My favorite harpist is on tour again. It is always a huge pleasure to hear Nadia Birkenstock in concert. Ever since her album Winter Tales she is the ultimate Snow Queen for me. This is how winter should look!

Adventskalender: ‚Ice Princess‘ Bling

Bling time today for a proper ice princess or snow queen. You might have realised that I got a thing for brooches. But they are easy and fun. You can pin them to a handbag, your outerwear (each of my coats hat its own brooch) or simply on yourself (or rather yopur shirt/ dress/sweater/vest… a single one or a clutter. Necklaces are a bit neglected since I usually wear a scarf with almost everything.

A bracelet is always nice for a littel bling and can also be worn above a bracelet or ellbowlength glove.

Adventskalender: Style-Crush Solanah from Vintage Vixen

I thought I’d introduce a new series called style crush. Style crush is about inspiration. People, movies or TV shows, pictures. We all need a little input from time to time.

Guess it is almost three years or four ago that I came across Solanah’s Blog Vintage Vixen. I did a little research on how-to do pin curls and I found her. She has an awesome 1950s inspired style. And she really lives it. She is curvy, but by no means plus sized. But style isn’t about size. Though it can be a real bugger to find the things you love when you have the „wrong kind of size“.

So I thought I share some of my favorite outfits from Vintage Vixen!

Gorgeous bag – same goes for the rest of the outfit. But it is the bag I covet.

This feels very jolly – festive casual if you want to annoy your surroundings. For work I ditch the red boots. But all in all a splendid outfit for the Christmas market. Time to tune in again on Radio Snowflake to drive the colleagues nuts…

Adventskalender: Make your own Glühwein!

The air is crisp outside and the Christmas markets are back in town. Mulled wine or Glühwein is a drink I enjoy quite often not very much. Too sweet, awful wine as a base and hardly any spices, luke warm in an ungly mug is the harsh reality of many stalls out there. It makes you appreciate „your“ usual one even more. One of my favorite markets was the one in Manchester with the neogothic town hall as a back drop. How quaint!

Sometimes however you want to make your own mulled wine.
This is my recipe:

  • a bottle of drinkable (dry) red wine
  • 2 cinnamon sticks
  • 3 star anise
  • 3 cloves
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 2 pods of cardamon
  • a touch of nutmeg
  • a couple of pink peppercorns
  • 2-3 tablespoons of muscova (or cane) sugar

A copper kettle would be very appropriate, but actually any kettle will do, even if it won’t impress your guests. Make sure it just simmers and doesn’t get to boil (or else the alcohol will evaporate). To serve put in heatproof glasses (or your assorted collection of Christmas market mugs). Some gingerbread and/ or plums in bacon go rather nicely along. Prost!

Draussen wird es wieder klirrend kalt und der Weihnachtsmarkt ist wieder in der Stadt. Glühwein ist eines der Getränke das ich sehr, sehr oft nicht mag. Meist zu süss, mit einem schlechten Wein als Basis, kaum Gewürze und lauwarm in einer hässlichen Tasse ist leider viel zu oft die Realität an so manchem Stand. Man schätzt dann „seinen“ Stand um so mehr, wenn man ihn denn gefunden hat. Einer meiner Lieblingsmärkte war der German Market in Manchester. Das neugotische Rathaus im Hintergrund war einfach eine grandiose Kulisse!

Manchmal mache ich aber auch meinen eigenen Glühwein. Und das ist mein Rezept:

  • eine Flasche trinkbaren (trockenen) Rotwein
  • 2 Zimtstangen
  • 3 Sternanis
  • 3 Nelken
  • eine Orange in Scheiben
  • 2 Kardamon-Kapseln
  • eine Prise Muskat
  • ein paar Rosa Pfefferkörner
  • 2-3 Esslöffel Muscova oder braunen Rohrzucker

Ein Kupferkessel wäre natürlich sehr adäquat, aber eigentlich tut es irgendein Tops, auch wenn der dann nicht unbedingt die Gäste beeindruckt. Den Glühwein nur erhitzen, nicht aufkochen lassen (sonst verdunstet der Alkohol). Dann in hitzebeständigen Gläsern kredenzen (oder halt der bunten Mischung der Tassen der letzen Weihnachtsmärkte). Etwas Lebkuchen und/ oder Pflaumen im Speckmantel passen da recht gut zu. Cheers!

Another Thanksgiving over – my third so far here in Germany. Thanksgiving in Germany? No – it is not a big thing here. We got Erntedank, wich is kind of similar but much earlier. But one of my best friends is originally from the States. So she celebrates the new holidays (like carnival) but also keeps to her traditions. This is what migration is also about – enjoy the best of both (or all of your) worlds. This would also be a great Christmas outfit. Also got a new old handbag – my Mum gave me my Grandma’s vintage clutch. The colour is spot on!

Wieder einmal ist Thanksgiving vorbei – bis jetzt mein drittes in Deutschland. Thanksgiving in Deutschland? Das ist nicht wirklich ein Fest, das wir feiern. Wir haben Erntedank, das ist ähnlich, nur nicht so gross und wesentlich früher. Aber eine meine besten Freundinnen kommt ursprünglich aus den Staaten. Wie viele feiert sie die neuen Feste, wie Karneval, aber behält auch ihre Traditionen. Für mich gehört das zu Migration dazu – das beste aus beiden (oder allen seiner) Welten kombinieren. Das Outfit wäre auch genau das richtige für Weihnachten oder andere Familienfeste. Dazu eine neue alte Handtasche – die habe ich von meiner Ma und die hatte sie von meiner Grossmutter geschenkt bekommen, aber dann doch äusserst selten benutzt. Die Farbe passt aber zum Kleid und zum Oxblood Trend der letzen zwei Jahre. Alternativ dazu würde auch der Persianer Muff (it Handtaschenfunktion) passen. Mal wieder eines meiner Ebay-Fundstücke. Der hält die Finger so schön warm!.

One of these days – not enough time to change when you go out on a Friday night. So you put something on that makes it easily from day into night. You put some heels into your  handbag and put on a dress like the Saturday Night Thrive Dress from Modcloth.

Before I ordered I actually read through most of the customers reviews (currently  about 170) and was in a slight dilemma. Stuck between sizes. I opted for the larger one. It is easier to take a garnment in, that make it larger (or yourself smaller). So when I retrieved the dress from customs I was gutted. The top bit was indeed a wonky fit. And after a few rounds with half a ton of safety pins, I realised no belt or seamstress can make easily make it give that tailored look on me. Bugger!

And then I took out that wrap blouse, that got neglected for quite a while. Loved it on the spot. This was my dress! It even comes with pockets – yayh!

This is the work look. Flats, arm warmers, another scarf and no make-up. The dress looks purple – but it has a black base. The left bottom picture shows the real colours.

Es gibt diese Tage, da habe ich einfach nicht genug Zeit. Also muss ein Outfit her, das man ganz einfach ausgehfertig machen kann. Dann packe ich einfach ein paar Absatzschuhe in die Handtasche und ziehe mir ein Kleid wie das Saturday Night Thrive Dress von Modcloth an.
Bevor ich das Kleid bestellt habe, hatte ich tatsächlich fast alle der über 170 Bewertungen gelesen. Dumm gelaufen – ich war zwischen zwei Grössen. Naja, es ist einfacher Kleidung enger als weiter zu machen. Nachde ich das Kleid vom Zoll abgeholt hatte, war ich erst mal schwer gefrustet. Das Oberteil saß so ganz und gar nicht! Selbst ein paar Runden mit einem Haufen Sicherheitsnadeln waren nicht mit Erfolg gesegnet. Ein Gürtel half auch nicht. Verdammt!
Und dann holte ich meine schwarze, lange vernachlässigte Wickelbluse aus dem Schrank. Bingo! Genau richtig – so gefiel mir das an mir. Und das Beste – das Kleid hat sogar Taschen – yayh!
Das hier ist der Arbeitslook. Flache Schuhe, Armstulpen, ein bunter Schal und kein Make-Up. Auf dem Bild sieht das Kleid lila aus – ist es aber nicht. Das Bild unten links zeigt die echten Farben.

 

Tartan and Lace – Tartan et Dentelle

Aujourd’hui en français – la semaine dernière, j’ai rencontré le challenge “dentelle mania”. Et j’etais enchantée. Et je me suis souvenue que j’ai aussi une robe de dentelle. Des dentelles en chocolat. Une robe que je ne porte presque jamais parce qu’il n’y a pas assez d’événements dans ma vie pour toutes mes robes de cocktail. Et les blogs m’ont montré que les dentelles, c’est aussi joli dans la vie quotidienne. Le mélange des matériaux (ou des dessins) est essentiel pour mon style. Le wrap tricoté en vieux rose avec les dentelles marron est très souple. Les accents tartan font un joli contraste et supplémentent le look. 

Today I started in French. Last week I encountered the challenge „dentelle mania“ („Mad about Lace“). I was charmed. And I remembered I too have a lace dress. Chocolate colored lace. A dress that gets hardly worn because there are not enough opportunities for me to wear all my cocktail dresses. The other blog entries showed me that you can also bring quite a bit of  lace easily into everyday life. Mixing materials (and patterns)  is an essential part of of my style. The dusky pink wrap top and the brown lace are quite soft. The tartan scarf and headband are a nice contrast and complement the outfit.

Heute habe ich mal auf Französich angefangen. Letzte Woche habe ich die Challenge „dentelle mania“ (Verrückt nach Spitze) entdeckt. Und war sehr angetan. Und dann fiel mir auf – hey, ich habe auch noch ein Spitzenkleid. Ein Kleid, das fast nie getragen wird, da es in meinem Leben einfach zu wenige Gelegenheiten gibt u,m alle meine Cocktailkleider zu tragen. Die anderen Blogbeiträge haben mir gezeigt wie schön man im Alltag Spitze tragen kann. Der Mix verschiedener Materialien (und Mustern) ist ein wichtiger Teil meines Stils. Das altrosa Wickeltop und die braune Spitze sehen zusammen sehr weich aus. Der Schal und das Haarband aus Schottenkaro bilden einen guten Kontrast und runden das Outfit ab.
