I just feel like Miss Santa in that charming outfit. I make quite a darling little helper, don’t I? And I come with different outfits too – have you seen this and this yet?

Etwas Schmuck um mit dem Baum zu Weihnachten um die Wette zu glitzern – das Armband braucht noch eine Verlängerung. Die Laterne war heute nicht zu sehen, dafür aber in ein paar Tagen bei einem anderen Outfit. Leider ist der Sicherheitsverschluss der kleinen Blütenzweigbrosche defekt – etwas was mit in letzter Zeit öfters mal bei Ebay passiert ist. Hmpf…

Dieses wundervolle Bernie Dexter Pin-Up Kleid ist eine Weihnachtskarte zum Anziehen. Es fehlt fast nur der Glitter. Ich schmachte nach diesem Muster schon seit einigen Jahren. Ich finde es grossartig, das Bernie Dexter einen erneuten Anlauf für PlusSize Kleidung unternommen hat und ich drücke ihr die Daumen für ein gutes Gelingen! Ihr werdet dieses Kleid noch in ein paar verschiedenen Styles in den nächsten Wochen sehen können!
Es passt einfach zu mir – allerdings habe ich mir die Freiheit genommen es etwas familiengerechter zu machen. Bei mir gilt: je grösser der Busen, desto kleiner der Ausschnitt. Viel hilft nicht immer viel! Deswegen habe ich vom Schneider meines Vertrauens einen Einsatz aus feinster Plauener Spitze einnähen lassen. Ich hoffe Bernie Dexter rollt jetzt nicht mit den Augen – aber ein Kleid, dass im Schrank hängen bleibt oder an dem man nur herumzupft ist niemals sexy.
So, jetzt aber zum eigentlichen Türchen – heute gibt es bei mir zwei Dinge zu gewinnen: die wunderbare CD „The Glow within“ meiner Lieblingsharfinistin, Stylecrush und Sängerin Nadia Birkenstock mit dem Percussionisten Steve Hubback. Nadia und Steve geben im Januar zwei Konzerte – eines in München und eines in Salzburg, vielleicht passt das ja bei Euch. Die beiden würden sich sicherlich freuen!

This is a dream come through. A Christmas card you can wear. I lusted for this pattern for at least three years. Saw it sighed in awe. Whistfully as the largest size was still a few sizes too small. Earlier in the year there was a heated debate on Bernie Dexter’s Facebook page. Well, her first attempt at plus sizes a few years back failed apparently epically. It was too early. I keep my fingers crossed for this time though and wish her the best of luck and success (that’s how we do it in German). And suddenly what I lusted for became available. In my size.
An hour later when I clicked on the dress to buy it it was out of stock. Panic. Ohhh nooooooooo! So close. So I wrote an email and within the hour I got a reply. So promptly. She was checking stocks and was happy to tell me there were more in 4xl available. Finally the pattern I waited for three years came within three weeks. My trusted taylor added a lace insert as the cleavage isn’t very modest on me. And since tugging is never sexy (or banning something into the wardrobe) I prefer it that way – on me. I hope Bernie Dexter will forgive me. The charming little hat is by Tate Millinery and was featured in this issue of Vintage Flaneur by the lovely Vintagemädchen.

I already spent more in the sales than I wanted but look at this beauty – and it is still available in larger sizes. Though I wear a US20 at Lane Bryant I am stuck between 2XL and 3XL at Modcloth. And taking in is usally easier than adding… So, here is one cute dress for next Christmas – half price – just keep in mind not to spend more than 150 EUR including postage – otherwise you also have to pay import charges and not just taxes! And this is the final dress I sooooooo want to have from Boden’s 2014 winter collection – the lovely beatrice dress. Yep, a 1950s/1960s style brocade dress – fancy, but not too fancy for a date night (or for the office Christmas party). Currently at roughly the quarter of the original price. And at that price it’ll be mine! Dies ist das letze Kleid, dass mir sehr, sehr gut in der Winterkollektion 2014 von Boden gefallen hat – Beatrice. Yep, ein 50ger/60ger Brokatkleid – fein, aber nicht zu fein für ein Date (oder für die nächste Büro-Weihnachtsfeier). Momentan für fast ein Viertel des eigentlichen Kaufpreises zu haben und für den Preis ist es jetzt zu mir unterwegs!

This year is going to be special – I’ll be home for Christmas. That isn’t really that new. I am always kind of home for Christmas. This year however, my parents are staying in my bachlorette pad. We will be a merry bunch for Christmas eve: the friends with whom I usually celebrate Christmas Eve, her parents who moved over from the States to be closer to their only daughter, my neighbour (and ex-boyfriend), another friend and her fiance, as well as my parents and I. My man won’t join us – he doesn’t do Christmas. We will have coffee, cake and savouries and go to the local English service. Some more sherry or bubbly at my place later and possibly some mild clubbing with my man after the parents have gone to bed.
This outfit however is the one I’ll wear for Boxing Day, the second day of Christmas. I fell badly in love with this tartan beauty (which is sold out now at Boden). It is ever so classy (I was lucky to get in on a 40% sale). For a festive look I teamed it with vintage mink and a sparkling brooch. The fascinator is a thin golden headband on which I clipped two shoe clips (looked even for me a bit over the top on my heels). No handbag featured. But Christmas with the family is more about bringing a basket along for the presies for the kids. dress: Boden’s Isla Dress

Dieses Jahr ist Weihnachten etwas ganz besonderes. Ich werde Weihnachten zuhause sein. Das klingt jetzt nicht ganz so neu. Schliesslich bin ich Weihnachten immer irgendwie auch zuhause. Allerdings kommen meine Eltern dieses Jahr zu mir in meine Jungesellinnen Wohnung. Wir werden Heiligabend eine fröhliche Runde sein: die Ffreunde, mit denen ich schon seit Jahren Heiligabend feiere, die Eltern meiner Freundin, die aus den Staaten zu ihrer einzigen Tochter gezogen sind, mein Nachbar (und Ex-Freund) und eine weitere gute Freundin und ihr Verlobter, meine Eltern und ich. Mein Privatleben wird nicht dabei sein – Weihnachten ist nicht seins. Es gibt Kaffee und Kuchen (und auch etwas herzhaftes), dann geht es in den englischen Gottesdienst hier in der Stadt. Danach kehren wir wahrscheinlich zurück zu mir – für Sherry und Schampus (oder Sekt). Mal sehen, vielleicht gehe ich dann noch mit meinem Freund (auch als „das Privatleben“ bezeichnet) tanzen, wenn die Eltern im Bett sind.
Dieses Outfit ist das, was ich am zweiten Weihnachtstag zur Familienfeier tragen werde. Ich hatte mich vor einiger Zeit übel in das Karokleid von Boden verguckt. Zum Glück habe ich es im Sale (40% ermässigt!) bekommen. Für einen festlicheren Look trage ich einen Vintage-Nerzschal. Der Fascinator ist ein dünner goldener Haarreif an den ich zwei Schuhclips gemacht habe. Selbst für mich waren die an den Schuhen etwas des Guten zuviel! Keine Handtasche – aber Weihnachten hat man meist eh einen Korb dabei für die Geschenke für die Kinder.
On Saturday while shopping for some rather mundane neccessities I ended up buying one of these Christmas pamper gifts for me: a shower gel and a body lotion smelling of oranges, cloves and cinnamon by Dresdener Essenz. Plus one of their bath salts. This is a warm, lovely fragrance – something that works for winter and not just for Christmas. Feels a bit like a warm embrace – am quite smitten!
Am Samstag, während ich einige sehr profane Dinge einkaufen musste, ist mir dieses Geschenk-Set in die Hände gefallen und habe es spontan für mich selber gekauft. Es besteht aus einer Winterdusche und einer Bodylotion, die wohlig warm nach Orangen, Nelken und Zimt duften. Dazu habe ich mir noch das passende Winterbad der Dresdener Essenz gekauft. Ein toller Duft, nicht nur für Weihnachten! Ich bin ganz hin- und weg von dem Set.

The air is crisp outside and the Christmas markets are back in town. Mulled wine or Glühwein is a drink I enjoy quite often not very much. Too sweet, awful wine as a base and hardly any spices, luke warm in an ungly mug is the harsh reality of many stalls out there. It makes you appreciate „your“ usual one even more. One of my favorite markets was the one in Manchester with the neogothic town hall as a back drop. How quaint!
Sometimes however you want to make your own mulled wine.
This is my recipe:
a bottle of drinkable (dry) red wine
2 cinnamon sticks
3 star anise
3 cloves
1 orange, sliced
2 pods of cardamon
a touch of nutmeg
a couple of pink peppercorns
2-3 tablespoons of muscova (or cane) sugar
A copper kettle would be very appropriate, but actually any kettle will do, even if it won’t impress your guests. Make sure it just simmers and doesn’t get to boil (or else the alcohol will evaporate). To serve put in heatproof glasses (or your assorted collection of Christmas market mugs). Some gingerbread and/ or plums in bacon go rather nicely along. Prost!
Manchester Christmas Market
Draussen wird es wieder klirrend kalt und der Weihnachtsmarkt ist wieder in der Stadt. Glühwein ist eines der Getränke das ich sehr, sehr oft nicht mag. Meist zu süss, mit einem schlechten Wein als Basis, kaum Gewürze und lauwarm in einer hässlichen Tasse ist leider viel zu oft die Realität an so manchem Stand. Man schätzt dann „seinen“ Stand um so mehr, wenn man ihn denn gefunden hat. Einer meiner Lieblingsmärkte war der German Market in Manchester. Das neugotische Rathaus im Hintergrund war einfach eine grandiose Kulisse!
Manchmal mache ich aber auch meinen eigenen Glühwein. Und das ist mein Rezept:
eine Flasche trinkbaren (trockenen) Rotwein
2 Zimtstangen
3 Sternanis
3 Nelken
eine Orange in Scheiben
2 Kardamon-Kapseln
eine Prise Muskat
ein paar Rosa Pfefferkörner
2-3 Esslöffel Muscova oder braunen Rohrzucker
Ein Kupferkessel wäre natürlich sehr adäquat, aber eigentlich tut es irgendein Tops, auch wenn der dann nicht unbedingt die Gäste beeindruckt. Den Glühwein nur erhitzen, nicht aufkochen lassen (sonst verdunstet der Alkohol). Dann in hitzebeständigen Gläsern kredenzen (oder halt der bunten Mischung der Tassen der letzen Weihnachtsmärkte). Etwas Lebkuchen und/ oder Pflaumen im Speckmantel passen da recht gut zu. Cheers!
