German Curves: One of the Boys – Dandy Style

This month the German Curves are taking a different turn. The theme is „One of the Boys“. To create a more masculin or androgyn look. For me that topic is a blast from the past. Between 16 and 18 I wasn’t just a Sherlockian but also a big fan of the dandy style.
Diesen Monat haben die German Curves ein etwas ungewöhlicheres Thema – es ist „One of the Boys“. Es geht darum ein maskulines oder androgynes Outfit zu schaffen. Für mich ist das ein Ausflug in meine Vergangenheit. Zwischen 16 und 18 war ich nicht nur ein grosser Sherlock-Holmes-Fan, sondern auch begeistert vom Dandy Look.


I used to own a velvet dinner jacket and a cutaway and wore both to school. With hats – bowlers, fedoras, top hats, paper boys caps, waist coats, cravats, ties and bow ties. I had only one skirt. A long black plaited chiffon skirt. I had to smile when they made a comeback last year.
Ich hatte ein schwarzes Samt-Jackett und einen Cutaway und habe beide auch regelmässig zur Schule getragen. Zusammen mit Hüten – Melonen, Trilbies, Zylindern, Kappen, Westen, Krawatten, Halstüchern, Fliegen, Herrenschals. Ich hatte nur einen Rock. Einen langen Faltenrock aus schwarzem Chiffon. Ich musste etwas grinsen als die letztes Jahr ein Comeback hatten.

All in all my style wasn’t very feminin back then. Despite my rather womanly shape. I woudn’t have worn a flouncy scarf with that, but a neat vintage men’s scarf. And I felt big. Quite big. Though I was only a size EU 42/44 (UK 14/16 or US 12/14). But I felt massive. I wish bodypositivity would have met me much earlier in my life.
Alles in allem war damals mein Stil nicht sehr feminim. Trotz meiner sehr weiblichen Form. Ich hätte damals aber nie so ein flatterndes Tuch dazu getragen, dafür einen adretten alten Herrenschal. Obwohl ich damals nur eine Grösse 42/44 trug, kam ich mir dick vor. Richtig dick. Leider war damals Bodypositivity noch kein Ding.

I can still tie a bow tie. I had to ask a friend for the pocket square. Never really used these back in my dandy days. This is a loan from my best friend’s husband. Who really loves his bow ties. My tie is from my dad from the 70s when he really liked to wear suits to the office. Guess that might be why I quite like men in well fitting suits.
Ich kann immer noch eine Fliege binden. Ich musste einen Freund nach einem Einstecktuch fragen. Die waren irgendwie nie meins. Ausgeliehen hat mir das der Mann meiner besten Freundin. Der wiederum ein grosser Fan von fliegen ist. Meine Krawatte ist von meinem Dad aus den 1970gern. Damals hat er sehr gerne Anzüge ins Büro getragen. Wahrscheinlich ist das mit einer der Gründe warum ich Männer in gutsitzenden Anzügen mag.

And what would a proper dandy be without a pocket watch?  I got this one for my 17th birthday.
Was wäre ein anständiger Dandy ohne eine Taschenuhr? Die hier habe ich zu meinem 17. Geburtstag bekommen.

This pocket watch is from my great grand father. As much as I loved it, it didn’t have a lid. For everyday use I used to have a stainless steel one from my grand father. It got broke as the chain didn’t hold and it fell on the ground when I ran to the tram.
Diese Taschenuhr ist von meinem Urgrossvater. So sehr sie mir auch gefiel – ich wollte eine mit Deckel. Für den Alltag hatte ich eine von meinem Opa aus Edelstahl. Leider ging die kaputt als ich mal zur Strassenbahn gerannt bin, sie fiel aus der Westentasche, die Kette hielt nicht und die Uhr landete auf dem Boden.

This is my uncle Albin’s pocket watch. Family lore says the lid got broken when he tossed it behind the oven when the red army came to raid their homes. After his death my aunt gave it to my dad. The two were very close.
Das hier ist die Taschenuhr meines Onkel Albin. Die Familienlegende sagt, der Deckel ging kaputt als er die Uhr hinter den Ofen geworfen hat als die Russen ihr Haus durchsuchten. Nach seinem Tod gab meine Tante meinem Vater die Uhr. Die beiden standen sich sehr nah.

I don’t have many of my old hats from these days anymore. This hat was given to my dad from his sister. It used to belong to her partner. You’ll meet it again in autumn.
Ich habe nicht mehr viele Hüte aus meiner Dandyzeit. Den Hut bekam mein Dad von seiner Schwester. Der gehörte ihrem letzen Lebensgefährten. Den Hut sehr ihr im Herbst wieder.

Back again in Pink Polka-Dots

Miss Kittenheel is back online! A few mishaps and then my blog was gone for a week. But there was also an opportunity in that involuntary break. I had a good thought to remind myself why I do this and what I want.
Miss Kittenheel ist wieder da! Durch die Kombination ein paar unglücklicher Faktoren war mein Blog eine Woche offline. Aber die unfreiwillige Pause hatte auch ihr gutes. Ich habe die Tage genutzt um in mich zu gehen und mir zu überlegen warum ich das alles mache und was ich will.

That looks a bit different to when I first started. Back when I started my blog I had exalted ideas. Of many cooperations. Glittering events. Life like so often turned out differently. I pouted a bit for a while. But not anymore. I made a few cooperations. Some were great fun. A few not so much. However all were educational.
Das sieht mittlerweile etwas anders aus als ich mir das am Anfang vorgestellt hatte. Als ich mit dem Blog angefangen hatte, hatte ich überzogene Vorstellungen. Von ganz vielen Kooperationen. Schillernden Veranstaltungen. Aber das Leben ist oft anders. Ich habe ein wenig geschmollt. Nicht mehr. Ich habe ein paar Kooperationen gemacht. Einige waren toll. Andere nicht so sehr. Gelernt habe ich immer was.

And yes, I have been to some really cool events and places too, because of my blog. I met quite a few fascinating people through blogging and some where I was baffled why they were successful. Don’t give me that diligence crap. with some I struggled  to tell them apart. That is also due to me being a bit of an analphabet when it comes to facial recognition.
Und ja, ich durfte zu einigen tollen Events und Orten wegen des Blogs. Ich habe viele fazinierende oder spannende Menschen durch das Bloggen kennengelernt. Bei manchen habe ich mich gewundert warum sie so erfolgreich waren (oder sind). Das hat nicht immer was mit Fleiss und Einsatz zu tun. Bei manchen hatte ich Probleme sie auseinander zu halten. Das liegt aber auch daran, dass ich ein ziemlicher Gesichtsanalphabet bin und die gleichen Leute öfters kennenlernen kann.

But basically that is not what keeps my blog going. It is the fun, the indulgence and also the responses I get. Sure there are not a lot of comments as they were „before“ on most blogs. But it is the personal feedback that motivates me way more that the fullest goodie bag. It feels ace when you know you are responsible that someone bought and wore her first dress in twenty years.
Aber wenn ich ehrlich bin, dass ist nicht warum ich mit meinem Blog weiter mache. Es macht Spass, ist etwas was mir gut tut und ja, ich mag die Bestätigung.  Es wird auf den meisten Blogs nicht mehr so viel kommentiert wie „früher“. Aber das persönliche Feedback ist trotzdem grossartig und motiviert mich mehr als die prallste Goodie Bag. Es fühlt sich toll an wenn man gesagt bekommt, dass man dafür verantwortlich ist, das sich jemand nach knapp 20 Jahren das erste Kleid kauft, anzieht und sich darin wohl fühlt.

I love it to have a save place where I make all the decisions. Be that styling or design issues, time management, cooperations either with firms or fellow bloggers.  I neither have that freedom in my job as a landscape architect nor in politics.
Ich liebe diesen Ort an dem ich alle Entscheidungen fälle. Egal ob styling oder design, Zeitplanung, Kooperationen mit Firmen oder anderen Bloggern. Diese Freiheit habe ich weder in meinem Job in der Landschaftsarchitektur oder in der Politik. 
 

So the fun will continue!
Der Spass geht also weiter!

This outfit sums me up pretty well. It is quite typical. We got a dress, some basics and some fun things. The basics are the sturdy brogues, the tights, the cropped denim jacket, the black chiffon pussy bow blouse, the beret and the mini messenger bag. The dress is a part of the fun things together with the cat umbrella.
Dieses Outfit ist recht typisch für mich. Da ist ein Kleid, einige Basics und Dinge, die Spass machen. Die Basics sind die Hochfrontpumps, the blickdichte Strumpfhose, die selbstgekürzte Jeansjacke, die schwarze Chiffon-Schluppenbluse, die Baskenmütze und die kleine Umhängetasche. Das Kleid gehört zu den Dingen, die Spass machen – zusammen mit dem Katzenschirm.

Sweet Lipsticks – a summer dress for all seasons

Black is safe. Especially in construction. At least on the planners side. A solid choice for all seasons. Lipsticks are fun. And sexy. And that is the dress too. I have worn it in Berlin for the 2016 Summer fashion week. A good choice.

By the way – theme of the month is black, white and pink. 

Pussy bow blouses are always a bit prim. Even when a little sheer. A whiff of librarians, school marms, the strict secretary. The chiffon softens that somewhat. But the idea still lingers in the back.

I like to wear this to work. Not for meetings though. By the time I publish this I will have worn this look to a political gathering. A friend asked me if I wanted to be her plus one. And I was curious. I wouldn’t wear it to a similar event of my own party. But after a change of plans it was either wear it all day today or get changed before I leave work. And I couldn’t be arsed to do that.

The pattern is ace!

Ok, looking back I stood out. But not in a bad way. I think I prefer the „all season“ or winter version to the summmer style. What about you?

FrenchCurves: Velours – Velvet – Samt

C’est encore le 16me du mois et le temps pour le French Curves. Ce mois ça me fait grand plaisir d’être part dans le challenge.Aujourd’hui le thème est le velours. Un matériel ancien. Du rois. De la noblesse. Associé avec pompe, la demi monde, le théâtre.
It is once more the 16th of the months and time for the French Curves. Each month it gives me great pleasure to be part of the challenge. Today our theme is velvet. Velvet is an ancient material. Of kings. Of the nobility. Associated with pomp, the demi Monde, of the theatre.


Je n’ai pas beaucoup des choses en velours dans ma garde-robe. La robe est du Marks & Spencer, achetée en 2008. Le violet est plus sombre dans la vie que dans les photos. 
I don’t have many velvet things in my wardrobe. This dress is from Marks & Spencer. I bought it in 2008. The violet is darker in real life than on these pics.

Le violet est aussi une couleur des pierres précieuses.Comme le foulard de Boden. Qui est un part de son héritage clothing. Avec des couleurs traditionnelles, une composition de velours en deux couleurs, soie brute, satin et tweed.
Violet or rather amethyst is one of the jewel colours. Like the scarf from Boden’s heritage line. A composition of two tones of velvet, raw silk, satin and tweed in traditional colours.

La couronne est „vrai vintage“. Un demi chapeau américain des années 1950. J’adore les chapeaux vintage. Ce jours j’ai une petite collection. Un mix de chapeaux des années 1950 (la plus grande part) et quelques des 1960 et des Fascinateurs nouveaux. Beaucoup de mes Fascinateurs moderne j’ai fait moi-même.
The velvet crown is real vintage. A half hat from the 1950s. I so love my vintage hats. I even got quite a collection these days. A mix from hats mainly from the 1950s, few from the 1960s and new Fascinators. I made at least half of them myself.

Bees, Bugs and Shades of Green

Some time ago – almost two years back I decided I need more casual clothes. This sweatshirt I got in a facebook group is one of my wardrobe updates to achieve this. But then I got lots of rather showy semi-formal gear. That can be toned down and worn under the week, too. Such a shame to let it gather dust in the closet.
Vor einiger Zeit – es war vor knapp zwei Jahren fiel mir auf, dass ich mehr legere Kleidung brauche. Dieses Sweatshirt habe ich in einer Facebook Gruppe gekauft und es gehört zu meinen Einkäufen um dieses Ziel zu erreichen. Andererseits habe ich sehr viel eher formelle Kleidung. Die kann man aber auch alltagstauglicher machen. Denn all diese schönen Sachen sind viel zu schade um im Kleiderschrank zu verstauben.

The first look is LindyBop’s taffetta skirt in a lovely shiny emerald. The artifial silk has a nice stiff quality. It doesn’t need additional padding underneath. For New Year’s Eve I have worn this the way it was meant to be worn – as a party skirt.
Der erste Look ist LindyBops Taftrock in Smaragdgrün. Die Kunstseide hat eine schöne steife Qualität. Der Rock brauch keine Zusätzliche Unterstützung für einen guten Stand. Zu Silvester hatte ich den Rock kombiniert wie er eigentlich getragen werden soll – mit einem festlichen Outfit.

The sweatshirt is embroidered with bees and bugs. I love the contrast of the fancy embellishment and the sporty jersey.
Das Sweatshirt ist mit Bienen und Käfern bestickt. Ich mag den Kontrast dieser aufwendigen Verzierungen und dem sportlichen Stoff des Oberteils.

Shiny, shiny – the golden wings in the embroidery really pop out and compliment the golden quilted skirt on this drab day. The boucle scarf picks up the vibrant emerald of the tights. Black details round up this look. The skull cap hat is vintage.
Einfach glänzend – die goldenen Flügel in der Stickerei stechen hervor und ergänzen perfekt den gesteppten goldenen Rock an diesem trüben Tag. Der Boucleschal greift das leuchtende Grün der Strumpfhose auf. Schwarze Details runden das Outfit ab. Der Hut ist ein Original aus den 1950ger Jahren. 

For the French curves pics in December the light didn’t do this skirt justice.This glum day however really highlights the quilted texture.
Bei den Aufnahmen für die French Curves im Dezember war das Licht etwas schwieriger. An diesem finsteren Tag kommt die abgesteppte Textur des Rockes hervorragend zur Geltung. 

Black opaque tights probably make this outfit a bit more suited for everyday wear. The golden skirt stands out though. But like this it can get more mileage apart from cocktail dos.
Schwarze blickdichte Strumpfhosen würden dieses Outfit alltagstauglicher machen. Der goldene Rock ist eine Rampensau und fällt wirklich auf. Aber so kombiniert bekommt der Rock mehr Auslauf als nur für formelle Anlässe.

Just for the record – I do tend to wear coats and jackets in winter.
Nur mal so – ich trage natürlich draussen auch Mäntel oder Jacken.

Now this is a real no make-up look. Without any make-up. No mascara. No lipstick. Just me. I usually don’t wear make-up for work. I do dress up for work like this. When I don’t have a meeting. Initially I bought this sweatshirt for this skirt.
Das hier ist ein echter „No Make-Up“-Look. Kein Make-Up, keine Wimperntusche. Kein Lippenstift. Alles naturbelassen. Aber ich schminke mich selten für einen Tag im Büro. Zur Arbeit ziehe ich mich so der ähnlich an. Ausser bei Besprechungen. ursprünglich habe ich das Sweatshirt für diesen Rock gekauft.

My Hats: Colourful Berets – Baskenmützen in allen Farben

I always liked hats. Back in the 1990s I wore what best could be called Paddington hats. Yep, like the teddy bear. Wide brim, folded up (sometimes with a hat pin). Before that in my early teens it was newspaper boys caps, a trilby or berets.
Hüte mochte ich schon immer. Damals in den 1990gern habe gerne das getragen, was man am besten als Paddington-Hüte bezeichnen kann getragen. Genau wie der Teddybär. Mit breiter Krempe, zum Teil mit einer Hutnadel hochgesteckt. Davor in meinen frühen Teenie Jahren waren es entweder Zeitungsjungen-Kappen, Bogart-Hüte oder Baskenmützen.
The beret is the most consistent hat form in my life. They are easy. You can fold them, roll them up or wear it. Check out RetroChicks blog on how to wear them (on a bad hair day).  You can stick it over your whole head when it rains, looks a bit daft but keeps the hair dry. Worn properly it adds a certain chic to an outfit. Paris calling? You bet.

 Die Baskenmütze ist die Hutform, die mich am kontinuierlichsten in meinem Leben begleitet. Sie sind unkompliziert. Man kann sie aufrollen oder falten oder einfach anziehen. RetroChick hat auf ihrem Blog schön gezeigt wie man sie tragen kann – auch wenn die Frisur mal nicht so sitzt. Und dann kann man sie sich natürlich noch komplett über den Kopf ziehen, wenn es regnet. sieht doof aus, hält aber die Haare trocken. Normal angezogen haben sie immer einen gewissen (Pariser) Chic.

And the colours. Sigh, so many to chose from. Ok, so my basic ones are black and grey. Red is a classic and a favourite, too – though at German train stations some people think you work for Deutsche Bahn when paired with a dark jacket. Been there, done that. The raspberry pink one is another favourite. So cheerful.
Und die Farben. Hach, es gibt so viele. Meine Basics sind Schwarz und Grau. Rot ist auch ein Klassiker und ein Favorit. Allerdings als Bahnnutzerin muss man aufpassen, dass man am Bahnhof nicht für den Gleisvorstand oder den Schaffner gehalten wird – gerade in Kombination mit einer dunkelen Jacke. Ist mir schon einige Male passiert. Die himbeerfarbene gehört auch zu den Lieblingen. Tolle Farbe.
 

A friend recently asked me which colours I don’t have. Burgundy and a mid grey are missing as well as well as a forest green. The ones I have are red, turquoise, orange, raspberry, olive, yellow, winter white, mint, pale pink, baby blue, gold, purple and royal blue, plus a fuzzy leopard one. Quite a collection. Each year I add between one and three to the lot. This winter it was finally a baby blue.

Eine Freundin fragte mich von einiger Zeit, welche Farben mir denn noch fehlen. Weinrot, Mittelgrau und ein Tannengrün. Ich habe welche in Rot, Türkis, Orange, Himbeere, Oliv, Gelb, Wollweiss, Mint, Baby- und Royalblau, Gold, Lila und eine in Leo-Angora. Eine umfangreiche Sammlung. Jedes Jahr kommen ein bis drei dazu. Diesen Winter war es endlich die in Babyblau.

The black one and the organge one are not on the picture. 

I prefer a nice heavy quality, though the black one from H&M is rather thin. That has its advantages in Autumn and Spring. Despite milder temperatures it gets chilly in the mornings, or evenings. Train stations, especially smaller ones tend to be drafty places. And I am an avid user of public transport.
Eigentlich bevorzuge ich eine schöne, schwere Qualität. Meine schwarze von H+M ist recht dünn. Das hat Vorteile im Herbst und im Frühjahr. Dann kann es trotz ansonsten milder Temperaturen morgens oder abends in recht kühl sein. Bahnhöfe, besonders kleinere Stationen sind recht zugige Orte – und ich eine regelmässiger Fahrgast.


And that is basically why I wear the beret – to keep warm. I’d love to wear more exciting headgear on a daily basis but when I think about my bike ride to the office or the train being „surprisingly“ late, it is the trusted French beret that wins hands down most days.
Und das ist genau der Grund warum ich so gerne Baskenmützen trage – um warm zu bleiben. Ich würde im Alltag gerne aufregendere Hüte tragen. Aber wenn ich an meine Fahrt zur Arbeit denke oder der Zug mal wieder „ausnahmsweise“ zu spät kommt, ist es die gute alte Baskenmütze, die mich immer wieder warm hält.

DIY your Closet: Oktoberfest Craze Hat Workshop

Mein Jahr bei DIY your Closet hat ein würdiges Finale gefunden – den Hutworkshop Shape up your Hat!  der inspirierenden Ricarda von Mein wunderbarer Hutsalon aus Wuppertal. Aus einem alten Trachtenhut habe ich unter sachkundiger Anleitung für meine Oktoberfest Craze Reihe einen rasanten Cocktailhut im Stil der 1950ger Jahre gemacht.

My year with DIY your Closet found a worty finale – the hat workshop Shape up your Hat! by the inspiring Ricarda from Mein wunderbarer Hutsalon (my wonderful hat shop – a pun on the German title of the 1980s film my beautiful launderette). Under her masterful supervision I turned a boring country hat into a 1950s inspired cocktail hat for my own series Oktoberfest Craze.

Ricarda Engelsberger habe ich im Juni beim Ladies Day – dem Pferderennen mit Hutwettbewerb des traditionsreichen Krefelder Rennclubs kennengelernt. Knapp zwei Monate später hat sie mich zu diesem Workshop eingeladen. Letztes Wochenende fand dann eine eins zu eins Betreuung statt. Das ist kein Sonderfall. In ihrem Atelier ist die Teilnahme von vorneherein auf zwei bis drei Personen begrenzt.

I met Ricarda Engelsberger in June at Ladies Day – the horse racing day with a hat competition of the prestigious Krefeld jockey club. About two month later she invited me to this Workshop. Last week we finally met and it was a one on one supervision. For her not that exeptional as the event is limited to two to three participants anyway.

Für Ricarda Engelsberger ist das Hütemachen kein Hobby. Die Modistin hat ihr Handwerk von der Pike auf gelernt, inklusive Meistertitel. Sie fertigt Modellhüte und Kleinserien seit ca. 1998. Das Atelier ist in Wuppertal am Arrenberg, einem Gründerzeitquartier. Dort bringt Ricarda sich auch mit ihrem Atelier beim Verein Aufbruch am Arrenberg ein. Einige von Euch kennen Ricarda Engelsberger oder zumindest ihre Kreationen aus dem Vintage Flaneur.

For Ricarda Engelsberger hat making isn’t a hobby. It is a craft she learned from the ropes, including the hard earned title of a master milliner from the german Chamber of Crafts. She produces model hats and mini series since 1998. Her workshop is in Wuppertal, a historic district called Arrenberg. Here she is also active in the local community to enhance the quarter. Some of you will know Ricarda Engelsberger or her creations from the German magazine Vintage Flaneur.

Wenn man schon in Wuppertal ist… Sehr cool – nach ewigen Zeiten mal wieder Schwebebahn gefahren. Fun Fact: Ricarda und ich haben festgestellt dass wir ca. 3 Jahre in den 1990gern Nachbarn in Ober-Barmen waren. Wir haben Tür an Tür gewohnt. Die Welt ist ein Dorf!
If in Wuppertal… quite cool to take the suspension railway again. Fun fact: we realised that Ricarda and I were neighbours for about 3 years back in the 1990s in another part of town. We lived door to door. The world truly is a small place!

Wir haben erst noch kurz einen Hut, den ich bei Oma Klara gekauft habe aufgearbeitet. Leider wurde der Hut beim Versand gefaltet! Da wird ein Teil ein Leben lang in Ehren gehalten und kommt verbeult an um Porto zu sparen. Traurig. Die Blüten waren auch flacher als jeder Pfannkuchen. Jetzt strahlt er dank Ricarda wieder!
We first spruced up a hat I bought at Oma Klara. Sadly the hat was folded for shipping. Not a way to treat a hat that was kept for good for a lifetime. Ricarda managed to make it shine again and fluffed up the flowers that were flatter as pancakes.

Also als erstes haben wir uns mal meine Vorlage angeschaut und ich habe Ricarda erklärt was damit prinzipiell passieren soll.
First we had a look at my old hat and I explained what I’d like to turn it into.

Ausgangsmodell: biederer Trachtenhut. Bei eBay wegen der Federn erworben. Zu klein.

  • Vermessung des Hutes und der Vorlage (oben in der Collage: Leo-Hut mit Rippen)

Kaum wiederzuerkennen! Auf dem Modell. Die Federn liegen eng an und gehen etwas in die Stirn. Da ich fast immer nur sehr diskreten Ohrschmuck trage wird es keinen Konflikt an den überhängenden Enden der Kordel geben.
Hardly recognizable! On the model. Die feather pad is kept close to the base and arch a little into the forehead. I usually wear discreet earrings, so there will be no conflict with the overhanging trimming.

About DIY your Closet
In dem Projekt DIY your Closet geht es jeden zweiten Sonntag darum Dinge selber zu machen, zu upcyclen oder „customisen“ (anzupassen). Diesen Monat presche ich etwas vor. DIY your Closet is about making your own things or in my case to upcylce or customise. Usually every second Sunday – this month I am ahead of schedule. Many thanks to the lovely Katha from Kathastrophal and Lisa from Mein Feenstaub for their „DIY your closet“project. On Katha’s side is (from Sunday morning)  the blob hop with the other participants as well as on Lisa’s site.

Bochum Express: Tourist at Home

Wart ihr schon mal Tourist in der eigenen Stadt? Für mein Blog habe ich vor zwei Wochen den Besuch des Stadtmarketings aus Hamburg begleiten dürfen. Und in der Dezemberausgabe des Magazin BoMag gibt es auch ein Interview mit mir. Darüber aber demnächst mehr an anderer Stelle. Nach einem Sekt ging es auf einen kleinen Stadtrundgang und danach zum Fliegenden Weihnachtsmann. Rechts die Lady in Red bin ich. An dem Tag ging ein kalter Wind durch die Stadt – der Besuch aus Hamburg fühlte ich direkt heimisch.

Mein Outfit für den ersten Tag – und es war ein langer. Bevor die Hamburger kamen gab es noch Verpflichtungen in der Kommunalpolitik und einen Blogpost zu schreiben. misskittenheel-vintage-plussize-pinup-lindybop-vanessa-wiggledress-lace-tights-06

Nach dem Fliegenden Weihnachtsmann ging es zunächst noch Essen und dann zu Urbanatix. Urbanatix vereint Streetart mit Akrobatik. Es war eine grossartige Show und ein grossartiger Erfolg bei den Gästen. Hier gibt es einen kleinen Vorgeschmack:

Am Sonntag bekamen wir eine eine gute Führung und ein fantastisches Konzert geboten. Das ist der Zeitpunkt an dem ich Kreide fresse. Ich habe mal zu den Gegnern des Musikforums gehört. Bei einer Baustellenführung Anfang des Jahres fiel mir auf, dass das alles nichts nutzt. Das Zentrum ist gebaut. Es ist toll geworden. Ich hoffe es wird ein voller Erfolg. Die Akustik ist ein Traum. Die Lage direkt um die Ecke zum Bermudadreieck und vielen Bars und Restaurants ist auf jeden Fall nicht verkehrt.

Mild, aber windig und eine prima Gelegenheit, vielleicht die letzte in diesem Jahr, den bunten Trenchcoat auszuführen.

Das waren zwei tolle Tage mit einem hervorragenden Programm: ich sage noch einmal hier danke dass ich dabei sein durfte!

PS: dieses Wochenende kommt der Bochum Express wieder in die Stadt. Der Besuch aus Stuttgart bekommt eine Stadtrundführung aber es geht als Highlight in Starlight Express. Diesmal bin ich nicht mit von der Partie – aber das Programm wird auch sicherlich gefallen!
Psssst – der Rock ist eine kleine Sneakpreview. Den würde ich zum Musical anziehen. Allerdings nicht mit dem Weihnachtspullover. Gesehen habe ich ihn an Elli von Curvy Fashionelli und sie hat ihn mir dankenswerterweise geliehen (bevor ich ihn mir gekauft habe). Ich finde den perfekt für einen den Besuch im fulminanten Musical von Andrew Lloyd-Webber.

Am Rückreisetag bekommen die Stuttgarter noch eine Stadionführung – das Blau-Weisse-Kleid kennt den Ort recht gut. Leider habe ich diese Woche keine Zeit dafür. Das Bild hier ist vom Sommer. Aufgenommen als ich Stadtradelstar war. Ich hoffe den Stuttgartern hat es so gut wie den Hamburgern in Bochum gefallen. Mir hat die Zeit mit den Gästen Lust gemacht Bochum noch besser kennen zu lernen. Manchmal tut es gut etwas vertrautes mit fremden Augen zu sehen.

Work, Politics and Family – Fein Gemacht!

When I got this dress I didn’t expect it to get the amount of mileage it already did. It is quite good for more formal occasions – meetings at work with clients, political gatherings and council sessions or my dad’s 70th birthday. Or in this case a party meeting. Next year we will have two major elections. And today we had to elect delegates and a candidate for our consituency (or electoral district). All fortunately without drama. But I still had to get up far too early for my taste. And it feels like I had as much coffee as things to vote for. And when your cup matches the tights you can use it as a prop.
Als ich mir dieses Kleid geholt habe, hatte ich nicht erwartet das ich es so oft anziehen würde. Es hat schon einiges erlebt – Besprechungen mit Bauherren, politische Treffen und eine Ratssiztung und den siebzigsten Geburtstag meines Vaters. Heute war es erst auf einem Kreisparteitag. Nächstes Jahr ist in NRW Landtagswahl und im Herbst Bundestagswahl. Ein Superwahljahr. Es ging daran einen Kandidaten aufzustellen und ein paar Delegierte zu bestimmen. Zum Glück ohne grosses Drama und lange Reden. Gefühlt hatte ich genausoviel Kaffee, wie Dinge über die ich abstimmen durfte. Und da der Pappbecher die richtige Farbe hat (und der Kaffee noch warm war) durfte der mit aufs Bild.

This is a lined cotton dress with a hint of stretch. A 1950s inspired wiggle dress. I think it would also be quite nice on a date – though better without the wooly thermal shirt underneath the chiffon blouse. Like for the French Curves this week I wear beige opaque tights under the dark red lace ones. Doesn’t show but keeps you toasty.
Das ist ein Baumwollkleid mit einem Hauch vin Stretch. Im Stil der 1950ger Jahren  – Repro – kein Original. Für ein Date wäre es auch ganz nett – da würde ich aber das Wollhemd darunter weglassen. Wie schon diese Woche für die French Curves trage ich eine blickdichte beige Strumpfhose unter der roten. Sieht man nicht, hält aber warm.

Coffee with an espresso shot – I leave the earl grey tea (hot) to the captain. All in all a good outfit from „work to play“ or at least from politics to blogging. I spend the rest of the day along Bochum Tourism’s guests from Hamburg. But more about this on a later day or glimpses here on my Facebook page.
Kaffee mit einem Espresso obendrauf – den Earl Grey Tee (heiss) überlasse ich dem Kaptän. Alles in allem ein guter Look für formaleres und privates. DIY your Closet – Reclaimed Fur. Alter Pelz. Neues Leben.

It still feels weird to blog about fashion today in the aftermath of the American election. The world seems to go to hell with a handbasket. Skipping. Throwing reason and facts alike over board. And most of us stand and watch in shock. Surprised. Aghast. Our society splits apart. In times when the acceptance of women, cultural diversity and alternative lifestyles is at an all time high.
Es fühlt sich schon heute etwas komisch an über Mode zu schreiben. Am Tag nach der US Wahl. Die Welt wird sich verändern. Wird unberechenbarer. Vernunft und Fakten für scheinen über Bord gegangen zu sein. Und die viele von uns fassen es nicht. Sind überrascht. Entsetzt. Unsere Gesellschaft driftet immer mehr auseinander.  Und das gerade in einer Zeit wo die Akzeptanz von Frauen, kulturelle Vielfalt und alternative Lebensentwürfe noch nie so hoch war wie jetzt.
There are things most of us do and don’t. There is a lot of controversial discussion around various topics. Usually people burn more them than politics. Recently one of the most heated topics in one of the few Facebook groups I really follow was about (fake) fur. For me fur is one of my guilty pleasures. I don’t really like camouflage – I struggle with contemporary military looks in everyday life.

Es gibt Dinge die dir meisten von uns spalten.  Kontroverse Diskussionen gibt es zuhauf. Meist brennen Leute dafür mehr als für Politik. Neulich ging eine der erhitztesten Diskussionen in einer Facebook Gruppe der ich folge um Pelz beziehungsweise Kunstpelz. Für mich ist Pelz eines dieser Dinge bei dem ich einen Hauch schlechten Gewissens habe. Camouflage oder moderne Militärlooks zum Beispiel mag ich gar nicht.

But fur feels glamorous. Decadent. Archaic. I am too much a child of the eighties though to fully approve of fur. But you don’t have to. There is fake fur. Most of it is actually polyester.
Der Pelz fühlt sich glamourös an. Dekadent. Archaisch. Ich bin vielleicht zu sehr ein Kind der achtziger Jahre um unbeschwert Pelz genießen zu können. Aber das muss man auch nicht. Es gibt auch Kunstpelz. Und der dem ich begegne ist aus Polyester.
But to be honest I don’t like fake fur that much. I prefer the real thing. And there is lots of it available in the vintage section. Coats, scarfs and hats to name a few. I have a few fur scarves. Mink in grey, blonde and brown. Mock leopard. A rabbit muff. Fur brooches.

Aber wenn ich ehrlich bin, mag ich Kunstpelz nicht sehr. Ich mag das echte. Und davon gibt es viel Secondhand. Vintage. Mäntel, Schals, Hüte, um nur ein paar Beispiele zu nennen. Ich habe einige Pelzschals. Nerz in grau, blond und braun. Falscher Leopard. Ein Muff aus Kaninchen. Pelzbroschen.

But there is another way to wear fur – reclaimed fur. From old or vintage items. Fur that already exists. That is dead for longer than I am alive. From its heydays in the 1950-1970s. Where everyone had to have a fur coat. Dead for 40-70 years. Still in excellent condition. More or less unworn. Kept for special occasions. Be that a hat or a jacket, the material can be salvaged. Upcycled. Turned into something new.

Aber es gibt noch einen anderen Weg Pelz zu tragen: aufgearbeiteten Pelz. Aus alten Beständen, Pelzjacken oder Mänteln. Pelz der schon da ist. Der länger tot ist als ich zum Beispiel lebe. Aus der Blütezeit der 1950ger bis 1970ger Jahre. Als man einfach einen Pelz haben musste. Tot seit 40-70 Jahren. Vieles noch in hervorragendem Zustand. Mehr oder minder ungetragen. Für besondere Gelegenheiten aufbewahrt. Egal ob Hut oder Jacke, das Material kann wieder verwendet werden. Upcycled. Etwas Neues entsteht.

I like to use vintage fur for my fascinators. Mostly from hats or caps. They share frumpiness and an unwearability. For me it is a pleasure to turn a dowdy grannies hat into something as luxurious as the material it is made from. Something flirty and fun.

Ich verwende gerne alten Pelz für meine Fascinators. Meist sind die aus alten Hüten oder Mützen. Sie haben gemein, dass sie altbacken und eigentlich untragbar sind. Es bereitet mir Freude aus einem trutschigen Omahut etwas zu machen, das so luxuriös ist wie das Material selber. Etwas neckisches, das Spaß macht.

This month my DIY your Closest project is a fur fascinator. Made from Persian lamb. Astrakhan. In grey. I got a matching scarf from the 1950s. The hat is younger. Probably from the late 1960s or even the 1970s. It feels strange to cut into a hat on hat is in prime condition. But as they say, you can’t make an omelette without breaking eggs. So I cut up the dowdy old thing and made a fascinator out of it.

Diesen Monat ist mein DIY Your Closet Projekt ein Pelzfascinator. Aus grauem Persianer, oder Karakul. Habe ich einen passenden Schal aus den fünfziger Jahren. Der Hut ist jünger. Wahrscheinlich aus den späten sechzigern oder sogar den siebziger Jahren. Es fühlt sich erst mal merkwürdig an in einen Hut hinein zu schneiden der in einem tadellosen Zustand ist. Aber gehobelt wird, da fallen Späne. Deswegen habe ich es auseinander geschnitten und einen Fascinator daraus gemacht.

In dem Projekt DIY your Closet geht es jeden zweiten Sonntag darum Dinge selber zu machen, zu upcyclen oder „customisen“ (anzupassen). Diesen Monat presche ich etwas vor. DIY your Closet is about making your own things or in my case to upcylce or customise. Usually every second Sunday – this month I am ahead od schedule. Many thanks to the lovely Katha from Kathastrophal and Lisa from Mein Feenstaub for their „DIY your closet“project.
