The Trouble with Tights – die Strumpfhosensippschaft

That old thing with warmth and feet. Recently one of my cousins asked for my opinion what to do when Summer turns to autumn, when bare feet and bare legs won’t do any more. They were both very reluctant about the knee-high nylon sock. Quite often a few inches shorter than the hem of the skirt. It is quite alright when worn underneath trousers. But even then it’s not everyone’s cup of tea. And don’t try to sell me that no sock thingy – they either roll up inside or peek out. Anyway – the socks’ Big Brother of course is the stocking, that can be sexy but doesn’t have to be.

Or its mum, the 20den tights. Not its granny, that is 40den and claims to be nude, though I am not sure on which creature. The mum and I are kind of forced friends. Or may be colleagues. These you usually can’t pick either. With a little luck however you like them.

Your classic tights have either the legs too long are too short. If not it is probably the waist that gives you issues being too wide or too tight. No matter if sheer or opaque. Last winter I discovered the joys of opaque thermal tights. The colour range is at least in my size rather limited. But they surely are cosy things. The regular opaque version is something I have in all colours and if H&M allows even in patterns.

I quite like the 20den kind in light tones. Matching my skin. If possible with dots. For those slimmer than me there are charming varieties with hearts, bows, skulls, etc. However chances for that are slight in my size range. Good, low cost places for that are H&M, Primark, Calzedonia. The weeping widow, 20den black, is not something I cherish (or own). However the Merry Widow, you might have guessed involves dots and is an entirely different animal. The vintage vixen with a back seam however is not for me. The duchess, call her the God mother, is grey and simple. That is darkish, but not so hard for a light skin tone.

When Marks and Spencer had these in the sale I bought about ten pairs! Unfortunately the stash has declined to two pairs left unpacked.

A special place in my heart has the wild aunt, the rest of the family snub s: the fishnet. In a tight weave. Classy in a pale tone, at least if you are fair. In red not that recommendable. With various patterns including lace versions. Like mine in burgundy.

But what about warm feet? Admittedly the fishnet doesn’t keep your toes toasty. For that and to wear heels and ballet flats right into and out of winters with freezing temperatures I use inlays. Wooly ones. A little nip and tuck and they will fit in most heels. The latest trend ankle socks in heels? I’ll give that one a miss. Hope you’ll join me on that one!

And that is the entire outfit:
dress: Lindy Bop, Holly in Tartan (with sleeves!!!!)
tights: Primark (a while ago)
Shoes: M&S (even longer)
Scarf + brooch: vintage
jacket: Elvi

In engmaschig.
