On the Go: Black Swan

last winter I tried that H&M tulle skirt every blogger was in love with. And that looked fab on more or less all of them. Somehow on me it didn’t feel quite right. I felt like a frustrated librarian on her way to a creative pottery class. I other words a million miles away from fun and flirty. So I decided I give that craze a miss. And then I went to Berlin. At the Curvy fair I saw that pic of Studio Untold’s promo pic for the blogger collection. That was more like it. The skirt hit the online shop and I ordered it. It is shorter. It is fluffier. It is fun. It is flirty and above all, very moi. I feel like at the black swan. Not to fond to wear it with a tshirt, I dug out an old waist coat. And the less than 15min earlier bought polka dot umbrella. First kiss of autumn.

Letzten Winter hatte ich diesen H&M Tüll-Rock anprobiert in dem sich jede Bloggerin verliebt hatte.  Der gefiel mir an Ihnen auch richtig richtig gut. Nur halt an mir nicht. Ich kam mir vor wie die frustrierte Bibliothekarin auf ihrem Weg zum kreativen Töpferkurs. Spaß sieht anders aus. Man muss nicht jeden Trend mitmachen. Und dann fuhr ich nach Berlin. Auf der Curvy Messe sah ich dieses Bild von Studio Untold für die Blogger Kollektion. Das war’s was ich wollte. Der Rock kam in den Onlineshop und ich habe ihn bestellt. Erst kürzer. Ich fühle mich damit wie der schwarze Schwan. Mit einem T-Shirt werde ich ihn erst mal nicht tragen. Dafür habe ich eine alte Weste hervorgeholt. Und den ganz frisch gekauften Pünktchenschirm. Der Herbst lässt grüßen.

I love kitsch, be that quirky patterns, souvenir stuff or other fun things. I love to combine a plain grey tweed dress with wacky accessories to give it an edge. Picture time today with my forest friends! Apart from the button and teh Earrings I found the remaining jewellry on ebay. Socks are from Marks and Spencer, the heels from T.U.K.

Ich liebe Kitsch – das sind mitunter merkwürdige Muster, Andenken oder anderen Kram. Ich kombiniere gerne ein graues Tweed Kleid mit solchen Accessoires. Das macht es etwas schräger. Heute ein paar Bilder mit Waldbewohnern. Bis auf die Ohrringe und der Button ihabe ich den restlichen Schmuck bei Ebay gefunden. Socken Marks + Spencer (im Herbst) und Schuhe T.U.K.

Nuts about Squirrels!

Spring is springing – and yet I’ll post one last wintery (or autumnal) outfit. I love this dress. It is from Boden – and I got it in the sale (lucky me). The material is a soft, velvety corduroy. The pattern is busy. I was afrait it would be a bit too loud (and might have hoped it would be a bit paler), but I love it to bits. The reactions to this dress are great. But you get noticed. A lot!

Am still looking for the ideal flat brown/ brandy coloured knee length boots. The kind of ones that want to kick leaves and don’t mind the odd puddle. With that I can wear my tailored olive wax coat I got a couple of years ago from New Look.

However, when the pics were taken I was en route to have coffee and cake with a friend. Heels, a tweed jacket and a 1950s hat were more appropriate. I am really nuts about this squirrel dress. What do you think?

Another vintage hat. I got this beauty on Etsy – this was it’s first outing. One of the reasons I prefer the shorter hair – for me that works much better with the hats I like.

I like the vintage fur brooch with it. But instead I went for another brooch.

What brooch? On any other outfit the pine cone and branch brooch would look outright too Christmassy but I really like it with the squirrel dress. Though it is hard to spot from a distance!

Zum Glück kommt der Frühling auf leisen Sohlen. Trotzdem kommt noch ein letztes winterliches (oder spätherbstliches) Outfit. Ich liebe dieses Kleid. Es ist von Boden und ich habe es im Sale erstanden. Das Material ist ein superweicher, samtiger Feincord. Das Muster ist sehr prägnant. Ich hatte befürchtet was wäre etwas zu laut (und vielleicht gehofft es wäre etwas blasser) – aber ich finde es einfach toll. Die Reaktionen auf das Kleid sind meist positiv. Aber es ist nichts dafür geeignet in der Menge unterzutauchen.

Ich suche immer noch nach einem Paar flacher, brauner oder cognacfarbener Stiefel. Welche für einen Waldspaziergang, die auch keine Angst vor Pfützen haben. Dazu würde ich dann meine NewLook Wachsjacke tragen. Die ist kurz und tailliert. Aber nicht gefüttert.

Anyway, die Bilder wurden unterwegs gemacht – habe mich mit einer Freundin zu Kaffee und Kuchen getroffen. Da fand ich Tweedjacke, Hut und Absatzschuhe angemessener. Das Wortspiel mit „nuts about this dress“ – funktioniert auf Deutsch nicht – denn wir sind dann nur verrückt und das Kleid geht mir alles andere als „auf die Nüsse“. 

Anbei noch das Polyvore-Set um ein Gefühl für das Kleid zu bekommen. Der 50ger Jahre Hut ist Vintage und über Etsy aus den USA bezogen. Meine Hüte sehen einfach besser mit kürzeren Haaren aus. Die Fellbrosche ist auch Vintage und war mir etwas zuviel des Guten. Die „Weihnachtsbrosche“ mit dem Tannenzapfen und -zweig passt super. Fällt aber kaum auf dem Muster auf. Zumindest nicht ab ca. 2m Abstand. 

Burns Night – Highland Fling

Ach, I love (national) holidays – especially when you have lived (or still live) as an ex-pat. It is a bit home away from home. Also coming from Cologne and the Rhineland we enjoy a good pretense for a party if we see one. One of my dear friends here is a Scot. And like I had the urge to buy a dirndl when I lived in the UK, he proudly wears his kilt to football matches (a stern Dortmund supporter) and to other special occasions.

During this time of the year he is too busy reading Burns at other Burns nights. A night to celebrate Scotlands national poet Robert Burns. There is the address to the Haggis, the speech to the lassies and the reply from the lassies. All in all good fun. And since the „li’l Scot“ is an excellent cook and a generous host, it is always a pleasure to attend. Though usually around mid march (but I guess we even had one in April).

Guess this year I’ll wear my Tartan dress, that due to my (pink) hair colour didn’t shine at Christmas. Thought a bit more low key will be appropriate for the event as the rest of the bunch prefers it casual. Some kind of headwear would be nice. Perhaps a fascionator, a vintage half hat or headband hat?

Ach, Ich liebe (National-) Feiertage. Besonders wenn man schon mal im Ausland gelebt hat, finde ich weis man so etwas zu schätzen. Es ist ein bisschen Heimat. Ausserdem als Kölsch-Mädjer oder Rheinländerin nimmt man gerne alles zum Anlass um mit Freunden (oder Fremden) zu feiern. Einer meiner guten Freunde kommt aus Schottland. Und so wie in in England den Drang hatt mir mindestens ein Dirndl zu kaufen, trägt er stolz seinen Kilt beim Fussball (Borussia Dortmund) und zu anderen besonderen Anlässen. 

Meist ist er um diese Jahreszeit zu beschäftigt für eine eigene Feier, da er Burns Gedichte bei anderen Burns Nächten vorliest! Da gibt es die Ansprache des Haggis (und auch Haggis zu essen), die Rede an die Damen und die Antwort derselben. Ein grosser Spass und immer ein gelungener Abend. Und da der „kleine Schotte“ ein hervorragender Koch und ein noch besserer Gastgeber ist, ist es immer eine Freude dabei zu sein! Meist haben wir diesen Abend immer Mitte März, allerdings auch schon einmal im April.

Dieses Jahr trage ich dann mein Karo Kleid, das ich wegen der pinken Haare Doch nicht zu Weihnachten anhatte. Diesmal nicht so festlich kombiniert, da die anderen es etwas lässiger mögen. Etwas Kopfschmuck fehlt noch (abgesehen vom male-up). Vielleicht ein Fascinator oder ein Cocktail Hütchen.

I love this dress. Or rather the idea of it. The pattern of the skirt reminds me of Orla Kiely or marimekko patterns. And yet it is good old Marks and Spencer who made it. It is a lovely dress. Not sure when it was in the shops. I got it on Ebay, this summer. Three quarter sleeves, jersey top and a lined kneelength polycotton skirt. Fun. Easy to wear.

So where is the catch? The waist is a bit too high for my liking. So I got myself a vest. That little trick lowers the waistline to where mine actually is. Ha! Got that on Ebay, too. The little picture on the right shows something else that should look ace with the rest. In theory. Not so chuffed with the look on on screen. Prooves, be your own editor. I much prefer it with the black scarf. Makes it less busy.

The delightful 1950s hat is from my favorite vintage place in town. Though vintage is a bit of a mouthful. They are an indoor fleamarket/ second hand/ bric-a-brac shop. A treasure trove. The real deal, not a glossy vintage boutique. Back to the half hat – my cousin and I saw it together on one of our rarehopping sprees – and though she saw it first, she let me have it. And now with the new haircut it finally looks really cute. And yes, it matches my persian lamb handwarmer/ handbag really well. Love the mixed materials – felt and fur (the latter has to be vintage though).

Some you have seen it before – but here is my handwarmer/ handbag again! Original 1950s. Mint condition when I got it. Like many other things this was kept for good. And at the end of its original owners lifetime was never worn. So next time you think something it too fancy to wear, think again.

Tartan and Lace – Tartan et Dentelle

Aujourd’hui en français – la semaine dernière, j’ai rencontré le challenge “dentelle mania”. Et j’etais enchantée. Et je me suis souvenue que j’ai aussi une robe de dentelle. Des dentelles en chocolat. Une robe que je ne porte presque jamais parce qu’il n’y a pas assez d’événements dans ma vie pour toutes mes robes de cocktail. Et les blogs m’ont montré que les dentelles, c’est aussi joli dans la vie quotidienne. Le mélange des matériaux (ou des dessins) est essentiel pour mon style. Le wrap tricoté en vieux rose avec les dentelles marron est très souple. Les accents tartan font un joli contraste et supplémentent le look. 

Today I started in French. Last week I encountered the challenge „dentelle mania“ („Mad about Lace“). I was charmed. And I remembered I too have a lace dress. Chocolate colored lace. A dress that gets hardly worn because there are not enough opportunities for me to wear all my cocktail dresses. The other blog entries showed me that you can also bring quite a bit of  lace easily into everyday life. Mixing materials (and patterns)  is an essential part of of my style. The dusky pink wrap top and the brown lace are quite soft. The tartan scarf and headband are a nice contrast and complement the outfit.

Heute habe ich mal auf Französich angefangen. Letzte Woche habe ich die Challenge „dentelle mania“ (Verrückt nach Spitze) entdeckt. Und war sehr angetan. Und dann fiel mir auf – hey, ich habe auch noch ein Spitzenkleid. Ein Kleid, das fast nie getragen wird, da es in meinem Leben einfach zu wenige Gelegenheiten gibt u,m alle meine Cocktailkleider zu tragen. Die anderen Blogbeiträge haben mir gezeigt wie schön man im Alltag Spitze tragen kann. Der Mix verschiedener Materialien (und Mustern) ist ein wichtiger Teil meines Stils. Das altrosa Wickeltop und die braune Spitze sehen zusammen sehr weich aus. Der Schal und das Haarband aus Schottenkaro bilden einen guten Kontrast und runden das Outfit ab.

As you can see, this pic was taken a few weeks ago – I didn’t grow back my hair overnight. I like the combination of business formal and utterly female accessories.Perfect when you don’t have any appointments with clients and have a lunch date with your bestie. A glass of red would just round off the outfit.

I use a lot of look-a-likes in Polyvore – my black velvet platform sandals are not from Gucci. I got them in a small local shop. They were 3-4 times reduced since most ladies don’t get black velvet sandals for summer. However they have a great vintage vibe and are a steal for 15 EUR.

Klar zu erkennen, da ich mir meine Haare nicht über Nacht zurückgewachsen sind – das Bild ist 2-3 Wochen als. Ich mag die Kombi aus formalem Business-Look und super weiblichen Assessoires, wie den Netzstrümpfen. Für mich perfekt wenn ich keinen Kunden-/Bauherrenkontakt habe. Dafür aber eine gute Freundin zum Lunch treffe.  Dieser Post zeigt, wie oft ich Polyvore nutze um einen Look zu entwerfen – passiert öfters durchs Online-Bestellen. Bei Polyvore benutze ich viele Dinge, die meinen sehr ähnlich sehen. Wie z.B: die Gucci-Pumps. Meine sind aus einem kleinen Schuhladen hier vor Ort. Die waren 3-4 mal reduziert, da viele Frauen im Sommer keine schwarzen Samtsandalen wollen. Trotzdem sehen die sehr vintagemässig aus und waren für 15 EUR ein echtes Schnäppchen!

Scouting in Tweed and Mustard

Had a fun time with the boyfriend checking out the local stores if Shopping Queen comes to town (and they want me). Real life clothes shopping in this country and in my size is tedious at best. Hardly ever real fun, as I am not very happy with what I find. Dresses are rarer to find in Germany than  in the UK, especially in a size UK 22/ EUR 50/ US 20. So most of my stuff arrives by post.

Shopping queen is a popular concept on day time TV. Each week the show hits a different city. Five ladies (there is rarely a guy taking part) get a motto for the week. Each day one of them goes shopping with a friend. The others stay at her place and check it out. Emphasis on the wardrobe. Each day the shopper presents her outfit and gets rated by the rest.  At the end of the week they also get judged by a designer. The one with the most points is the new shopping queen. The designer’s comments make this show good fun.

After a few of my friends and (former) colleagues asked me, if finally sent in my application. I was quite surprised when my man asked me if he could be my shopping assistant. And this Saturday morning we had a thorough look at the local stores from a strategic point of view. Variety in my size, location and other accessories were among the key points. Fingers crossed that Shopping Queen wants me (and that they’ll soon come to town).

I love autumn and I love tweed. It quite shows: dress, blazer, handbag and even down to Miss Kittenheels favorite kitten heels are made of tweed. Now I wonder is this outfit missing a dinky (tweed) hat?

Heute haben mein Freund und ich mal die Läden vor Ort auf ihr Potential für Shopping Queen angetestet. Für den Fall dass sie mal nach Bochum kommen und ich dabei bin. Kleiderkauf in Echtzeit ist in diesem Land und vor allem vor Ort bestenfalls zäh. Spass sieht für mich anders aus, da mir wenig gefällt, das in meiner Grösse angeboten wird. Kleider sind hier in Deutschland sowieso schwerer zu finden als in England, vor allem in einer EUR-Grösse 50. Deswegen kommt fast alles per Post zu mir. 

Die meisten werden das Konzept von Shopping Queen kennen, deswegen lasse ich das jetzt im Gegensatz zur englischen Variante aus. Einige Freunde und (ehemalige) Arbeitkollegen hatten mich mit der Idee bei der Einkaufs-Show mitzumachen. Letztes Wochenende hatte ich dann tatsächlich meine Bewerbung abgeschickt.  Zu meiner Überraschung hat mich mein Freund gefragt, ob er meine Shoppingbegleitung sein darf.

Diesen Samstag haben wir uns mal die Läden in Bochum nach strategischen Gesichtspunkten angesehen. Auswahl in meiner Grösse, Lage und was es an Assessoires gibt, waren wichtige Kriterien. Jetzt heisst es Daumen drücken das Shopping Queen mich will (und das sie bald in den Pott kommen).

Ich liebe den Herbst und ich liebe Tweed. Das zeigt sich dann wohl auch: Kleid, Blazer, Handtasche bis zu den Schuhen (Miss Kittenheels liebste Kittenheels!) sind aus Tweed. Jetzt frage ich mich, brauch dieses Outfit noch ein neckisches (Tweed) Hütchen?

Foxy Fall

Some time ago, I think that was in May or early June I came across T.U.K.’s Foxy Heels in green velvet and fell in love – or lust. One of the things I quite frequently do before I get new things is I patch a possible outfit together in Polyvore. Either with things I own or are very similar to my things. On their first day out the Fox heels received quite a lot of attention and praise. They are super cute! Hope you approve the transition from look board to street style.

Irgendwann im May oder Anfang Juni habe ich diese Schuhe gesehen. Und mich verliebt. Regelmässig bevor ich mir etwas kaufe, erstelle ich eine Kollage auf Polyvore. Entweder mit meinen Dingen oder mit Sachen, die so ähnlich aussehen. Bei ihrem ersten Ausflug haben die Fuchs-Schuhe einiges an Aufmerksamkeit erregt. Sie sind supersüss. Ich hoffe Euch gefällt die Umsetzung von Lookboard in Street-Style.

 

Floral Fall

Sometimes you wish summer never to end – or at least find a way to wear one of your favorite dresses out of season. I combine this lovely prom dress with an emerald green shirt underneath. Forest green tights and high heeled sandals (weather permitting) give it a very dressed look. I love scarfs and with this dress the navy blue polka dot scarf finally leaves the drawer quite frequently. Got the pale mustard tweedy blazer off Ebay in the US. I like the bracelet length. The clutch is vintage, so is the brooch. Though I bought that brooch years ago when I was eight (!) on a flea market. Somethings never change – I always liked a bit of bling!

Manchmal wollen wir, das der Sommer niemals aufhört – oder wir zumindest weiter unsere Lieblingskleider tragen können. Dieses Sommerkleid trage ich mit einem smaragdgrünen Hemd darunter. Dunkelgrüne Strumpfhosen und, wenn es das Wetter erlaubt, hochhackige Sandalen begleiten das Kleid in die kältere Jahreszeit. Ich liebe Halstücher und mit dieser Kombi kommt der blaue Tupfenschal endlich mal wieder vor die Tür. Den blass senfgelben  Blazer habe ich bei Ebay in den USA entdeckt. Die Länge heisst auf English „bracelet length“. Eine Zwischenlänge – zwischen dreiviertel und langen Ärmeln.
Die Clutch und die Brosche sind vintage. Die Brosche habe ich mir mit acht Jahren auf einem Flohmarkt gekauft. Manche Dinge ändern sich nie – ich mochte immer schon ein wenig Glitzer!
