One of the things we in the first world got accustomed to is the availablilty of products. Sstrawberries in winter. Roses around the year. As a garden enthusiast (though for quite some time now one without a garden) or better a plant enthusiast I love the seasons. And things are more precious when they are only available for a short time.
I don’t love winter. Winter comes with the rest of the seasons in a set. A bit like a gatecrashing guest. But that makes spring all the lovelier. I love the white carpet of the anemone nemorosa in our beech woods, the lush pink Japanese cherry blossoms, green leaves in general. The scents of a hyacinth field. The dainty lilies-of-the-valley.
One of the hatmakers I admired for quite a while, Frollein von Sofa made this lovely ode to spring. Last week I showed it with darker tones. A highland fling in a wiggle dress. This time I paired my hat with much airier colours. Light greens – a pale pea and a soft pistachio and a striking contrast with the pinkish tartan bag.
The dress comes with pockets. And though I don’t love polka dots the way I used too I really like this one (and its white friend). It is a spring dress, worn with a spring hat. I bought both last year.
Last year I was on quite a bit of a shopping spree. Since the beginning of the year I keep a wardrobe diary so that I’ll keep track of the things I wear and how often I do so. Most of us have come across the tip to turn the hangers around once you have worn something. But for me that wasn’t enough. I wanted to know how much mileage my things get.
I had to make a list first. And yes, I was surprised I have so many things. Dresses mainly. It is nice to have a lot of pretty frocks but it doesn’t really make you a happier person. Or more content. Though I don’t struggle with that. I love clothes. I come from a family of collectors. China, radios, clocks, art, books, plants. Or clothes, shoes, hats and other accessoires. But at some point it got a bit out of hand. So right now I try to focus.
I got a lot of amazing things. But I want to give my things a bit more mileage. And I still have a few things you haven’t seen here on the blog yet. And yes – I have plans to buy a few things to add to my wardrobe.
Hello Spring! The foliage is coming back. Green is sprucing. Time to get this beautiful hat from Frollein von Sofa out. I bought it last year in Berlin. It’s name is Enie, after the gorgeous Enie van de Meiklokjes. Who wears a lot of the Frolleins pretty confections!
I do love my greens. The dress has a glorious pin up style. And with the black blouse underneath it is proper office wear, too. The jacket is from Murek, bought at the Plussize Fashion Days in Hamburg last October.
The tapestry bag is real vintage.
The little hat „only“ has a vintage vibe. But what a vibe. This is spring. I lusted after this hat for a few month and when I was in Berlin I bought it together with another one from the Frollein. In the end we regret the things we didn’t do more.
Alaaf and Helau – the two major traditional celebratory cries for carnival in Germany. For some carnival is worse than the plague. For others more fun than Christmas. I was raised in one of the hotspots of the carnival culture. You can take the girl out of the region, but not qiute the region out of the gal. I cherish this tradition. So much fun. And even in costumes. It’s the best! Haha. Sorry.
„Do you have a costume?“ asked me the architect from Berlin. She and I work together on a project. „One???“ Not quite – it has grown into a small collction. Last year I was Red Riding Hood. 2015 and before (and also this Thursday) a dashing pirate. Miss Piggy and the French Maid are un-documented. For now.
I bought the Geisha costume in 2015. Not for fancy dress occasions but because I wanted a kimono with dramatic sleeves in my size. Amazon suggested it along with the regular loungewear ones.
I love Asia inspired patterns – be it the versatile Anna Scholz kimono dress or LindyBop’s Suzie-Wong wiggle dress. The debate wether this is an appropriate costume or not, is one I will only discuss in person. It will involve a discussion about feminism or rather sexism. Would I wear this if I’d show a group of Japanese around? Probably not – they’d be more excited to see me as Red Riding Hood wearing a Dirndl.
Most „Japanese“ fancy dress up costumes include a decorated whig. But I only do whigs outside. I find the ones I tried before to warm, itchy and thus a nuissance. Carnival isn’t for me about having the greatest custume but about having fun.
So I made an image search and made my own floral crown. A quick job – done in a llittle less than 10 minutes. Not really a facinator, more like a wreath. It os made of some deco cherry blossom twigs (from my basement – bought but never used), a fake orchid from my kitchen and a corsage. Hard to believe – this headgear is quite party resilient and rather danceproof!
Nahaufnahme fürs Make-Up. Pin-Up inspiriert.
Close-up with the pin-up inspired make up. Peaches Belvedere made a great youTube tutorial in German. But I wanted something more partyproof and sweat resistant. It was actually still there at the end of the night. Only the lipsstick needed touching up.

Weggeozen – aber angekommen. Nur nicht zu Karneval. Moved away – but found a new home – apart from carnival.
I always liked hats. Back in the 1990s I wore what best could be called Paddington hats. Yep, like the teddy bear. Wide brim, folded up (sometimes with a hat pin). Before that in my early teens it was newspaper boys caps, a trilby or berets.
The beret is the most consistent hat form in my life. They are easy. You can fold them, roll them up or wear it. Check out RetroChicks blog on how to wear them (on a bad hair day). You can stick it over your whole head when it rains, looks a bit daft but keeps the hair dry. Worn properly it adds a certain chic to an outfit. Paris calling? You bet.
And the colours. Sigh, so many to chose from. Ok, so my basic ones are black and grey. Red is a classic and a favourite, too – though at German train stations some people think you work for Deutsche Bahn when paired with a dark jacket. Been there, done that. The raspberry pink one is another favourite. So cheerful. Tolle Farbe.
A friend recently asked me which colours I don’t have. Burgundy and a mid grey are missing as well as well as a forest green. The ones I have are red, turquoise, orange, raspberry, olive, yellow, winter white, mint, pale pink, baby blue, gold, purple and royal blue, plus a fuzzy leopard one. Quite a collection. Each year I add between one and three to the lot. This winter it was finally a baby blue.
The black one and the organge one are not on the picture.
I prefer a nice heavy quality, though the black one from H&M is rather thin. That has its advantages in Autumn and Spring. Despite milder temperatures it gets chilly in the mornings, or evenings. Train stations, especially smaller ones tend to be drafty places. And I am an avid user of public transport.
And that is basically why I wear the beret – to keep warm. I’d love to wear more exciting headgear on a daily basis but when I think about my bike ride to the office or the train being „surprisingly“ late, it is the trusted French beret that wins hands down most days.
Welcome to my review of my selfmade fascinators or mini hats from 2016. Many thanks to the lovely Katha from Kathastrophal and Lisa from Mein Feenstaub for their „DIY your closet“ project in 2016. This year will be a bit different – more about sewing. But I’ll stick to the old hashtag.

It was Leopard Love last year for Valentine’s Day for me. I bought the material, an old cap on eBay as fake fur. Not sure about that though.
Not exactly a hat or a fascinator. My decorated whig for my Marie-Antoinette styled shepherdess costume for carnival.
It’s September now – and a different uptake on the Dirndl for Oktoberfest Craze with this HellBunny Hermeline skirt. The facinator is made from leftover fabric my taylor gave me after he shortened the hem.
Bird of paradise in this silky peacock dress from LindyBop. Again the hem had to be taken in and some fabric remained.
The grand finale for 2016 was the workshop „Shape up your Hat“ by Ricarda Engelsberger from „Mein wunderbarer Hursalon“. We were quite pleased with the transformation from a boring country trilby to a chic 1950s bandeau hat.
The outfit is nice for a New Year’s Eve party, going to the ballet or a nice concert. Just because people don’t really dress up for occasions doesn’t mean you can’t. So if you want to take at least that little black dress out – do it. Please don’t hesistate to wear or use something. I have so many vintage things that were kept for good and at the end of a life have never been used at all.
This isn’t really a little black dress. It can be formal. But it can be easily dressed down, too. The swan border print makes it a good one to combine with folksy elements. Or a classic 1950s look with a cardigan.
Vintage Bochum
I bought the fascinator in one of my favourite shops in Bochum – the Le Salon Vintage. The Salon is specialised on vintage fashion from the 1920s to 1950s. Like most places I have been to only the accessories fit me – but there is plenty of these: chamring hats, shoes, handbags and gloves in a beautiful setting. Since November you can find Le Salon at Oskar-Hoffmann-Strasse 43. In the back of the shop is Le Rouge – a vintage beauty parlor.

I met Ricarda Engelsberger in June at Ladies Day – the horse racing day with a hat competition of the prestigious Krefeld jockey club. About two month later she invited me to this Workshop. Last week we finally met and it was a one on one supervision. For her not that exeptional as the event is limited to two to three participants anyway.
Ricarda Engelsberger an der Industrienähmaschine. / at the industrial sewing machine.
For Ricarda Engelsberger hat making isn’t a hobby. It is a craft she learned from the ropes, including the hard earned title of a master milliner from the german Chamber of Crafts. Sheproduces model hats and mini series since 1998. Her workshop is in Wuppertal, a historic district called Arrenberg. Here she is also active in the local community to enhance the quarter. Some of you will know Ricarda Engelsberger or her creations from the German magazineVintage Flaneur.
If in Wuppertal… quite cool to take thesuspension railwayagain. Fun fact: we realised that Ricarda and I were neighbours for about 3 years back in the 1990s in another part of town. We lived door to door. The world truly is a small place!
Ricardas Atelier ist klein aber fein. Alles drin was man braucht. Ricarda’s work space is small but neat. Everything to work properly. Well sorted and still with a loving touch to details.
Kleine Demonstration – der Hutweiter aus den 50gern. Die Heizspirale blieb dafür aus. The audio is crap on this one – basically it is a hat stratcher from the 50s. The hot spiral isn’t switched on.
We first spruced up a hat I bought at Oma Klara. Sadly the hat was folded for shipping. Not a way to treat a hat that was kept for good for a lifetime. Ricarda managed to make it shine again and fluffed up the flowers that were flatter as pancakes.
Enough faffing around – you want to know what we did at the workshop.
Also als erstes haben wir uns mal meine Vorlage angeschaut und ich habe Ricarda erklärt was damit prinzipiell passieren soll. First we had a look at my old hat and I explained what I’d like to turn it into.
Ausgangsmodell: biederer Trachtenhut. Bei eBay wegen der Federn erworben. Zu klein. Before: traditional German „country“ hat. Bought on eBay because of the feather pad. Too small to fit my head.
Vision: 1950ger inspirierter Half-Hat oder Cocktailhut im Jagd-Look. Erhalt und Weitervervendung der Original-Garnitur. After: 1950s inspired bandeaux or half hat in a hunting style using the original trimmings
Arbeitsschritte / Steps taken:
Vermessung des Hutes und der Vorlage (oben in der Collage: Leo-Hut mit Rippen) measuring the hat and the model (the leo one with the brown ribs in the collage above)
Erklärung wie ein Half-Hat funktioniert, bzw. konstruiert wird und Überlegung aus wievielen Teilen das Endprodukt betehen soll explanation how to make a half hat and its construction and design approach how many parts the final product will have
Vorlage abschmücken, Ripsbänder abtrennen dismanteling the old hat
Skizzieren der Bestandteile mit Schneiderkreide chalking the parts on the old hat
Ausschneiden und Glattbügeln der Einzelteile der Filzgrundlage cutting and ironing the parts from the felt base
Garniturtest (und Mittagspause) mocking up the decoration and lunchbreak
Zusammenstecken und Vernähen der Filzgrundlage (Ricarda hat den Teil an der Industrienähmaschine übernommen – ich hatte an dem Tag etwas zuviel Schiss davor) pegging and sewing together the felt base (Ricarda took over at the industrial sewing machine – I chickened out on that day)
We made the shape a bit slimmer. Pictured is the final product.
Aufbringen der Garnitur und des alten Etiketts. Alles von Hand. bringing on the trimmings and feathers as well as the old label, All by hand.
Tadaaaaaa! Fertig Job done!
Kaum wiederzuerkennen! Hardly recognizable! On the model. Die feather pad is kept close to the base and arch a little into the forehead. I usually wear discreet earrings, so there will be no conflict with the overhanging trimming.
Und jetzt angezogen! Ein Traum. Ricarda und ich waren sehr begeistert. And now worn. Fits like a dream. Ricarda and I were very excited about the result.

Welcome to the Curvy Christmas Advent Calendar (and New Year’s Eve Countdown) by Katha from Kathastrophal and Ela from Conquore. My day is between Roxy from Do it Curvy and Navabi who is one of the sponsors. I am in every possible a big fan of Christmas: love the cheesy, happy songs, the lights, some of the decorations, the sweets, Stilton (blue cheese), Sherry, Port, mulled wine. And festive dresses!
My shopping companion, the wonderful harpist Nadia Birkenstock nearly keeled over when she saw my find in the January sale – this ugly Christmas Sweater. („Are you nuts?“). Well it was reduced to a fiver and I was adamant and bought it. At my place she admitted that with the green tafetta skirt (which I didn’t bring along when we were shopping) it actually makes a great wacky Christmas outfit.
Like one the quirky RetroChick I do love my kitschy Christmas outfits – and the matching accessories. The simple matte golden kittenheels get a bit of elf or Tinkerbell magic with the red pompom shoe clips. Monty, der Mops (the Pug) put his usual Mini-Santa-Hat hairclip on.
The poinsettia headpiece arrived last year a few days too late and this is the first time it gets worn.
Quite simple but pretty and good for travelling.
So is this the bit with the giveaway?
A few of you who know my blog will probably know I love to make my own fascinators. So here is my give-away for you – a bespoke fascinator. You pick the material and the decoration – it can be a festive or simply a winter one or one for New Year’s Eve.
You decide. The base will be round though. I got frosted berries, mini toffee apples, snowballs and quite a few things more. Have a peek on my pinterest board. (There are vintage and bought hats as well on there.)

Create your perfect look for a perfect designer it-piece.“ A thousand episodes of Shopping Queen and the gals from the ü30-Forum and I take part. with a blog parade. We all show our it-pieces.
So, it’s a bit like on television – best laid plans come to naught. And you end up with something very different. Unfortunately I didn’t get 500€ to go shopping like in the show. But on the other hand I don’t have to have a spanking clean apartment and nobody will faff around in my closet. Although if you want to peek into my wardrobe you can have a look here.
Und die pinke Strumpfhose, die Tartantasche und der Blumenschal sorgen für frische Farbtupfer.w For my outfit I combine and international bloggers favourite the tulle skirt with a peplum top. Both black. I wear a stripey top underneath. Black white and pink is a delightful combination. The pink tights, the tartan bag and the floral scarf add a splash of colour.
I even one applied for the show. Somehow I wasn’t what they were looking for. In the end I was somewhat relieved when they finally came to my city without me.

To quote Marina Sirtis as Counselor Troi in Star Trek Enterprise – The Next Generation „I never met a chocolate I didn’t like.“ I have. Plenty. Rum raisin or anything with coffee, or fruity/ yoghurt/ most cream fillings. „Chocolate to dress“ is the theme od this blog parade by Ines Meyrose. It is about outfits or accessories in brown. Be that milky or super dark chocolate.
And apart from my first summer in the UK, in 2005 – when chocolate was supposed to be the new black – I don’t have a lot of brown things (anymore): a somewhat too small corduroy skirt, a few pairs of shoes or boots and then some hats and fur scarfs. Fortunately accessories are allowed too.
So I decided to forward an outfit that was meant to be for my „Winter Warm January“. I planned to give myself monthly themes in 2017. Let’s see how that’ll work out. The late summer version of the this dress is light and airy. The rich damask pattern has reminiscences of renaissance gowns. And fur trimmings were quite popular then. A sign of luxury and class.
The velvet bag is Italian. With bacelite handles. After I bought it I didn’t wear it for quite a while. To resurrect it these last two months.
I think I look like a 1950s version of a Russian Winter Princess. So, what kind of chocolate do you prefer – milk or dark chocolate?
