Bonjour d’Alsace – plus size princess on tour

There are places that look like right out of a fairy tale or it’s Disney version. The Alsace has quite a number of places as pretty as a picture. Itterswiller is quite a small place. But I had a hard time not bursting into song and skipping along the main road signing „little town“ from Beauty and the Beast expecting the villagers to sing along „bonjour“.
Manche Orte sehen aus wie aus dem Märchen oder zumindest wie die Disney Version. Im Elsass gibt es recht viele solcher zutiefst entzückender Orte. Itterswiller ist einer davon. Ziemlich klein sogar. Trotzdem fiel es auch mir schwer nicht loszusingen und die Hauptstrasse entlang zu hüpfen und „little town“ aus Beauty and the Beast zu singen – in freudiger Erwartung das die Anwohner einstimmen.

Trouble is if I burst into song the locals wouldn’t be that friendly. Less likely to sing along. There’d be no dancing either. I am more the type to sing raunchy songs in a tavern with my voice. Walt would spiral in this grave. Anyway – I felt like a Disney princes in the making. Either in disguise or before she meets Prince Charming.
Nun, wenn ich anfangen würde, wäre das Dorf nicht ganz so begeistert. Sie würden auch nicht anfangen zu tanzen. Ich bin mit meiner Stimme besser geeignet für anrüchige Lieder in einer verrauchten Kaschemme. Walt würde in seinem Grab rotieren. Anyway – ich kam mir trotzdem wie eine Disney Prinzessin vor. The Hotel Kieffer was a splendid backdrop. What a match to my dress. Guess next time I’ll come with the parents we’ll give it a try. The rooms on the website look promising, too. We had lunch at Hotel Arnold’s Winstub. Food was lovely. Must recook the „Palette à la diable à l’alsacienne“ – smoked pork in a mustard sauce – recipe in French.
Das Hotel Kieffer war ein wunderbarer Hintergrund. Perfekt auf mein Kleid abgestimmt. Nächstes Mal wenn ich mit Eltern unterwegs bin sollten wir das mal ausprobieren. Die Zimmer auf der Webseite sahen sehr gut aus. Lunch hatten wir in der Winstub des Hotel Arnold. Das Essen war hervorragend. Ich muss demnächst mal mein „Palette à la diable à l’alsacienne“ – Schäuffele, ähnlich wie Kasseler in Senfsauce, Rezept auf Deutsch,  nachkochen.

Bisous d’Alsace – Holidays with the Eiffel Tower Dress

A few weeks ago I went with my cousin to the beautiful Alsace. Always good fun for a visit, excellent food and wine and the vinyards and villages are ever so pretty. Shame on me I didn’t take more picutes in Sélestat. I also didn’t take a lot of pics in the Europapark on the other side of the border in Germany.
Vor einigen Wochen war ich mit meiner Cousine im romantischen Elsass. Immer eine Reise wert mit hervorragendem Essen und Wein. Die Weinberge und die Dörfer sind einfach wunderschön. Ich habe nur ein paar Bilder in Sélestat gemacht – vielleicht war ich schon zu oft da. Auch vom Europapark, der nicht weit von der französischen Grenze ist, gibt es nicht viele Bilder.

But there are a lot of pics with me wearing my new LindyBop Vanessa Dress in Navy. With lots of flowers and Eiffel towers. Excuse the bad rhyme. It surely shows a lot of cleavage. But I love it. The pattern is fun, but not that obvious. And matching it with red accessories feels quite natural.
Dafür gibt es aber viele Bilder von mir mit meinem neuen LindyBop Vanessa Kleid in Dunkelblau. Mit ganz vielen Eiffeltürmen und Blumen. Das Muster macht Spass ist aber nicht zu offensichtlich. Und irgendwie musste das mit ein paar roten Accessoires kombiniert werden.

French Curves: Poolside et Playsuit

L’été et le swimming pool (ou la piscine/ plage/ lac/ fleuve) sont une combinaison extra. Quand le soleil brille dur, la chaleur danse sur l’asphalt baigner (ou même nager) est pour moi à meilleure chose pour se fraîchir. Dehors le pool je préfère de rester sur l’ombre.
Summer and pools are always a good idea – even if the pool is the beach, by the lake, a river or a lido. When the sun shines mercilessly and the heat danses on the tarmac I love to go for a dip (or even swimming) to cool me down. Outside the pool I prefer to stay in the shade.

Voilà mon maillot de bain traditionnel. L’année avant j’ai trouvé une très jolie et rétro robe de bain. Super-chouette dehors l’eau. Mouillé comme un sac. Pas bien dans le courant. Et si on quitte l’eau – ce n’est pas „drip-drip“ mais une petite deluge.
This is my much loved traditional bathing suit. Last year I found a very pretty and retro bathing dress. Super cute outside the water. Wet like a sack. Not good in currants either. And when I leave the water it don’t just dribble the amount of water looks more like beaching a whale.

Le playsuit est de LindyBop. Croyez- moi, j’ai eu peur quand j’ai porté ça la semaine dernièrepour aller à la piscine. Par le bus! Mais enfants n’ont pas commencé de pleurer, les teenies n’ont pas riet j’ai même entendu un „hello sexy“. La blouse est pour nouer. Ça me plaît pas à moi et avec 4 épingles de nourrice c’est un crop top ajustée.
The playsuit is from LindyBop. I was a bit scared when I ventured out with it to the pool. I went by bus. But small children didn’t cry, teenies didn’t laugh and I even got a „hello sexy“. The top is meant to be knotted. Didn’t like that look on me and with 4 friendly safety pins it is now a fitted crop top.

Wedding Belles – Rosen zur Hochzeit

When we did the „Best Dressed – wedding guest or formal summer outfit event“ with the German Curves I thought what a bugger – wayyy to early. Well, this was worth the wait. I believed  I ran out of friends who get married a few years ago. But no, a few months back I got another invite. A well matched couple. Can’t say which I like better, bride or groom. The wedding took friends and me down south. Not all the way, just south of Frankfurt.

The setting for the registry wedding was the pretty Manor, Schloss Fechenbach, in Dieburg, a quaint little town. The reception in the evening was at a very nice and relaxed place. Food was excellent, we got drunk enough and danced till two.
misskittenheel wedding guest roses lindybop dieburg castle 09My dress is a lovely and simple little number with chintzy roses. A bit kitsch, quite romantic. Neither black nor white. Cheerful. Had I known the bride wore navy I would have gone for something darker.

I love the boat neck. You can sit down opposite the strictest mother in law and you know when she frowns it won’t be because your boobs are spilling on the table from a strapless contortion that was never meant to contain anything more than a tiny peach, let alone two.
The hat has been around with the French Curves retro look and this pretty white dress with red dots. The porcelain brooch is vintage.

We always love the idea of a june wedding. Somehow we all tend to blend out that quite often it isn’t pleasant but hot outside. Hot and humid. The perfect weather to melt down.

It wasn’t just humid, we also had a bit of rain – this is where this pretty umbrella comes in handy. It is dainty enough to pass also as a parasol and doesn’t look like you are attending a funeral when it rains.

The bride’s bouquet was really pretty – way to pretty to be thrown around. This time the men had to jump – and one really made the effort!

DIY your Closet: Fashion Week, Baby!

Most of us dress carefully when we go places. So do I when it is time for Fashion Week in Berlin! The right kind of clothing is a statement, an invisibility cloak or your amour for the world out there. Sometimes a bit of all.
Die meisten von uns überlegen sich gut, was sie anziehen. So ist das auch bei mir wenn es wieder an die Auswahl der Garderobe zur Fashionweek in Berlin geht. Die richtige Kleidung sorgt für einen fulminanten Auftritt oder ist ein Schutzschild, je nach Bedarf und Persönlichkeit. Oft aber irgendwas dazwischen.

I wish hats were still the thing to wear with a smart outfit. As much as I love to adopt a new or vintage hat, it is great fun to make your own.
Ich wünschte Hüte gehörten noch immer wie das i-Tüpfelchen dazu. Auch wenn ich es liebe neue oder alte Hüte zu adoptieren, es macht mir unheimlich viel Freude selbst Hand anzulegen.

Sounds grand, eh? Well, kind of. I don’t do the huge saucers. I make mini hats or fascinators. For fun. Also because my funds are limited. Plus it really relaxes me. Most are for myself. The others are presents or give-aways.
Klingt etwas hochtrabend. Naja, ist es aber nur bedingt. Ich mache keine staatstragenden Wagenräder. Ich mache Mini-Hüte oder Fascinators. Zum Spaß. Und weil die Mittel nicht reichen für all die schönen Hüte da draußen. Es entspannt mich. Die meisten mache ich für mich. Die anderen sind Geschenke oder Give-Aways.

The pink one was made for the Vanessa Dress in Black Lipstick. And for day one at fashion week. On the train. Plenty of time there and no place to go. DVDs on my notebook – final season of Mad Men. I like to play with patterns. Folding the discrete stripy cotton realigns the geometry. It allows for a play of light and shadows.
Den Pinken habe ich für das Vanessa Kleid im schwarzen Lippenstift-Druck gemacht. Und für den ersten Tag der Fashion Week in Berlin. Im Zug, wo man sowieso nicht wegkommt. Mit DVDs auf dem Laptop – die letzte Staffel von Mad Men. Ich spiele gerne mit Mustern. Faltet man den diskret gestreiften Stoff verändert sich dadurch die Geometrie. Die Falten selber ermöglichen ein Spiel von Licht und Schatten.

The Erst Wilder lipstick-brooch is very matchy-matchy and not that easy to spot. My kind of fun.
Die Erst-Wilder-Lippenstiftbrosche hebt sich kaum ab und ist nicht auf den ersten Blick zu entdecken. Das macht mir Spaß.

„Apples and berries“ is the sibling of last month’s project. But with a black bow. A cute little number especially with the checked dress. Always a huge pleasure when random strangers ask me where they can buy such a pretty thing.
„Äpfel und Beeren“ ist die Zwillingsschwester des Juni-DIY-Projekts. Allerdings mit einer schwarzen Schleife. Ein entzückendes Hütchen, besonders in Kombination mit dem schwarzkariertem Kleid. Ich freue mich immer sehr wenn völlig fremde mich ansprechen, wo man so etwas schönes kaufen kann.

French Curves: Minimalisme en Orange

J’adore le minimalisme. Dans l’architecture. Dans l‘ architecture du paysage et en jardin. Pour mes dessins je préfère des lignes simples. Mais quand je peux (où on me laisse) avec une prise d’humour. Dans la mode ce concept n’est pas le mien.
I love minimalism. In architecture, landscape and garden design. I prefer simple lines in my own creations. But with a bit of humour. In fashion that isn’t quite me.

Orange n’est pas la première couleur associée au minimalisme. C’est le privilège de noir. La robe est peut-être la plus simple que j’ai dans ma garde-robe. Blanc est aussi une couleur forte en minimalise. Et orange et blanc en combinaison me souviennent toujours aux années 1960te.
Orange isn’t one of the first colours that is associated with minimalism. That’s blacks  prerogative. The dress is probably the one with the simplest cut in my wardrobe. White is also heavily associated with minimalism. Orange and white in combination always have a strong 1960s vibe.

Les lunettes en blanc sont entre mes favoris. Les talons sont classiques mais je ne suis pas sûr qu’ils sont sauf leur couleur appropriée.Le clutch est un peu dada et il y a toujours des grandes choses ditdans. Le bananier dans le fond est plus qu’un peu trop tropique. Mais je l’adore.
The white sunglasses are among my favourites. The heels are classic but I am not sure if they are apart from their colour appropriate. The clutch is a bit dada and of course there are always great things inside. The banana in the back is stunningly tropical. I love it.

Stop Staring Mad Man Dress + Vevina Giveaway

Hallo ihr Lieben – heute gibt bei mir es etwas Grossartiges zu gewinnen. Verabschiedet Euch von aufgescheuerten Schenkeln. Vevina ist ein schönes Produkt, damit man sich nicht den Wolf läuft oder zu abgeschnittenen Pyjamahosen unter den Sommerkleidern greifen muss. Letzten Sommer habe ich diese Creme für mich entdeckt und ich bin immer noch begeistert. Nein, ich habe kein vergleichbares Produkt getestet. Warum auch, wenn es bei mir super wirkt?

Vevina, the supercool anti-chafing cream contacted me and I can give away five samples for my readers. I discovered this cream last summer and I love it ever since I tried it. Dieses wunderbare Kleid ist von Stop Staring. Mit diesem Label kam ich mir ewige Zeiten wie das Kind vor dem Süssigkeitenladen vor. Mit der Nase am Fenster. Sabbernd. Aber der Laden hat zu. All diese schönen Dinge direkt vor meinen Augen. Aber unerreichbar.
The gorgeous dress is from Stop Staring. For a very long time I just felt like the kid in the candy shop. Pressing my nose at the window. Drooling. But the shop is closed. All those shiny things before my eyes. But unreachable.

Dann fuhr ich im Januar zur Fashionweek nach Berlin. Bei der Panorama habe ich die Vertreter von Stop Staring vom Fruchthaus kennengelernt. Wie immer habe ich sehnsüchtig nach den Kleidern geschaut. Etwas defensiv. Bis Armin, der Eigentümer mich fragte welche Grösse ich denn trage – es gäbe da noch einige Kleider im Lager, die passen könnten. Prompt hat er den Kollegen angerufen die für mich heraus zu suchen und ich bin dann einmal quer durch das eisige, winterliche Berlin gefahren.
Then I went to Berlin Fashion Week in Janurary. At the Panorama I met Stop-Staring’s German representative das Fruchthaus. As usually I pined over the dresses, a bit defensive. Until Armin, the owner asked fo rmy size and told me to get to the shop – they’d still have some of the bigger sizes in storage. He called the colleague straight away to get them out and off I went through an icy, snow coated Berlin.

Ich war dann fast zwei Stunden im Laden. So viele Pin-Up-Kleider in meiner Grösse habe ich noch nie vorher anprobieren können. Fünf oder sechs klingen für einige von Euch nach nicht sonderlich viel. Aber ich bin im dem Segment schon ziemlich am Ende der Fahnenstange.
I spent two hours there. I never tried on that many pin-up dresses in my life before – five or six might not sound a big deal to someone of a regular size. But I am a larger plus size.

Ich war schwer versucht Tatyana’s Vickie zu kaufen – aber eigentlich wollte ich das nicht in Schwarz. Gekauft habe ich dieses rasante Kleid in Pflaume, das direkt aus einer der ersten Staffeln von Mad Men stammen könnte. Das gefaltete Dekolleté ist einfach ein Hingucker. Auch wenn es so ausgefüllt ist, wie bei mir. Die Stop-Staring-Kleider sind nicht preiswert. Sie sind aber ihr Geld wert und wurden in den USA gefertigt. Die Schnitte sind gut und raffiniert. I was most tempted to get the Tatyana’s Vickie. But I got this dashing Mad-Men styled dress in plum. The folded cleavage is ever so pretty. Even as much filled out as on me. The Stop-Staring dresses don’t come cheap. They are made in the US. The styles are good and clean. And my Mad Dress can be easily dressed up or down. Always handy in this country!

Les bons choses de l’era des 1950s sont pour moi: la mode, l’architecture. Les femmes portent encore des chapeaus, des gants – ça me plaît beaucoup.  Je n’aime pas la morale. La bigoterie. Le racisme. La misogynie.
The good things about the era of the 1950s is for me the fashion and the architecture. Ladies still wore hats for everything and gloves – I like that. What I don’t like are the morals of that time. The double standards. The racism. The misogyny.

La vie a peu à peu retournée à la normalite apres la guerre. On a rêvé des places loin et exotiques. L’italie était une place comme ça, especiallement Capri et Venise. La ville des gondoles – Venise et le motif de l’impriment de ma robe. J’ai aussi deux robes avec un plage au sud: une robe en style des 50s en bleu et une plus courte et 60s.
Life had returned bit by bit to normality after the war. People dreamed of faraway and exotic places. Italy was one of these dream destinations, especially Capri and Venice. The city of the canals and gondolas – Venice is the motif printed on my dress. I have also two summer dresses with southern seasides: a 50s one and a shorter and straight one in a 60s style.

Ma grandmere a achete trois colliers de verre murano Venise au début des années 80. Des cadeaux pour mes cousines et moi. La mienne est seule dans ces jours. les autres sont perdus.J’ai trouve le bracelet aux marches aux puces. L’adorable petit chapeau est fait pour moi par Tate Millinery L’original est noir.
My grandmother bought three murano glass necklaces on her trip to Venice in the early 80s. Presents for my cousins and me. Mine is the only one left. The others got lost over time. I found the enamel bracelet at a local flea market. The adorable litte hat was made for me by Tate Millinery. The orignial is black.

Langsam füllt sich unsere kleine Vintage Corner beim Ladies Day des Krefelder Rennclubs. Der Vintage Flaneur, das monatlich erscheindene Retro-Mode und Lifestlye-Zeitschrift, hat gestern zugesagt und ist mit einem Stand dabei. Auch wie Karen von Tate Millinery. Bei ihr könnt Ihr euch noch einen zauberhaften Hut im Look der 1920-1950er Jahre holen. Quasi regional produziert, denn ihr Studio ist in Mönchengladbach.
Slowly but steadily our little Vintage Corner at the Ladies Day by the Krefeld horse racing club the gets more and more real. The German monthly retro-fashion and lifestyle magazine Vintage Flaneur just accepted out invite and will be there with a stall. So will be the lovely Karen from Tate Millinery. You can get a charming hat in a 1920-1950s style from her. A regional produce, since her studio is in the nearby Mönchengladbach.

Wie das große Vorbild in Ascot ist der Ladies Day eine hervorragende Gelegenheit oder Vorwand, ein schickes Outfit in Kombination mit einem Hut oder Hütchen an einem Galopprenntag mit Allem was dazugehört auszuführen. Dazu gehört seit Jahren ein Hutwettbewerb, mit einem tollen Sonderpreis für den schönsten Vintage- oder Repro-Hut: ein Kleid nach Wahl von Dolly and Dotty!
Like the archetype at Royal Ascot is Ladies Day a grand opportunity (or pretext) to wear a nice outfit with a hat or fascinator for a day at the races with all the trimmings. An institution there is the annual hat contest – this year with a great special price for the best vintage or repro hat: a dress of your choice by Dolly and Dotty!

Für den modebewussten, traditionsverbundenen Herren gibt es auch einen Preis – den des Krawattenmanns. Krefeld ist eine alte Seidenstadt und dieses Erbe wird auch auf dem jährlich an Pfingsten stattfindenden Flachsmarkt in Linn hochgehalten. Egal ob Preis oder nicht, keine Dame mit Hut geht leer aus – es gibt ein Glas Sekt zur Begrüßung.
There is also a price for the fashion savy and traditional gentleman for the tie of the day. Krefeld is an old silk town and proud of that heritage. A tradition that is also upheld on the annual flax market in Linn. Winner or not – each lady wearing a hat gets a welcoming glass of sparkling wine.

Mein Outfit ist zwar auch äußerst renntauglich, war allerdings so in der Form für die Eröffnung des Flachsmarktes vorgesehen. Da war es aber zu kalt für nur Bolero und leider auch morgens zu nass für Sonnenschirm und Hütchen. Deswegen sind die Bilder von Montag.
My outfit is pretty good for the races too but was intedet to be worn that way for the opening of the flax market. Unfortunately it was a bit too cold and in the morning even wet for that. The pics were taken on Whit Monday.

Pfingstmontag war ich noch in der grandiosen Horst-Ausstellung im Forum NRW in Düsseldorf. Bei Modespitze gibt es einen sehr guten Bericht über dieses museale Fest der Modefotografie der 1930-1950er Jahre. Wer in der Gegend ist, die Ausstellung ist noch bis einschließlich Sonntag, den 22.05.2016 geöffnet. Der Katalog ist ein Traum (wenngleich ein schwerer) und ich habe mir noch das großartige (Vintage) Vogue-Malbuch gekauft. Hach!
On Whit Monday I took the last chance for me and went to the great Horst-Retrospective at the Forum NRW in Düsseldorf. Manja from Modespitze wrote a terrific account in German (but there are lots of pics) about that curated fashion feast from the 1930s to 1950s! If you happen to be in the area – go there. The exhibition closes Sunday, May 22nd 2016. The cataloge is a dream (a rather heavy one) and I also got myself the Vintage Vogue colouring book. Sigh!

Encore c’est le seizième du mois et la première fois que je suis blogueuse officielle du challenge du French Curves.
Once more it is the 16th of the month and the first time I officially take part in the French Curves Challenge.

Marinière (sans jeans mes filles!) me fait sourire parce-que ce look n’est pas vraiment quelque chose je porte beaucoup. Mais c’est déjà la deuxième entrée ce mois dans mon blog. La dernière fois était „Sailor Girl“ pour „DIY your Closet“ un projet de Kathastrophal et MeinFeenstaub. Cette fois c’est un ensemble de LindyBop. Le Maybelle, plus 60s que 50s, très élégant. A nautical look (without jeans) was it to be – and that made me smile. Especially since that is something I don’t do a lot and already planned it for another post this months. That time it was „Sailor Girl“ for „DIY your Closet“ a project by Kathastrophal and MeinFeenstaub. This time I wear a dress with matching jacket from LindyBop. The Maybelle, more 60s than 50s, very elegant. Very Jackie Kennedy.

Pour le jour j’ai combiné la robe avec un pull-over de Collectif Clothing. Le norvégien, compose du Cotton, sans laine est original pour l’hiver. Mais je pense c’est aussi bien pour un jour moyen à la côte normande (ou belge, suédois, allemande…) en été.  Le sac qui j’ai acheté l’anée dernière est déjà bien aimée et décorée avec un petit carré rouge avec des mouettes et des bateaux de 70s. Les „ballerine chucks“ sont de Deichmann. Payer plus pour des chaussures comme ça n’est pour moi pas une bonne idée. Mes pieds sont trop chauds et ils se trouvent très, très vite (et beaucoup des fois) dans le lavage.
For the day I combine the dress with a sweater from Collectif Clothing. The Fair-Isle made of cotton instead of wool is intended as winter wear. However I think it is much better suited for a not so niche summer day at the coast – think Normandy, Cornwall, Belgium, Germany or Sweden. The much loved straw tote I got last year sports a little red scarf with seagulls and 70s boats. The ballerina „chucks“ are by Deichmann. My feet are way to warm to spend more on such shoes. They find themselves very, very fast and often in the washing machine.

L’autre tenue est pour le soir. Avec un grand carrée de soie. Des bateaux de voile, des noeuds nautiques sur un fond marin. Vieux/ „vintage“, acheté avec des autres foulards des années 60te. J’ai trouvé la broche en Alsace avec le petit carré rouge. Le talons sont un peu trop hauts pour mon gout. C’était la première fois ils ont quitté mon apartment.
The other outfit is for the evening. With a big square scarf. Sailing boats, nautical knots are on a base of navy silk. Got it with a few other scarfes from the 60s. The brooch (like the little red scarf) was thrifted in Alsace (probalby as far as you can get in France from the coast). The red heels are a bit too high for my taste. It is actually the first time they left my flat.
