French Curves: Dolce Vita

La vie est belle. Presque tous les jours. Mais les samedis ma vie devient doux. C’est le jour du marché et chaque troisième samedi aussi pour la brocante. Et là j’ai toujours trouvé quelque chose. Ce sont presque seulement des vendeurs privés là. Cette fois j’ai acheté un globe pour enfants, une tasse ornementale et un sac en style rétro mais assez grand pour une iPad. J’ai aussi acheté des fruits et légumes dans le petit magasin en face de l’hôtel de ville. Ce matin, c’était le marché ou la brocante après que je suis réveillée très, très tard. Avant de retourner chez moi, il fit ainsi beaux (et j’ai eu faim) pour une glace (spaghetti avec fraises).

Life is good. Even most days. But on Saturday life is sweet. It is market day and every third Saturday there is also a great flea market in town. I always find something there. Almost only private sellers.This time I bought a children’s globe, a collectors cup and saucer set and a handbag in a vintage style that is large enough for the iPad. I also got fruit and veg in the little shop facing the town hall. Well, it was either the market or the flea market as I got up a bit later than planned. Before I brought my treasured home I had a lovely ice cream (spaghetti: vanilla, cream and strawberries) in the shade.

Leben ist süß, vor allem an Samstagen. Dann ist Markt inder Innenstadt und jeden dritten Samstag auch noch Flohmarkt vor dem Rathaus. Klein aber fein, fast nur Privatleute. Da finde ich eigentlich immer was. Dieses Mal einen Kinderglobus, eine 1950er Sammeltasse und eine Handtasche im Retrostil, die gross genug für mein iPad ist. Abgesehen davon habe ich noch etwas Obst und Gemüse im kleinen Laden gegenüber vom Rathaus gekauft, ich war etwas spät dran und so war es der Flohmarkt und nicht der Markt, beides ging nicht mehr. Bevor ich aber die reiche Beute nach Hause geschafft habe gab es noch ein Spaghetti-Eis in meiner Lieblingseisdiele.

got this awesome dress for myself as a birthday present. Took a while to take it out as the hem had to be taken in and it had to be proper summer, too. This beautiful number is Pinup Girl Clothing’s Alfreda dress in Hawaiian parrot print.

Mein Geburtstagsgeschenk für mich war dieses Kleid. Hat etwas gedauert bis es ausgeführt wurde, denn dafür braucht es gutes Wetter und es müsste mal wieder gekürzt werden. Dafür jetzt aber tropische Pracht mit Papageien und Kakadus!

OOTD Berlin, Berlin – Curvy Fashion Fair

So, I did my hair and the make-up and went for a killer outfit, I hired the bike a day before at some obscure Tourist trap (albeit a cheaper one than usual). The room and the train tickets were booked well in advace. I was ready to go to the Curvy fashion Fair that is part of Berlin Fashion Week. Best laid plans and all that: after a serious dry spell there was a torrential rain in the morning, however when I left on the bike for the ca. 6k ride it was once more dry. Not dry enough aas it started to rain a bit again.

Then the bike chain came off and nearly threw me off the bike as it clogged the hind wheel. So prissy missy fixed that in a tick – with the result of having very sticky black fingers. As I was almost done I was even offered help by a rather nice gentleman. Who didn’t want to make is hands dirty but offered me the assistance of their mechanic or craftsman. So, good manners aren’t dead yet!

When I arrived at the fair I was a sweaty mess with sticky fingers and wet hair. Thanks to hand dryers where I blow dried my hair (after successfully cleaning my hands) – I looked representable again.

The fair was more or less as expected. And there will be another post about that. I met quite a few (fabulous) bloggers and was surprised how many recognised me or my name. I had a ball!

Ladies Day – Renntag mit Hut

Germany isn’t England – but still we got horse races over here. It was Ladies Day in Krefeld at the venerable Rennclub. A beautiful ensemble from 1912. As Ladies we got a welcoming voucher for a glass of bubbly and an invite to the annual hat contest when we got there. We already started the journey with my favorite pink cremant on the train and the mood on arrival was bubbly. However the weather was not.

The three of us had a stroll around and opted for a table overlooking the finish line at the restaurant area. Service was excellent, the food good and surprisingly reasonably priced. A huge salat with shrimps was 9 EUR, the mouthwatering potato soup a fiver.

Our partaking in the hat contest was unsuccessful, but we still got lots of compliments elsewhere. Had a better hand with my betting – it makes the races so much more exciting to watch. Lacking in depth knowledge (and there are many examples that prove that doesn’t help that much either) – we picked out horses by looks, names or colours. So, from the five races where I bid an Euro each on six horses, I gained 7,40 EUR. Yes, I might buy myself an ice cream today from my whopping wins!

We didn’t attend the fashion show but since I asked, two (well, there is always one that doesn’t want one) of us got those badges afterwards. The press speaker (who serioulsy looked a lot like Cameron Diaz) from the race course not only found two more, she even found us at our box. Was it a grand day out? You bet!

The only lucky sign I didn’t wear was a horse shoe.
We didn’t win, but I was given the first contestant number for the hat competition.

Deutschland ist nicht England – und trotzdem gibt es auch hier Pferderennen – wenn auch zumindest von Seiten der meisten Besucher in abgeschwächter Form. Es war der Ladies Day in Krefeld. Das schöne Ensemble des ehrwürdigen Rennclubs ist aus dem Jahre 1912. Als Ladies bekamen wir zur Begrüssung eine Einladung zum Hutwettbewerb und einen Gutschein für ein Glas Sekt. Da wir schon im Zug mit meinem bevorzugten rosa Cremant angestossen hatten, war die Stimmung im Gegensatz zum Wetter sehr gut gelaunt.
Wir drei Mädels hatten uns dann erst einmal umgesehen und uns für einen Tisch im verglasten Logenbereich entschieden. Der Service war hervorragend, das Essen gut und überraschend moderat im Preis. Einen grossen Salatteller mit Garnelen gab es für 9 EUR und die leckere Kartoffelsuppe für einen Fünfer.
Unsere Teilnahm im Hutwettbewerb war nicht erfolgreich – aber wir bekamen viele Komplimente anderswo dafür. Mein Händchen bei den Wetten war dann auch besser. Das erhöht einfach die Spannung. Wenn es an Fachwissen fehlt (und auch das scheint mitunter nicht wirklich zu helfen) sucht man sich die Pferde halt nach Aussehen, Namen oder Farben aus. Bei insgesamt fünf Rennen habe ich sechs Ein-Euro-Wetten abgeschlossen und 7,40 EUR gewonnen. Vielleicht gönne ich mir heute davon ein Eis!
Wir haben nicht die Modenschau besucht, bei der es die Rosetten gab – aber auf Nachfrage hat uns die nette Pressesprecherin (die uns drei sehr an Cameron Diaz erinnerte) noch welche aufgetrieben. Dafür hatte sie uns sogar noch in der Loge gefunden. Toll! Hatten wir einen grossartigen Tag? Ja, darauf konnte man wetten!

Huhu Uhu – Owl be there

Imagine Kinder-eggs with clothing minus the chocolate and you get Modcloths „Stylish Surprise“. I managed to get four altogether – two dresses and two „apparels“ (in my cases tops – both a trip to the more recent past: 80s and 90s styles). Anyway – dress number one is a hoot! A pretty pattern with happy owls. Pretty enough to wear it for the rest of the day!

Stellt euch Überraschungseier mit Kleidung und ohne Schoki vor und heraus kommt Modcloths „Stylish Surprise“. Ein Supersale, bei dem man quasi die Katze im Sack kauft. Ich hatte es geschafft vier zu ergattern: zwei Kleider und zwei „alles ausser Kleider Anziehsachen“ (in beiden Fälle Tops – beide retro – allerdings 80er und 90er Jahre). Kleid Nummer eins gefällt. Ein fröhliches Eulen-Muster und schön genug um damit den Rest des Tages zu verbringen!

Plus-Size OOTD – Pretty Woman

This is my contribution to the German BonPrix competition „Plus-Size OOTD – Pretty Woman”. For once there is no English version.

BonPrix hat zum Wettbewerb aufgerufen, Thema „Plus-Size OOTD – Pretty Woman”. Challenge accepted – Herausforderung angenommen. Dann habe ich mich mal bei BonPrix auf der Webseite umgesehen. Einige Röcke sind mir ins Auge gefallen. Die Jeansjacke von Maite Kelly gefällt, aber ich habe mir gerade eine Kurzjacke von Studio Untold geholt. Auch schön, die hellblauen, mittelhohen Pumps (solche hatte ich wie verrückt letzten Sommer gesucht, hoffentlich passen die) und diese Strandtasche.

Mein Frühlings-Outfit ist aber ein anderes. Frühling das ist für mich rosa und gelb – Zierkirschen und Narzissen, Tulpen, Hyazinthen. Ein Blütenrausch. Aber auch die Zeit wo die Jacken wieder dünner und die Wintermäntel weg gehangen werden. Die Zeit in der das Leben wieder bunter wird.

Mit dem kräftigen Gelb des Blazers und dem rockigem Shirt ist das Outfit mehr Power als Flower

Plus-Size OOTD – Pretty Woman by misskittenheel featuring ombre makeup

Diese Jahreszeit ist die richtige Zeit etwas Florales in die Garderobe zu bringen. Der schwarze Blumenrock hat mir richtig gut gefallen (den gibt es auch in Mentholblau). Ein Bleistiftrock sieht immer sehr angezogen aus.

denn Dunkelheit für immer gibt es nicht.“

Der Hingucker des Outfits ist aber der gelbe Jerseyblazer mit dem Schösschen. Der schmeichelt nicht nur der „Sanduhr“-Figur, der macht auch bei weniger Taille schöne Kurven. So ein Teil inszeniert, das kaschiert nicht. Vor allem nicht in Gelb. Mit Gelb geht die Sonne auf. Gelb ist nicht für den Hintergrund! Das Mottoshirt (Your Life Rocks) finde ich prima, macht das Outfit auch nicht so damenhaft. Ich mag Kontraste. Kontraste wie das Gelb/Schwarz, aber auch der Rock Chic(k) Look des T-Shirts zum geblümten Rock.

Blumen und Sonne zum Anziehen – auch bei Schlechtwetter

Mein Stil ist „Vintage with a Twist“ – quasi „Retro mit Augenzwinkern“. Kleidung, die meine sehr weibliche Figur betont. Ich liebe den Rockabilly- oder PinUp-Look – es darf aber nicht wie aus dem Museum aussehen. Zu dem Outfit würde ich zwar gerne eine meiner Vintage-Gobelintaschen ausführen – aber ich finde die goldene Tasche von BonPrix auch klasse, da gehen sogar noch Ballerinas zum Wechseln rein. Das Tuch „Live Love Laugh“ und die Stretcharmbänder wiederholen das geblümte Thema und die klassischen Pumps, bzw. die Ballerinas runden den Look mit einem schwarzen, ruhigen Akzent ab. Die Taille kann noch extra mit dem Gürtel über dem Jersey-Jäckchen betont werden, muss aber nicht.

Shopping: Little Black Dresses to Go

It is a true classic and comes in many forms: the little black dress. Hope you are not yawning yet, but it is ever so versatile and useful. You can easily go from work to play. Change a few accessories to dress it up or down. Go from „no frills“ to glam in less than five minutes. Chose the right material and it happily travels with you wrinkle-free in either backpack or trolley. It is like having an ace up your sleeve. So today I picked a few inexpensive dresses from ASOS Curve.

Work to Play

This one is my favourite of the lot, though personally I prefer dresses to be longer. But I am involved in (local) politics and occasionally that includes debate rounds on stages. So I find myself sitting between chair or table level above the audience. Quite often it is just a bunch of seats, without a covered table in front of you. Trust me, you want to concentrate on what you say, not if anyone can look up your skirt! Still, that dress is a super cute basic. It’ll show your curves without showing any cleavage. Dress it down with a denim jacket and some low chucks or ballet flats. Glam it up with killer heels, a clutch and some seamed tights.

The wrap dress is another classic and flatters most shapes. For a professional look I’d put a top, cami or t-shirt underneath. Dress it down with a happy scarf and flats. You can wear boots and a floppy hat with it for a boho look or a statement necklace and some killer heels to impress.

Rather too low cut for work, but still great to show of your curves. Put a crisp shirt underneath and you’ll look very professional with a whiff of sexy secretary. Not a bad look, eh? In summer wear it with big glasses, a straw tote and some flip flops and people will struggle to believe that is the very same dress.

Off Work

The Bardot dress is not something I’d wear to work, and I even wear my kitten dresses there! Has something to do with off shoulder. However it is a super cute black dress that’ll take you from shopping to cocktails no matter if you are sightseeing or staying locally. Wear it to a BBQ or a picnic with friends with flats or dress it up for a date.

The last one is a stunner. There are places where you could wear it to work. The creative sector comes to my mind. Although in landscape architecture that would be very overdressed. I’d happily wear it to an opening of an exhibition with some coloured and/or patterned tights. Possibly with an assortment of smaller vintage brooches or a bigger one. It is at home with Sunday brunches and cocktails, art house cinema, that kind of thing. I like the artsy vibe and the rather severe cut. It’ll show off your curves, but not flash your boobs. You can show off a bit of leg, so I’d not wear it with anything lower than a kittenheel.

Crazy Cat Lady returns

I got myself another dress and the parents a new cat. He is a 10 year old rescue cat called Gismo. The dress was called mews-eum by modcloth. Love the kitten and frame pattern. The cut however doesn’t justify the price. But being an avid reader of the reviews, I already expected that. Not surprisingly this dress gets a lot of attention. It is bags of fun. And not bad on the bike.

Sneak peek in customs where I picked this up.

The gray one looks like my one of our first cats. She was quite the princess. Like most of our others a former stray. She ended up on the streets after a very pampered first year. But fortunatley that and her stay in the shelter was brief, before she found me. When she had to be put down she was 18. We had a few cats, but she’ll always be THE cat for me.

This cutsey is Gismo. The new old cat in the (parent’s) house. First one in a long time that isn’t a shy one.

Ich habe ein neues Kleid und die Eltern eine neue Katz‘. Er ist ein ca. 10 Jahre alter Kater den wir vom Katzenschutzbund vermittelt bekamen. Das Kleid nannte sich Mews-eum und ist von Modcloth. Ein tolles Muster mit den Katzen in den Bilderrahmen. Leider rechtfertigt der Schnitt nicht den Preis. Aber das hatte ich nach den Beurteilungen auf der Seite auch nicht erwartet. Wenig überraschend sorgt das Kleid für jede Menge Aufmerksamkeit. Es macht einfach Spass es anzuziehen und hält sich nicht schlecht auf dem Rad.
Die graue Katze sieht aus wie eine unserer ersten. Sie war eine echte Prinzessin. Wie die meisten unserer Katzen ein ehemaliger Streuner. Nach einem anscheinend sehr verwöhntem erstem Jahr, endete sie auf der Strasse. Zum Glück war das aber wie ihr Aufenthalt im Tierheim sehr , sehr kurz. Als sie nach einem Unfall eingeschläfert werden musste, war sie über 18 Jahre alt. Wir hatten einige Katzen. für mich bleibt sie aber immer DIE Katze.
Dieses Schätzchen ist Gismo. Der neue alte Kater im Haus meiner Eltern. Der Erste in einiger Zeit, der nicht schüchtern ist.

Tuesday = Shoesday: Fit for a Princess

Got those lovelies probably in 2007, from Primark. The French intern in my office in England said they are princess slippers. Sling backs always sling off my heel, but these are gorgeous dusky rose velvet shoes. Two inch/ five centimetre heel. Used to wear them with jeans, but need to match them with a dress. Not sure which one though. I guess I need a simple cream shift or skater dress for next winter made of wool or tweed.

Diese Hübschen habe ich wenn ich mich richtig erinnere 2007 gekauft, bei Primark. Unsere französische Praktikantin in meinem Büro in England fand das sind richtige Prinzessinnen-Schuhe. Sling-Backs und ich sind keine guten Freunde. Leider rutschen sie immer von meinen Fersen. Diese Schuhe sind aber einfach wunderschön, aus altrosa, glänzendem Samt mit einem fünf Zentimeter Absatz. Früher habe ich sie immer zu Jeans getragen. Aber ich will sie demnächst mal wieder mit einem Kleid tragen. Am liebsten mit einem in Creme, aus Wolle oder Tweed.
