DIY your Closet – Reclaimed Fur. Alter Pelz. Neues Leben.

It still feels weird to blog about fashion today in the aftermath of the American election. The world seems to go to hell with a handbasket. Skipping. Throwing reason and facts alike over board. And most of us stand and watch in shock. Surprised. Aghast. Our society splits apart. In times when the acceptance of women, cultural diversity and alternative lifestyles is at an all time high.

Es fühlt sich schon heute etwas komisch an über Mode zu schreiben. Am Tag nach der US Wahl. Die Welt wird sich verändern. Wird unberechenbarer. Vernunft und Fakten für scheinen über Bord gegangen zu sein. Und die viele von uns fassen es nicht. Sind überrascht. Entsetzt. Unsere Gesellschaft driftet immer mehr auseinander. Und das gerade in einer Zeit wo die Akzeptanz von Frauen, kulturelle Vielfalt und alternative Lebensentwürfe noch nie so hoch war wie jetzt.

There are things most of us do and don’t. There is a lot of controversial discussion around various topics. Usually people burn more them than politics. Recently one of the most heated topics in one of the few Facebook groups I really follow was about (fake) fur. For me fur is one of my guilty pleasures. I don’t really like camouflage – I struggle with contemporary military looks in everyday life.

Es gibt Dinge die dir meisten von uns spalten. Kontroverse Diskussionen gibt es zuhauf. Meist brennen Leute dafür mehr als für Politik. Neulich ging eine der erhitztesten Diskussionen in einer Facebook Gruppe der ich folge um Pelz beziehungsweise Kunstpelz. Für mich ist Pelz eines dieser Dinge bei dem ich einen Hauch schlechten Gewissens habe. Camouflage oder moderne Militärlooks zum Beispiel mag ich gar nicht.

But fur feels glamorous. Decadent. Archaic. I am too much a child of the eighties though to fully approve of fur. But you don’t have to. There is fake fur. Most of it is actually polyester.

Der Pelz fühlt sich glamourös an. Dekadent. Archaisch. Ich bin vielleicht zu sehr ein Kind der achtziger Jahre um unbeschwert Pelz genießen zu können. Aber das muss man auch nicht. Es gibt auch Kunstpelz. Und der dem ich begegne ist aus Polyester.

But to be honest I don’t like fake fur that much. I prefer the real thing. And there is lots of it available in the vintage section. Coats, scarfs and hats to name a few. I have a few fur scarves. Mink in grey, blonde and brown. Mock leopard. A rabbit muff. Fur brooches.

Aber wenn ich ehrlich bin, mag ich Kunstpelz nicht sehr. Ich mag das echte. Und davon gibt es viel Secondhand. Vintage. Mäntel, Schals, Hüte, um nur ein paar Beispiele zu nennen. Ich habe einige Pelzschals. Nerz in grau, blond und braun. Falscher Leopard. Ein Muff aus Kaninchen. Pelzbroschen.

But there is another way to wear fur – reclaimed fur. From old or vintage items. Fur that already exists. That is dead for longer than I am alive. From its heydays in the 1950-1970s. Where everyone had to have a fur coat. Dead for 40-70 years. Still in excellent condition. More or less unworn. Kept for special occasions. Be that a hat or a jacket, the material can be salvaged. Upcycled. Turned into something new.

Aber es gibt noch einen anderen Weg Pelz zu tragen: aufgearbeiteten Pelz. Aus alten Beständen, Pelzjacken oder Mänteln. Pelz der schon da ist. Der länger tot ist als ich zum Beispiel lebe. Aus der Blütezeit der 1950ger bis 1970ger Jahre. Als man einfach einen Pelz haben musste. Tot seit 40-70 Jahren. Vieles noch in hervorragendem Zustand. Mehr oder minder ungetragen. Für besondere Gelegenheiten aufbewahrt. Egal ob Hut oder Jacke, das Material kann wieder verwendet werden. Upcycled. Etwas Neues entsteht.

I like to use vintage fur for my fascinators. Mostly from hats or caps. They share frumpiness and an unwearability. For me it is a pleasure to turn a dowdy grannies hat into something as luxurious as the material it is made from. Something flirty and fun.

Ich verwende gerne alten Pelz für meine Fascinators. Meist sind die aus alten Hüten oder Mützen. Sie haben gemein, dass sie altbacken und eigentlich untragbar sind. Es bereitet mir Freude aus einem trutschigen Omahut etwas zu machen, das so luxuriös ist wie das Material selber. Etwas neckisches, das Spaß macht.

This month my DIY your Closest project is a fur fascinator. Made from Persian lamb. Astrakhan. In grey. I got a matching scarf from the 1950s. The hat is younger. Probably from the late 1960s or even the 1970s. It feels strange to cut into a hat on hat is in prime condition. But as they say, you can’t make an omelette without breaking eggs. So I cut up the dowdy old thing and made a fascinator out of it.

Diesen Monat ist mein DIY Your Closet Projekt ein Pelzfascinator. Aus grauem Persianer, oder Karakul. Habe ich einen passenden Schal aus den fünfziger Jahren. Der Hut ist jünger. Wahrscheinlich aus den späten sechzigern oder sogar den siebziger Jahren. Es fühlt sich erst mal merkwürdig an in einen Hut hinein zu schneiden der in einem tadellosen Zustand ist. Aber gehobelt wird, da fallen Späne. Deswegen habe ich es auseinander geschnitten und einen Fascinator daraus gemacht.

Pretty in Peplum – Out in Hamburg

Last weekend the fourth Plussize Fashion Days brought me to Hamburg. Found a great hotel. Planned my outfits carefully. Like always. And a little extra when you know you’ll meet bloggers, fashionistas and people from the plussize industry.
Letztes Wochenende haben mich die vierten Plussize Fashion Days nach Hamburg geführt. Habe ein grossartiges Hotel entdeckt und meine Outfits geplant. Wie immer. Und noch etwas mehr – wie das halt so ist wenn man weiß, das man einige Blogger, Fashionistas und Leute aus der (Plussize) Modebranche trifft.

For my travel days on Friday and Sunday I picked my colourful Beth Ditto lipstick traces dress. Comfy, a bit on the loud side but chic. For the first day of the event however I wanted something sopisticated, more discreet but still stunning. A nod to my vintage style but from a new angle.
Für meine Reisetage am Freitag und Sonntag habe ich mich für mein farbenfrohes Beth Ditto Kleid entschieden. Bequem, etwas laut aber schick. Für den ersten Tag der Plussize Days wollte ich aber etwas diskreteres, dennoch anspruchsvoll und umwerfend. The black chiffon pussy bow blouse goes well with the teal peplum dress, my fake mongolian fur handbag, glitter tights and the velvet kitten pointed ballerinas.
Die schwarze Chiffon Schluppenbluse passt gut zu dem petrolfarbenen Kleid, meiner schwarzen „Flokati“-Fake Fur Tasche, der Glitzerstrumpfhose und den spitzen Kätzchen-Samtballerinas.

Also nice for business with a white shirt underneath. The pumps are actually just a darker shade than the dress. The colour comes out too blueish. It is a proper teal in real life.
Für meinen Job oder die Politik passt auch ein weisses Hemd gut darunter. Die Pumps sind eigentlich nur einige Nuancen dunkler als das Kleid. Dessen Farbe ist auf den Bildern zu blau. Eigentlich ist es mehr petrol (oder dunkeltürkis).

The glitter tights give a bit of an edge to the matte jersey dress and the peplum repeats the lines of the jacket. I had the cape shortened last winter.
Die Glitzerstrumpfhose bildet einen schönen Bruch zu dem matten Jerseykleid. Das Schößchen wiederholt die Linienführung des Blazers. Das Cape habe ich letzten Winter kürzen lassen.

One of my favourite scarfs. So versatile. A little bohoo. A little country. Very classic.
Eines meiner Lieblingstücher. Sehr vielseitig. Etwas Folklore. Etwas Tracht. Sehr klassisch.

As I said – the hotel Europäischer Hof was ace. Faciing the central station. They made fresh waffles and omlettes for breakfast. The waterslide was as fast as hell. They even had a barefoot lift that took you up again to the slide.
Das Hotel Europäischer Hof war grossartig. Genau gegenüber vom Hauptbahnhof. Es gab frische Waffeln und Omlettes zum Frühstück. Die Wasserrutsche war höllisch schnell! Und es gab sogar einen Barfuss-Aufzug der einen wieder nach oben zum Anfang der Rutsche gebracht hat.

Plussize Fashion Days Hamburg 2016 – Beth Ditto Lola Lipstick Dress

I guess I never travelled for so few days with so much luggage like this weekend. The destination were the Plussize Fashion Days by Kurvenrausch in Hamburg. 2016 was the fourth time for the event.
Ich kann ich nicht daran erinnern für so wenige Tage schon mal soviel Gepäck mitgenommen zu haben. Das Ziel waren die Plussize Fashion Days von Kurvenrausch in Hamburg. 2016 war das vierte Event dieser Art.

A themed party, two days of shopping and a Fashion/ Award show. Lots of plussize bloggers and fashion savvy people present. You want to look your best for that. For the travel days I chose my Beth Ditto dress. The Lola in the lipstick print is quite flamboyant.

Eine Mottoparty, zwei Tage zu, shoppen und eine Modenschau mit Preisverleihung. Viele (Plussize) Blogger und modebewusste Frauen. Da will man glänzen. Für die Reisetage habe ich mich für mein Beth Ditto Kleid entschieden. Das Lola mit dem Lippenstiftdruck sticht immer hervor.

Zizzi made a little workshop where the invited bloggers were given the chance to customise their gifted jeans. Like in this pic Nane from Wundercurves.

Zizzi hat einen Workshop angeboten bei denen die geladenen Blogger die Chance hatten Jeans für sich anzupassen. Wie hier Nane von Wundercurves.

But first the new line got introduced. Slim fitted jeans are not really my thing. But I liked a denim carmen top and some floral crepe pants.

Zuerst wurde die neue Kollektion vorgestellt. Slimfit-Jeans sind nicht wirklich mein Ding. Gut gefallen haben mit ein Carmentop aus Jeans und eine Crêpe-Hose mit floralem Muster.

Le “Bomber” dans une silhouette féminisé“ – gnahh. Un vraie challenge pour moi dans le moins consacré à la mobilisation autour du cancer du sein. L’octobre rose.
The feminin styled bomber. Ohhh my. A real challenge for me in this month dedicated to breast cancer awareness. Pinkoctober.

Pour le thème j’ai pensé dans l’instant à ma robe rose avec des points noirs. Pink Lady en bomber. J’ai essayé deux bombers d’Asos. Le noir est trop longue, trop grand. Dommage parce qu’un autre vest „casual“ est une bonne idée.
For that motto I instantly thought about my pink dress with the black dots. Pink lady in a bomber jacket. I tried to bombers form Asos. The black one I which I hoped would be a good addition to my wardrobe. A much needed casual jacket. However it was too long. Too big. Bugger

Le bomber rose est super-coupée pour moi. J’aime la couleur. Un rose blush. Mais ça va pas avec ma robe rose. Pas du tout. Bien. Change du plan. Gris et rose sont toujours bien ensemble.
The pink bomber is actually cut for me. I love the colour. A blush pink. But it didn’t go with the dress I picked. Not at all. Change of plans – grey and pink always go together.

Le col et les manchettes sont noir et blanc. Et j’aime bien des assecoires noir et blanc. Comme cette écharpe d’Alice au pays des merveilles.
The cuffs on this jacket are black and white. And I love black and white accessories. Like this Alice in Wonderland scarf.

Le tweed de la robe est un bon contraste avec le satin très lumineux. Un peu trop lumineux pour moi. Le bibi est dans la même couleur que la veste. Les gants en pied de coq sont nouveaux aussi et ils me plaisent beaucoup.
The tweed fabric of the dress is an excellent contrast to the shiny satin. A bit too shiny for me. The beret picks up the colour from the jacket. The dogtooth gloves are new and I really, really like them.

On the Go: Librarian Chic

Autumn is here – time to celebrate the season. A bit lady of the manor. A bit geeky. Since I spent way too much time at home on sick leave for my personal taste I watched every episode of Downton Abbey and the first season of Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries. I guess it rubbed off a little.
Der Herbst ist da – Zeit die neue Jahreszeit zu begrüssen. Etwas englisches Landhaus. etwas geeky. Seit dem ich viel länger krankgeschrieben bin als mir lieb ist, habe ich jede Episode von Downton Abbey und die erste Staffel von Miss Fisher’s Muerder Mysteries gesehen.

Grüner Samt und Brokat mit etwas Kitsch gemischt. Heute mal ohne Shapewear. Es macht leider einen Unterschied.

Berries, toadstools and an old souvenir brooch on a folded velvet base. I made this fascinator for my Hell Bunny Hermeline skirt.
Beeren, Fliegenpilze und eine alte Andenkenbrosche auf einer Unterlage aus gefaltetem Samt. Diesen Fascinator habe ich für meinen Hell Bunny Hermeline Rock gemacht.

These foxy heels are not the most comfortable. But they are super cute and most times I wear them they get praised.
Die Absatzschuhe mit den Füchsen sind nicht gerade die Bequemsten. Aber sie sind super süß und meistens wenn ich sie trage, bekommen sie Komplimente.

The mini doctor bag is vintage and I think I got it even before or shortly after I was twenty. I know I already have it fo rmore than twenty years.
Die kleine Arzttasche ist Vintage und ich habe seit über 20 Jahren. Entweder vor oder nach meinem zwanzigsten Geburtstag – genau weiss ich das aber nicht mehr.

Okotberfest Craze: Tartan meets Dirndl

So you’d like to go to Oktoberfest but a classic Dirndl is too expensive and the cheap ones too much like a Halloween costume? There are ways to create that look without the full commitment. Either in a cheerful or with a darker note. Another easy way to do it is pick a dress and wear it with an apron. Like Gemma from Retrochick last year in Munich.
Was tun wenn ein Oktoberfest-Besuch ansteht und ein klassisches Dirndl zu teuer ist aber die preiswerten zu sehr nach Karneval aussehen? Es gibt Wege diesen Look zu erzielen ohne direkt aufs Ganze zu gehen. Egal ob in heller oder dunkler. Ein anderer Ansatz ist es ein passendes Kleid auszusuchen und das mit einer Schürze zu tragen. Wie Gemma von Retrochick das letztes Jahr in München gezeigt hat.

Although quite often in the past (and not just the 1950s) women also wore scarfs as aprons. And that is what I did for this outfit. A pretty tartan dress from Hell Bunny with a sweet heart neckline. Combined with a modern oblong scarf, not a square in a traditional folklore pattern.
In der Vergangenheit (und damit meine ich nicht unbedingt die 50ger Jahre) haben Frauen Tücher auch als Schürzen getragen. Und das habe ich mit diesem Outfit getan. Das Tartan-Kleid mit seinem Herzausschnitt ist von HellBunny. Kombiniert habe ich es mit einem Schal in einem klassischen Folkloremuster und nicht mit einem traditionellem, quadratischen Tuch.

The flower wreath or headband emphazises the traditional look. Make sure you get a nice one. Like the one I got from Tate Milinery. The garish ones will remind a lot of people of the ceremonial driving down of cattle from the mountain pastures into the valley in autumn. And you don’t want that. Or maybe you do?
Der Blütenkranz oder vielmehr das Haarband mit Blumenschmuck unterstützt den Trachtenlook. Holt euch etwas wertiges. Wie mein Kranz von Tate Milinery. Die lauten und allzu bunten werden viele Leute an den Almabtrieb erinnern. Und das wollen die wenigsten von uns. Oder vielleicht doch?

Oktoberfest Craze: Dirndl-Love in Venice

O’zapft is! Meine Liebe zu Dirndl und Trachten ist nicht gerade neu. Angefangen hat mein persönliches Revival als ich in England gelebt habe. Auch wenn das Dirndl, das wir so kennen und mögen eigentlich erst in den 1930ger Jahren neu erfunden wurde. Aber richtig traditionell ist nur bedingt meins. Der Look mit den üblichen Rüschenblusen mit Puffärmeln ist mir meist zu viel. Zumindest an mir.
O’zapft is! These are the traditional words that open the Munich Oktoberfest. My infatuation for dirndl and traditional clothing isn’t a new thing. Actually my personal revival started when I still lived in England. Even though the dirndl is a reinvented folkloristic uptake from the 1930s. (Sorry, the easily linkable literature I found is in German). But really traditional isn’t mine anyway. I prefer a look without the ruffled blouses with pouf sleeves.

Auch wenn es mittlerweile recht nette Dirndl unter 150 EUR gibt, ist ein gutes Dirndl kein preiswerter Spass. Viele Gelegenheiten eines zu tragen haben (oder schaffen sich) viele von uns nicht. Deswegen ein weiteres Dirndl Marke Eigenbau. Traditionell ist nur das Samtmieder.
Even if you can get quite nice Dirndls now for unter 150 EUR, good ones don’t come cheap. A lot of us lack the occasions or they don’t create those opportunities to wear one. So here is another self styled dirndl. The only traditional clothing is the velvet corsage.

Das hier ist eine fröhlichere Variante zu der dunklen Version mit meinem Trachtenmieder. Rock und Bluse gehören, wie auch in der anderen Variante, zu den Dingen, die ich im Alltag trage. Die Tasche der Wahl ist eine Clutch aus Raffia.
This is variaton to the dark drindl look with my traditionally styled corsage. Skirt and blouse are part of the things I wear most days. The bag of choice is a raffia clutch.

Der ganze Look hat für mich einen Hauch Rokoko. Der Rock ist von LindyBop mit einem Bordürendruck. Das Thema ist Venedig.

Wieder mal ein „Novelty-Print“ – diesmal mit dem Canale Grande in Venedig.

Die Kette ist Vintage. Die Blumen passen gut zu Trachten und Stickereien.
The necklace is vintage. The flowers remind me of traditional clothing and embroidery.

Die kleine Millefiori-Brosche hingegen bezieht sich auf den Druck des Rockes und passt aber auch gut zum Folklorethema.
The small millefiori brooch is a nod to the venice theme in skirt. But it also as an ethnic or folk vibe.

Das wunderbare Stohhütchen ist von Fräulein von Sofa. Es erinnert mich an reizende Meissner Porzellanschäferinnen. Was wieder an das Rokoko-Motiv anknüpft.
The wonderful little boater is from Fräulein von Sofa. It reminds me of something a Meissen procellain shepherdess would wear. So we got the rokoko motive again.

„In der »Mittelstelle Deutsche Tracht« der Reichsfrauenorganisation entwarf die »Reichsbeauftragte für Trachtenarbeit«, Gertrud Pesendorfer, in den 30er-Jahren das neue germanische Kleid. Dabei orientierte sie sich mitnichten an den regional höchst unterschiedlichen heiligen Festtagstrachten. Die bestanden nicht selten aus mehreren Röcken, meterlangen schweren Stoffen und steifen, teilweise unförmigen, stets hochgeschlossenen Miedern, in denen der weibliche Körper wie in einer Urne steckte. Dazu wurde mitunter ein überdimensionaler Kopfputz getragen.
Stilbildend wurde stattdessen eine reduzierte Tracht, die Pesendorfer aus dem Arbeitskleid entwickelte. Nach der Maxime »weniger ist mehr« »entkatholisierte« und sexualisierte sie ihr Modell. Das Ergebnis: ein kragenloses, dafür tief dekolletiertes Dirndl mit hoher Taille, geschnürtem oder geknüpftem engen Mieder, welches für stramme Haltung sorgte, und einem kurzärmeligen weißen Blüschen, das die nackten Oberarme sehen ließ.“

Golden Forest – Mein Herbstkleid

This dress is a golden riot. I love the kitschy autumn or fall forest print. So pretty you’d love to step into the print right away. I’ll wear this dress probably to death until mid or late November. Because let’s face it – it is a seasonal dress and it waited since January in my closet to get worn.
Dieses Kleid ist ein Traum in Gold und Kupfer. Ich liebe diesen kitschigen Druck eines goldenen Herbstwaldes. So schön, das man am liebsten direkt dort hinein möchte. Wahrscheinlich werde ich bis Mitte/ Ende November ständig dieses Kleid anziehen. Denn, Hand aufs Herz – es ist Jahreszeitlich sehr gebunden und ich freue mich seit Januar darauf es anzuziehen.

It is the very idea of my favourite season. Autumn when nature goes out with a bang in a golden splendour. Soon the mornings will be crips. The days get shorter. I love kicking leaves – but I won’t mind if I have to wait a few more weeks to do that.
Es ist das Klischee meiner liebsten Jahreszeit. Im Herbst wenn die Natur sich mit einem Paukenschlag verabschiedet. Landschaften in Gold, Gelb, Orange und Kupfer. Bald werden die Morgen wieder frisch. Die Tage werden kürzer. Ich liebe es durch die gefallenen Blätter zu stapfen – aber das kann gerne noch ein paar Wochen warten.

Felt fascinator with pompoms in mustard – soon it’ll be cold enough to wear it again.
Für dass Mini-Hütchen aus Filz mit Pompoms wird es bald wieder kühl genug.

The dress is from Retrolicious – like my cat dress with frames and my black- and white newspaper cat dress. Their speciality are (who would have thought) crazy or novelty prints. And the prints are stunning though the dresses themselves are rather simply made. Bought at Modcloth the „“Sights to Season“ dress lacks pockets. Bugger! Guess that’ll get changed soon though.
Das Kleid ist von Retrolicious – wie mein Katzenkleid mit den Bilderrahmen und auch mein Katzenkleid mit dem schwarz-weissen Zeitungsmuster. Die Muster sind sehr spektakulär auch wenn die Kleider selber recht einfach gemacht sind. Gekauft bei Modcloth ist das einzige was diesem Kleid wirklich fehlt Taschen. Aber das lässt sich arrangieren.

On the Go: Tropical Late Summer and Gingham

Outfit number one recently for the office was Laura Byrnes Alfreda Dress from PinUpGirlClothing (in new colours) – combined with some leo prints unlike here where I wore the Hawaiian Parrot pattern last year.

Not sure if that dark lippy is me but Gemma from RetroChick posed the Challenge to try a new lipstick .

Outfit numer two is an old favorite in a new colour: LindyBop’s Colette in Yellow Gingham (now sold out). I blame thee late Summer Sales! A great dress for summer. And yes, I also got this in light blue.

No make-up – a nude day. It was hot and I quite often go bare.

The raffia bag is true vintage and from Fräulein Anders – a great vintage shop in Berlin.

Unfortunately not en route to Paris – only the office!

On the Go – Outfits im Alltag

Ok, ich gebe zu meine Outfits für den (Büro-) Alltag sind nicht unbedingt alltäglich. Ich habe da viele Freiheiten, die ich vorher nicht hatte! Die Idee kam auf, als Elli von Curvy Fashionelli neulich ihre Outfits fürs Büro zeigte. Aber die Diskussion kommt öfters auf – ich trage diese Sachen wirklich. Nicht nur fürs Shooting. Der grosse Unterschied zwischen Blog und Realität ist ich schminke mich selten. Augenbrauen nachziehen – gerne. Aber der Rest? Muss nicht.
Ok, I admit my outfits for every day are not exactly what most people consider every day outfits. Though I do have a lot of liberties where I work! The idea came when Elli from CurvyFashionelli showed her regular looks recently. But I had these discussions bevor. I really wear the dresses I show you on a daily basis. Not just for shootings. The main difference between blog an realtiy is make-up. I do retouch my eybrows but full make-up? Not really. Only when I feel like it.

Ach, und die Hütchen sind auch mehr für Freizeit. Allerdings trage ich die auch mehr und mehr so. Wobei Baskenmützen für mich nicht zu den Hütchen gehören. Die Hütchen trage ich zum Ausgehen, shoppen, manchmal auch zur Arbeit oder wenn ich in der Politik unterwegs bin. Aber weder in der Ratssitzung noch zu Besprechungen.
Oh, an the fascinators or mini-hats are more for my spare time. Though I wear them more and more. I don’t count my berets into that. The hats I wear for a night out, a meal, going shopping, even to work or council. Though I neither wear them during council sessions or in meetings.
