On the Go: Russisan Avantgarde and a Kimono-Dress

Some happy snaps from yesterday’s opening of „Russian Avantgarde“ in Bochum. I still blame Elli from Curvy Fashionelly for this purchase. She posted this pic at the Curvy in Berlin and I was smitten. Somehow my attempts to get my pic taken with this dress are not very successful. Anyway, there are more flattering pics of me and there will be another session with this dress with a different, a bit more formal styling. Yesterday the dress got a bit toned down with a wooly scarf, my smallish messenger bag and the brogues. Since the opening of a new exhibition attracted quite arty people I had fun to wear my new vintage faux Persian lamb headband and some dotted tights.

Anyone else to think Lucky Strikes?

This is another gorgeous dress I got in the January sales. It is from Manon Baptiste and was sold at Navabi. The original price tag said 180 EUR. But in the end it got marked down to 55 EUR. I think it fits rather nicely. The pockets are a huge bonus. Still need to get used to dresses with pockets.

With a dress this costly I was surpised that there wasn’t even a tiny bit of stretch involved – it creases very easily. And not too smartly either. My other complaint: the black material at the sleeves and waist is polyester, contrary to the checked pure cotton. That isn’t per se a bad thing. Though it is one of those polyesters that smells at the end of the day. Regardless that you showered before and used a decent deodorant. Wear it once and wash out the armpits. I guess it won’t go travelling with me. Bugger!

Still a very good look. I added a vintage and somewhat worn grey persian lamb scarf to the collar. Since it was warm enough I got away with my grey tweed jacket. When the coldwater creek blazer made it to my place through ebay I was a bit dissappointed about the fit. The sleeves were bulky. It didn’t close properly. But with my wonderful seamstress it is now a 5 button jacket (instead of two) and has 3/4 sleeves to show off a nice bracelet or gloves. Don’t hesitate to get your things altered. When you wouldn’t wear them otherwise. Make them fit you or sell them on!

Since I was in between people I knew, I asked two lovely elderly ladies to help me out with the picture. They did really well and were quite excited. This was fun! 2015-03-08 11.16.29-1a

The occasion was the mayor’s reception for the international women’s day on march, 8th at the local municipal art museum.

Noch ein wunderbares Kleid, das ich mir im Januar im Sale gekauft habe. Es ist von Manon Baptiste und ich habe es bei Navabi gekauft. Ursprünglich kam es ca. 180 EUR, gekauft habe ich es dann für 55 EUR. Es sitzt sehr gut. Die Taschen sind ein absoluter Pluspunkt. Auch wenn ich mich erst wieder daran gewöhnen muss, das Kleider auch Taschen haben können!
Bei einem so hochpreisigem Kleid war ich dann doch etwas überrascht, das nicht ein Hauch Stretch im Karo-Teil ist, es wirft schnell Falten. Nicht so sexy, die bleiben. Was mich auch nicht begeistert, der schwarze Teil an den Armen ist aus der Art von Polyester, der schnell riecht. Egal wie ausgiebig man geduscht hat und auch ein Power-Deo hilft nicht viel. Zumindest bei mir, empfiehlt es sich am Ende des Tages die Achselhöhlen des Kleides kurz auszuwaschen. Ich mag das Kleid, aber Reisegefährten werden wir so nicht.
Trotzdem ein guter Look. Ich habe noch einen grauen Perisanerschal an den Rundhalsausschnitt gemacht. Er ist Vintage, wahrscheinlich aus den 1950gern und wurde gerne und viel getragen.Der Coldwater Creek blazer ist über Ebay zu mir gekommen. Als ich ihn das erste mal anhatte, war ich enttäuscht. Die Ärmel waren zu massiv, das Jackett schloss nicht schön. Mit der Hilfe meiner wunderbaren Änderungsschneiderin ist ein tolles Ergebnis herausgekommen: die Ärmel sind jetzt 3/4 lang – da kommen (lange) Handschuhe und Armbänder gut zur Geltung und der Blazer hat jetzt fünf statt nur zwei Knöpfe. Man sollte nicht davor zurückschrecken Kleidung anpassen zu lassen. Vor allem wenn sie sonst nur im Schrank hängen bleiben. Also ändern (lassen) oder weiterverkaufen!
Da ich zwischen zwei Terminen alleine unterwegs war, habe ich einfach zwei älteren Damen gefragt, ob sie mit meinem Pad ein Bild von mir machen können. Sie haben das grossartig gemacht und wir hatten viel Spass dabei!
Der Anlass für das Outfit war der Empfang der Oberbürgermeisterin zum internationalen Frauentag im Museum Bochum.
Das Kleid hat mal wieder kurze Ärmel, deswegen trage ich mal ein Shirt drunter – diesmal was aus Wolle/ Seide und aus der Kategorie Thermowäsche.

Guess I am a crazy cat lady in the making. Though currently I don’t quite see a feine sharing lodgings with me. Sure there are cats that don’t need constant human entertainment. But even the more individual ones prefer their human to be more often at home than just a mere four hours a day, at least awake. But it would be so nice to come home to a purring house (or rather flat) mate.

So for now I’ll just do the dresses and other cat accessories. This is cat dress number one. It is pink and has a quirky 1950s atomic pattern. A black kitten on a pink base. Slightly satinated cotton and a lovely circle skirt.

I saw it first on Becky’s Facebook page from Does My Blog make me look fat? and thought – „wow, this is fab!“. Hesitated a bit and then my size was sold out. Bugger. But there is always ebay. And I got it from an American seller. Four weeks and a trip to my local customs office later, it was there. I like it quite a bit.

Most days I even wear it with my pale blue petticoat. To be fair, petticoats are overrated on hot summer days. But in winter the extra tulle layers add not just sone ooomph to the skirt but also extra warmth to the legs.It is a dress that works lovely in all seasons. And something I love about the place I work now, have even worn it to the office!

Nuts about Squirrels!

Spring is springing – and yet I’ll post one last wintery (or autumnal) outfit. I love this dress. It is from Boden – and I got it in the sale (lucky me). The material is a soft, velvety corduroy. The pattern is busy. I was afrait it would be a bit too loud (and might have hoped it would be a bit paler), but I love it to bits. The reactions to this dress are great. But you get noticed. A lot!

Am still looking for the ideal flat brown/ brandy coloured knee length boots. The kind of ones that want to kick leaves and don’t mind the odd puddle. With that I can wear my tailored olive wax coat I got a couple of years ago from New Look.

However, when the pics were taken I was en route to have coffee and cake with a friend. Heels, a tweed jacket and a 1950s hat were more appropriate. I am really nuts about this squirrel dress. What do you think?

Another vintage hat. I got this beauty on Etsy – this was it’s first outing. One of the reasons I prefer the shorter hair – for me that works much better with the hats I like.

I like the vintage fur brooch with it. But instead I went for another brooch.

What brooch? On any other outfit the pine cone and branch brooch would look outright too Christmassy but I really like it with the squirrel dress. Though it is hard to spot from a distance!

Zum Glück kommt der Frühling auf leisen Sohlen. Trotzdem kommt noch ein letztes winterliches (oder spätherbstliches) Outfit. Ich liebe dieses Kleid. Es ist von Boden und ich habe es im Sale erstanden. Das Material ist ein superweicher, samtiger Feincord. Das Muster ist sehr prägnant. Ich hatte befürchtet was wäre etwas zu laut (und vielleicht gehofft es wäre etwas blasser) – aber ich finde es einfach toll. Die Reaktionen auf das Kleid sind meist positiv. Aber es ist nichts dafür geeignet in der Menge unterzutauchen.

Ich suche immer noch nach einem Paar flacher, brauner oder cognacfarbener Stiefel. Welche für einen Waldspaziergang, die auch keine Angst vor Pfützen haben. Dazu würde ich dann meine NewLook Wachsjacke tragen. Die ist kurz und tailliert. Aber nicht gefüttert.

Anyway, die Bilder wurden unterwegs gemacht – habe mich mit einer Freundin zu Kaffee und Kuchen getroffen. Da fand ich Tweedjacke, Hut und Absatzschuhe angemessener. Das Wortspiel mit „nuts about this dress“ – funktioniert auf Deutsch nicht – denn wir sind dann nur verrückt und das Kleid geht mir alles andere als „auf die Nüsse“.

Anbei noch das Polyvore-Set um ein Gefühl für das Kleid zu bekommen. Der 50ger Jahre Hut ist Vintage und über Etsy aus den USA bezogen. Meine Hüte sehen einfach besser mit kürzeren Haaren aus. Die Fellbrosche ist auch Vintage und war mir etwas zuviel des Guten. Die „Weihnachtsbrosche“ mit dem Tannenzapfen und -zweig passt super. Fällt aber kaum auf dem Muster auf. Zumindest nicht ab ca. 2m Abstand.

#FrenchCurves: Graou – a Touch of Leopard

L’amour n’est pas toujours facile. Moi, j’adore le léopard, mais c’est un amour pas retourné. De pied en cap dans une robe ou manteau: mauvaise idée! Quand même avec les accessoires léo ça va très bien. L’inspiration est la fabuleuse Dita van Teese, en vert émeraude avec une clutch léo et aussi de Marylin Monroe en „Gentlemen prefer Blondes“. J’ai aussi une clutch, mais le manchant vais mieux avec l’escarpe en velours et les talons.

Quite often love isn’t easy. I adore leo prints – but that love is somewhat unreturned. Head to toe on me that is a splendidly bad idea! However if I limit myself to accessories it works really well. The inspiration for this outfit comes from the fabulous Dita von Teese wearing an emerald green dress and a leopard clutch and from Marylin Monroe in „Gentlemen prefer Blondes“. I have a leo clutch as well, but the muff works much better with the velvet scarf and the heels!

I was naughty yesterday and bought 5 minutes after it popped up this cherry dress by Hell Bunny. It’ll arrive next Friday. Sigh. Like a few of us I just LOOOOOOOVE cherry prints. They are trickier to come by in plus sizes than polka dots. Including shipping I paid ca. 75EUR. I got this on Ebay from a seller called Bedlamauctions. Sold out already in 4XL/ 22UK. According to Hell Bunny’s Facebook page it’ll soon hit the shops (and more Ebay sellers).

#GermanCurves: Bye, bye Tristesse – Willkommen Frühling!

The plussize community #GermanCurves came up with a new challenge: „bye, bye drabness – welcome spring“. I love spring, which is not that surprising since I am a landscape architect. I don’t really have that one favourite plant. There are too many to love. Though an image that always gives me joy is pink japanese cherries. The pink snow when they drop the petals. Just beautiful!

Currently I am smitten with snowdrops, daffodils, crocusses, tulips and hyacinths. Spring has even made it to my city balcony. It is always nice to see how uch you can get for a tenner. And I usually have my cut flowers on the balcony (not in summer though when it doesn’t make a difference). They last longer that way. Especially those spring flowers. From my sofa I can see them just as well!

We didn’t have much of a winter here – but it was dark and grey and drab. Carnival was an exception with remarkably good and sunny weather. Fortunately! And that was when my mum made the „fashion“ pics in our garden. I did the the others.

I got the dress from modcloth in the sale. I love that pattern. My late aunt had a pattern like that somewhere in her kitchen. The quality is ok – not for the original price tag though. But then again I got it in the sale, and for that it was a bargain. It is a stretchy t-shirt-like material. Unlined. The (mock) wrap sweater is from Dorothy Perkins and after the first one died on me (got that in 2005) I managed to hunt down this one on ebay (2009). Needs to be replaced at some time. Wrap sweaters are a bit tricky at the moment to come by. If you think otherwise and know where I can get one, please feel free to leave a comment! The amber brooch is vintage and from my (maternal) Grandmother. No handbag this time since I packed light or rather had the bag full of costumes. But trust me I have a few that are up for the job – my other gran’s tan croc bag, a little cream 1950s purse and a dark green one.

I forgot to bring the headbands along – which do you prefer with the look? I tend towards the cream and green one. Though the one with the berries is utterly charming too. Both are vintage and from the 1950s. I got them on Etsy. I love that style. If you want something similar search for headband hat, cocktail hat or fascinator. Still need a new demin jacket – a cropped one for all those circle dresses I got recently.

Die Plussize Community #GermanCurves hat sich eine neue Challenge ausgedacht: „bye, bye Tristesse – Wilkommen Frühling“. Ich liebe den Frühling. Das sollte jetzt bei meinem Beruf (Landschaftsarchitketur) keine Überraschung sein. Ich habe auch nicht die eine Lieblingspflanze. Da gibt es einfach zu viele! Allerdings ein Bild das mein Herz immer mit Freude füllt sind die rosa blühenden Zierkirschen, Wenn die ihre Blütenblätter verlieren schneit es pink – einfach herrlich!
Momentan bin ich ganz angetan von Schneeglöckchen, Narzissen, Krokusse, Tulpen und Hyazinthen. Der Frühling hat auch schon Einzug auf meinen Stadtbalkon gehalten. Es ist immer schön zu sehen wieviel man mit 10 EUR verändern kann. Meine Schnittblumen stehen auch (ausser im Sommer) auf dem Balkon. So halten sie sich länger und ich kann sie genauso gut aus von meinem Sofa sehen. Sie halten so länger. Vor allem die Frühjahrsblüher.
Wir hatten hier keinen wirklichen Winter – aber es war dunkel, grau und trist. Karneval war eine Ausnahme mit wirklich gutem, sonnigem Wetter. Da hat meine Ma auch die Bilder von mir im Garten gemacht. Der Rest ist von mir.
Das Kleid habe ich aus dem Sale von Modcloth. Ich liebe dieses Muster. Meine verstorbene Tante hatte so ein Muster irgendwo in ihrer Küche. Die Qualität des Kleides ist ok – aber nicht für den Originalpreis. Im Sale war es ein Schnäppchen. Es ist ungefüttert, aus einem stretchigem T-Shirt Stoff. Der Wickelpullover ist von Dorothy Perkins. Nachdem der erste davon (gekauft 2005) aussortiert werden musste, konnte ich den hier 2009 bei Ebay finden. Aber demnächst sollte auch der ersetzt werden. Wickelpullover sind etwas aus der Mode geraten. Wenn mir eine einen Tipp geben kann, wo ich Ersatz herbekommen kann, bitte einen Kommentar hinterlassen!
Die Bernsteinbrosche ist Vintage und von meiner Oma (mütterlicherseits). Keine Handtasche, da ich die Tasche voller Karnevalssachen hatte. Aber ich habe mehr als ein paar die dafür in Frage kommen: die Kroko-Tasche meiner anderen Oma, eine kleine 1950ger Tasche in Creme und eine in Dunkelgrün.
Ich hatte es verschusselt den Kopfschmuck einzupacken. Welcher passt besser zum Outfit? Ich bevorzuge den in Grün und Weiss. Aber der mit den Beeren ist auch sehr charmant. Beide sind Vintage und aus den 1950ger, aus den USA. Ich habe sie über Etsy gekauft. Ich mag diesen Stil. Wenn ihr auch sowas gerne hättet, sucht nach: headband hat, cocktail hat oder fascinator. Ich brauche noch eine neue Jeansjacke – eine taillenkurze für all die (relativ) neuen Kleider mit den Tellerröcken.

Alaaf, Helau & Man Tau!

Sprachbegabung ist was feines – selbst im Karneval kommt das gut gelegen. Aufgewachsen in Köln (alaaf), arbeite ich mittlerweile in Krefeld (helau) und lebe in Bochum (man tau). Wupptika, das war einmal – aber Wuppertal liegt schon lange zurück.
Pirates are fun! Als Pirat hat man Spass – zumindest im Karneval. Und so bin ich seit Weiberfasnacht bis auf den Karnevalssonntag unterwegs gewesen. Im Strassenkarneval gerne mit den Stretchstiefeln – nur mussten die leider in die Tonne – das Kunstleder flockte nach über 10 jahren ab. Schade! Die Ringelstrümpfe finde ich hochrasant. Der Kopfputz ist ein einfaches Tuch, das gab es mit dem Rock dabei – zum Fascinator auf ein Haarband mit 3 Sicherheitsnadeln gesteckt. Im Gegensatz zu meinem Mini-Dreispitz absolut schunkeltauglich. Bierbänke sind schliesslich zum tanzen da!

Be my valentine!

Despite best laid plan life happens – what was meant to be my anniversary/ valentine’s day outfit will now wait for another date – literally. But it would be a shame to let this occasion go to waste. Anyway this year valentine’s day coincides with carnival AND guess what I’d rather wear and do – yep, don a costume and party. Rather than celebrate a hallmark holiday. Though as cheesy as that sounds this year it would have also been an anniversary! Ach well, enough said – you are here for the outfits.

I got this wonderful Boden dress in the January sales. It dropped from something like 270 EUR down to 70 EUR (including postage). It is brocade or jaquard and the pattern is woven not printed. I thought it would be a tribute to Jaqueline Kennedy. But I don’t channel that – I feel more like Joan Holloway of Mad Men in it. Not bad, eh?

Paired it with different tights and I think it is funny, but the bordeaux ones make the dress look a bit more reddish/ brown and with the black tights, the black base is emphazised. It really brings out my hourglass figure – though that doesn’t come across that well on the pics. The earring situation still isn’t solved to my liking. Am wearing my Grandmother’s pearls. Would prefer something more dangling. The handbag is from my other Gran and passed down from my Mum.

Not my usual lipstick – but cheap and cheerful from H+M „Audrey“ – a bit darker and slightly more bluish than MAC’s Russian Red. Still a very velvety look.

Love the richness and the many layers of the dress. Six colours and doesn’t look garish! The silly little necklace is from Claire’s usually too low hanging for my taste – but think it works with this dress – since I don’t havve a pen/ stylo-necklace like Joanie in Mad Men!

Trotz bester Planung schlägt immer mal wieder das Leben zu: das war eigentlich mein Valentins/ Jahrestag-Outfit. Nun, es scheitert nicht nur am Datum, dieses Jahr ist das zu Karneval (das feiere ich lieber als einen Feiertag der Floristen und Kartenindustrie), sondern auch am jetzt Ex-Privatleben. Genug der Jammerei – ihr seid hier für die Outfits – es wird noch genug andere Gründe geben, das Kleid zu tragen!

Ich habe dieses wunderbare Boden Kleid im Januar gekauft. Es war von ca. 270 EUR auf 70 EUR (inklusive Versand reduziert). Es ist aus Brokat (oder Jaquard) und gewebt und nicht bedruckt. Ich dachte es wäre eine Hommage an Jacky Kennedy. Aber an mir kommt der Look nicht rüber. Ich fühle mich mehr nach Joan Holloway aus Mad Men. Auch nicht schlecht!

Mit unterschiedlichen Strumpfhosen kombiniert, kommen die Farben unterschiedlich heraus. Mit den weinroten wirkt die Basisfarbe bräunlicher. Meine Taille kommt auf den Bildern nicht gut rüber – aber das Kleid bringt meine Sanduhr-Form gut zur Geltung. Die Ohrringe sind noch nicht ganz das was mir vorschwebt. Aber sie sind von meiner Oma. Ich hätte gerne etwas, dass etwas mehr herunter hängt. Die Handtasche ist von meiner anderen Oma und habe die von meiner Ma bekommen.

Nicht mein üblicher Lippenstift – sondern schön für kleines Geld „Audrey“ von H+M. Etwas dunkler und etwas mehr ins Blau gehens als MAC’s Russian Red. Aber auch sehr samtig im Look.

Ich liebe den luxeriösen schweren Stoff und seine Vielschichtigkeit. Sechs Farben und es sieht trotzdem nicht bunt aus! Die alberne kleine Halskette ist von Claire’s. Meist ist die mir zu lang, aber hier passt es – schliesslich habe ich nicht wie Joanie in Mad Men eine Stift-Halskette!

Spring Break in Winter (with cat content)

Ok, so it is still winter and we had quite a bit of snow yesterday. Frankly Winter is my least favorite season (despite Christmas and carnival). So a few days ago I decided to allow myself a little spring break and wore my riviera dress to work. I got it on ebay. And I can’t wait to wear it again – just loooove the 1950s inspired travel pattern. I have a thing for novelty or graphic prints. Think it works rather well with the pale blue sweater and the porcellain brooch I got for Christmas.

Nun denn, es ist immer noch winter und gestern hatten wir sogar morgens richtig viel Schnee. Ehrlich gesagt ist der Winter die Jahreszeit, die ich am wenigsten mag. Torz Weihnachten und Karneval. Deswegen hatte ich vor kurzem mir einen kleinen Ausflug in den Frühling gegönnt und mein Riviera Kleid zur Arbeit angezogen. Das Kleid habe ich auf Ebaygefunde, bei Boden war es schon ausverkauft. Ich mag Muster wie diese – im Englischen Novelty Prints genannt. Finde die Kombi mit der Porzellanbrosche und dem Hellblauen Wickelpullover sehr schön. Donatus ist die Bürokatze – leider ist er wie viele ehemalige Streuner recht scheu.
