kam letztes Jahr etwas verspätet an und jetzt trage ich ihn zum ersten Mal.
Quite simple but pretty and good for travelling. Relativ schlicht – aber hübsch und gut für unterwegs.

A few of you who know my blog will probably know I love to make my own fascinators. So here is my give-away for you – a bespoke fascinator. You pick the material and the decoration – it can be a festive or simply a winter one or one for New Year’s Eve.
Einige von Euch, die meinen Blog kennen wissen wahrscheinlich dass ich viele meine Fascinator gerne selber mache – und so verlose ich heute einen Fascinator nach Wunsch. Er wird eigens für Euch gefertigt. Ihr sucht Euch bei mir die Materialien und die Dekoration aus. Egal ob weihnachtlich, glamourös für Silvester, oder winterlich.
You decide. The base will be round though. I got frosted berries, mini toffee apples, snowballs and quite a few things more. Have a peek on my pinterest board. (There are vintage and bought hats as well on there.)

Today is the first of Advent. The first of four Sundays before Christmas. Time to get out the themed jewellery, hats and dresses. I love kitsch and this seasonal stuff. Still need to make a new fascinator for the Christmas parties, one as a giveaway for Curvy Christmas and one or two for friends as presents. Heute ist der erste Advent. Der erste von vier Sonntagen vor Weihnachten. Der richtige Zeitpunkt um einen Teil meines Schmucks, Hütchen und Kleider wieder hervor zu holen. Ich liebe Kitsch und Weihnachtskarten. Ich muss immer noch einen neuen Fascinator für meine Weihnachtspartys und einen zum verlosen für Curvy Christmas und ein oder zwei für Freundinnen machen.
Some of my oldest X-mas trinkets: got the earrings and charm bracelet from a lovely little online shop in the US in 2004. The brooch is vintage. Mein erster Weihnachtsschuck – die Ohrringe und das Armband habe ich in einem entzückenden kleinen Onlineshop aus den USA ca. 2004 gekauft. Die Brosche ist alt.

More Christmas bling – the bracelet from Etsy is a 1950s origninal from the US with cellophan snowflakes. Perfect for a snow queen! Mehr Weihnachtlicher Schmuck – das Armbade habe ich bei Etsy gefunden. Ein Orignial aus den 1950gern mit Zellophan-Schneeflocken. Perfekt für eine Schneekönigin!
This is a DIY brooch – made from giant snowflake and tiny skate earrings. Die Brosche ist selbstgemacht – oder besser zusammengestellt aus einem riesigem Schneeflocken- und zwei kleinen Schlittschuhohrringen.
The three vintage brooches are via Ebay – I found the bauble earrings in October in a small shop on an island in the north sea. Die drei Vintagebroschen habe ich bei Ebay gefunden. Die Ohrringe im Oktober in einem kleinen Schmuckladen auf Borkum.
A walk through the winter woods: this is a sort of DIY fascinator – bought the bouquet and strapped it onto a headband. No outfit pics yet. That’ll change soon! Ein Spaziergang durch den Winterwald: das hier ist auch irgendwie selbstgemacht – ein kleines Gesteck auf einem Haarband befestigt. Davon gibt es noch keine Outfitbilder – die kommen noch!
This is actually another Christmas brooch (from Etsy) – but it is the more or less permantly on this squirrel dress. But to be fair I only wear this in autumn and winter. Das hier ist zwar eigentlich eine weitere Weihnachtsbrosche (von Etsy) – bleibt aber immer am Eichhörnchenkleid. Gut, das ziehe ich auch nur im (Spät-)Herbst und Winter an.
The last pic is „Monty der Mops“ (the pug), my handbag dog dressed up for Christmas. Claire’s is the place where I got this little trinket a few years ago. I think at least in 2010. Auf dem letzten Bild ist „Monty der Mops“, meine Hundehandtasche weihnachtlich zurecht gemacht. Das Teil ist von Claire’s wo es alle Jahre wieder sowas gibt, ich meine das hier ist von 2010.

I just feel like Miss Santa in that charming outfit. I make quite a darling little helper, don’t I? And I come with different outfits too – have you seen this and this yet?

Und ich habe auch schon was zum Wechseln – ihr kennt schon die anderen Outfits – das hier und das?
Ok – not quite the pose – but currently that is not such a good idea. Nun denn – ganz die Pose habe ich nicht getroffen, aber das ist im Moment auch noch keine so gute Idee.

Etwas Schmuck um mit dem Baum zu Weihnachten um die Wette zu glitzern – das Armband braucht noch eine Verlängerung. Die Laterne war heute nicht zu sehen, dafür aber in ein paar Tagen bei einem anderen Outfit. Leider ist der Sicherheitsverschluss der kleinen Blütenzweigbrosche defekt – etwas was mit in letzter Zeit öfters mal bei Ebay passiert ist. Hmpf…
Close-up of the fascinator – hope you like it – it’s another one of my own. I think that can still be worn in January or February – as long as it’s still winter outside. Nahaufname des Fascinators – der ist selbstgemacht. Ich meine den kann man auch noch gut im Januar oder Februar tragen – solange da draussen noch Winter ist!
And of course this is what I wear when I decorate the tree 😉 Natürlich ist das Bild nicht gestellt – trage sowas immer wenn ich den Baum schmücke 😉

The air is crisp outside and the Christmas markets are back in town. Mulled wine or Glühwein is a drink I enjoy quite often not very much. Too sweet, awful wine as a base and hardly any spices, luke warm in an ungly mug is the harsh reality of many stalls out there. It makes you appreciate „your“ usual one even more. One of my favorite markets was the one in Manchester with the neogothic town hall as a back drop. How quaint!
Sometimes however you want to make your own mulled wine.
This is my recipe:
a bottle of drinkable (dry) red wine
2 cinnamon sticks
3 star anise
3 cloves
1 orange, sliced
2 pods of cardamon
a touch of nutmeg
a couple of pink peppercorns
2-3 tablespoons of muscova (or cane) sugar
A copper kettle would be very appropriate, but actually any kettle will do, even if it won’t impress your guests. Make sure it just simmers and doesn’t get to boil (or else the alcohol will evaporate). To serve put in heatproof glasses (or your assorted collection of Christmas market mugs). Some gingerbread and/ or plums in bacon go rather nicely along. Prost!
Manchester Christmas Market
Draussen wird es wieder klirrend kalt und der Weihnachtsmarkt ist wieder in der Stadt. Glühwein ist eines der Getränke das ich sehr, sehr oft nicht mag. Meist zu süss, mit einem schlechten Wein als Basis, kaum Gewürze und lauwarm in einer hässlichen Tasse ist leider viel zu oft die Realität an so manchem Stand. Man schätzt dann „seinen“ Stand um so mehr, wenn man ihn denn gefunden hat. Einer meiner Lieblingsmärkte war der German Market in Manchester. Das neugotische Rathaus im Hintergrund war einfach eine grandiose Kulisse!
Manchmal mache ich aber auch meinen eigenen Glühwein. Und das ist mein Rezept:
eine Flasche trinkbaren (trockenen) Rotwein
2 Zimtstangen
3 Sternanis
3 Nelken
eine Orange in Scheiben
2 Kardamon-Kapseln
eine Prise Muskat
ein paar Rosa Pfefferkörner
2-3 Esslöffel Muscova oder braunen Rohrzucker
Ein Kupferkessel wäre natürlich sehr adäquat, aber eigentlich tut es irgendein Tops, auch wenn der dann nicht unbedingt die Gäste beeindruckt. Den Glühwein nur erhitzen, nicht aufkochen lassen (sonst verdunstet der Alkohol). Dann in hitzebeständigen Gläsern kredenzen (oder halt der bunten Mischung der Tassen der letzen Weihnachtsmärkte). Etwas Lebkuchen und/ oder Pflaumen im Speckmantel passen da recht gut zu. Cheers!
