Happy Halloween – the Cutest Witch in the Office

Trick or Treat! I really, really, really love this (imported) holiday. (Who would have thought). Anyway – time to dig out my purple velvet dress again. These looks are fun for the weekend or the office. The stretch velvet is even good on the bike.

Remember last Halloween? The orange skull tights went so well with another black dress.

Holy Pumpkin – it’s a bag!

Today is the last day of carnival season. It is a bit like halloween but 6 days prior to ash wedesday. Staying at home and not celebrating due to the pandemic was heartbreaking for many of us who celebrate it. For me it blongs to my life, like Christmas – but in fun. So this year it was all at home, no parades or parties. Still no reason not to dress up – especially when the costume fits so well!

Madame la Marquise – as bought with the top and the skirt. Worn with yellow tights and red heels and tricorne. The cut is very similar to my black and silver pirate look from 2018.

Variation as Principal Boy or Breeches Role – much better for outdoors waiting for the parades. The boots are ace in mud and snow. It is already my second pair. I walk most evenings for 3-4 miles and they are ace for that.

Donuts galore – ok, so they are not quite donuts or doughnuts – we don’t make ours with a hole in them. And there is a controversy about the name as they have different names in different regions or even cities in Germany.

Snap Snap the tie is off! A tradition to show that the world oder is upside down and the ladies have taken over for a day. A monstrous regiment of women and the first day of carinval in the streets.

Ob Karneval, Fasnacht oder Fasching: Plussize Piratin

I got myself a new pirate costume – the old one currently has some fitting issues. So I decided I need another one. Going to my favourite carnival shop is always a pleasure but I didn’t have the time and I used their huge online shop. Dress and a new mini hat where there within 3 days.
Also musste ein neues her.

My favourite among the pirate costumes was one from the sexy range. You know the kind: short (mid thigh when standing) and with a nice cleaveage. Quite often that stuff is very low cut. But this doesn’t put my boobs on the table.

The length was still an issue. Too short for my liking. So I put two of my shorter petticoats underneath – the white one from Collectif I bought in London and a black one from LindyBop. The stripey tights have been used before  as a cat, French maid and with the other pirate costume.

Some of the pictures where taken in Cologne. I went to my first Sitzung (want to know what that is?) – it was from the Frauen Union Köln. Great fun and a wonderful programme with some of Cologne’s finest performers. Had to pose with a few tourists on the way there too.

So far I only have been backstage or watched parts from the rear when accompanied my then time boyfriend in my 20s when he played with a brass or marching band. Usually they played a few numbers and then we went to the next place.

The next day I still had this song on my mind.

And here you can see me spin.

Alaaf and Helau – the two major traditional celebratory cries for carnival in Germany. For some carnival is worse than the plague. For others more fun than Christmas. I was raised in one of the hotspots of the carnival culture. You can take the girl out of the region, but not qiute the region out of the gal. I cherish this tradition. So much fun. And even in costumes. It’s the best! Haha. Sorry.

„Do you have a costume?“ asked me the architect from Berlin. She and I work together on a project. „One???“ Not quite – it has grown into a small collction. Last year I was Red Riding Hood. 2015 and before (and also this Thursday) a dashing pirate. Miss Piggy and the French Maid are un-documented. For now.

I bought the Geisha costume in 2015. Not for fancy dress occasions but because I wanted a kimono with dramatic sleeves in my size. Amazon suggested it along with the regular loungewear ones.

I love Asia inspired patterns – be it the versatile Anna Scholz kimono dress or LindyBop’s Suzie-Wong wiggle dress. The debate wether this is an appropriate costume or not, is one I will only discuss in person. It will involve a discussion about feminism or rather sexism. Would I wear this if I’d show a group of Japanese around? Probably not – they’d be more excited to see me as Red Riding Hood wearing a Dirndl.

Most „Japanese“ fancy dress up costumes include a decorated whig. But I only do whigs outside. I find the ones I tried before to warm, itchy and thus a nuissance. Carnival isn’t for me about having the greatest custume but about having fun.

So I made an image search and made my own floral crown. A quick job – done in a llittle less than 10 minutes. Not really a facinator, more like a wreath. It os made of some deco cherry blossom twigs (from my basement – bought but never used), a fake orchid from my kitchen and a corsage. Hard to believe – this headgear is quite party resilient and rather danceproof!

Nahaufnahme fürs Make-Up. Pin-Up inspiriert.
Close-up with the pin-up inspired make up. Peaches Belvedere made a great youTube tutorial in German. But I wanted something more partyproof and sweat resistant. It was actually still there at the end of the night. Only the lipsstick needed touching up.

Weggeozen – aber angekommen. Nur nicht zu Karneval.
Moved away – but found a new home – apart from carnival.

Alaaf, Helau & Man Tau!

Pirates are fun!
